The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization that provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our Veterans, people with disabilities and families with children who meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to Repair Homes, Revitalize Communities and Rebuild Lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence. Their services may include plumbing and electrical repairs, weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, restoring heat and hot water, back and front yard clean-up, constructing wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars and so much more. Preschoolers Pedal For A Cause The Early Childhood Education Programs at two Eastern Suffolk BOCES schools joined together to hold their annual TrikeA-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The preschoolers in the programs did laps on the track around the playground on tricycles,

two-wheelers with training wheels, and scooters while students in the Early Childhood Education Programs made sure everyone was safe. Parents visited to cheer on their youngsters. This year, students and staff raised almost $2,900, exceeding their goal of $2,500.

The high school students in the programs are studying to be early childhood educators and attend programs at either the Edward J. Milliken Technical Center or the Islip Career Center. Both schools reside on the same campus in Oakdale.

DENMARK VISIT -Bay Shore High School International Baccalaureate (IB) students traveled to Denmark for an international exchange visit with a Danish high school during spring recess. The students’ goal was to raise their global awareness with a ten-day immersion in Danish culture. The trip began with an exploration of Copenhagen. Excursions to Amalienborg Castle to see the changing of the guard and to Helsingor to visit Kronborg Castle, fabled inspiration for the castle in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, were followed by evenings spent under the colorful lights of the city. After the whirlwind tour of Danish culture, the students traveled to Odense to meet their host families for the second half of the trip, during which they attended a Danish high school, Sct. Knud’s Gymnasium, and collaborated on international projects.

Law Day Bay Shore High School’s rich tradition of field trips provided some of the subject matter for its annual Law Day mock trial competition held on April 1, 2019. Students tried fictional negligence cases based on injuries that were sustained by students on field trips to the Museum of Modern Art with AP Art History class and to the Riverhead Jail with Criminal Justice Twenty teams BAY SHORE EAGLE SCOUTS - Congratulations to Dylan and Zach Dorsch! The class. of three students each two Bay Shore High School students recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. performed their roles as lawyers and witness before attorneys from Bay Shore, Brightwaters and neighboring communities. The attorneys served as judges for the competition

and mentors as they gave the students advice on proper trial techniques, the rules of evidence and how to better frame their arguments to become more forceful advocates. Kya Primm, Christine De la Cruz and Kareem Hyman earned first place honors. In a very close second place were Isabella Guarino and Keira Quinlan. The third place team consisted of CiaraAnn Layne, Kyanie Louis and Tatiana Padro. In fourth place was the team of Tania Cortes, Jacob Hood and Gio Rosario. Judges for the competition included local attorneys, Jack Finnerty, Esq., Timothy Finnerty,

Esq., Ellen Kluepfel, Esq., John Lawlor, Esq., Salvatore Puccio, Esq., Nick Santomartino, Esq., Robert Torres, Esq. and law student Rachel Robinson. Law Day is organized by the high school social studies department as part of its law program by teacher and former practicing attorney Jeanne-Marie Marziliano with the assistance of Joseph Lemke, Director of Social Studies for the Bay Shore school district and John Selzer, Bay Shore High School mock trial coach.
