The heaviest shark was a 377-pound Thresher landed by Ed Groppe aboard Captain David Walters’ “The Reel Deal.” Of the sharks that were weighed in, more than 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need. The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for either one day or both days of the tournament. is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find. The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping. Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I
you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate
by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership. This year’s event was chaired by Allan H. Cohen, Esq., Managing Partner, Long Island, Nixon Peabody LLP. The 52nd Annual Heart Ball honored Scott L. Schubach, MD, FACC, Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, WinthropUniversity Hospital. Dr. Schubach received the 2015 Cardiovascular Science Award. Joseph R. Ficalora, President & Chief Executive Officer, New York Community Bancorp, Inc. received the 2015 Corporate Leadership Award. Board Of Ed Recognition On May 27th, the Bay Shore Board of Education recognized the Fifth Avenue and Bay Shore Middle School PFA’s on recent donations made to their respective buildings. Students of the Fifth Avenue School are excited to be receiving new playground courtesy of their PFA who generously donated $25,000. The Middle School PFA
donated $1,104 to be used for the purchase of 16 Apple TV carts. The Bay Shore School District is fortunate and grateful for the support and commitment of our parents toward meeting the needs of our students. The Bay Shore Board of Education also recognized Dr. LaQuita Outlaw, Principal of Bay Shore Middle School, for being honored by the NYS

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Director of Choirs Mr. Jared Berry stated, “It was a wonderful experience for the students. They worked so diligently and were then able to unwind and have fun together.” To finish their week each ensemble performed to a packed Dunne Auditorium with an eager audience for the Spring Instrumental and Vocal Concerts. Donohue concluded, “It’s really been a banner year. To have so many All-State and All-County award recipients, carry the day at this competition, and play to a full auditorium is a true testament to the quality and growth of our program.”

The St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School Performing Arts Department brought more than 160 members to compete against more than 25 other ensembles in the Music in the Parks Festival at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. Each ensemble worked throughout the year to prepare a number of pieces that they performed in front of seasoned judges on May 15th. As the judges read their evaluations it became clear that this would be a banner day for SJB. The day included five first place finishes and four ratings of superior, the highest rating. On Saturday, May 2nd, over 400 participants representing 32 school districts attended Bay Shore Middle School’s Students of Long Island Makers Expo (SLIME). SLIME showcased the various artistic and innovative talents of Long Island students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Emma Ingold, tween author of The Book of Haunts, was on hand to autograph copies of her book. Middle School teachers Mr. Kaplan and Mr. Orofino shared projects made by students in the Toy Making Club and demonstrated the 3D printer. The Bay Shore High
School Robotics Team brought two robots that students designed and created. Participants also had the opportunity to participate in “make and take” and “make and donate” projects at the Expo. They created brushbot robots, picture frames, cards for soldiers, pillows for animal shelters and blankets for babies. The Expo also featured a “Trash to Fashion” show, which challenged students to create wearable items from recycled materials. First place went to Myiah Petroro of Island Trees; in second place was Bay Shore’s own Mallory Morton. The event was coordinated by Kristina
Holzweiss (librarian) and Maryann Almes (reading teacher), with assistance from Lisa Morales (parent). Committee members included Gina Seymour (Islip HS) and Deb Olsen (South Country Elementary School). When asked to reflect on the event, Mrs. Holzweiss said, “I was really happy with how SLIME went. It took a lot of hard work, but I think people enjoyed the day.” The main funding for SLIME came from a grant received from Farmers Insurance through Adopta-Classroom, as well as the Bay Shore Lions Club and Bay Shore Rotary.
