The sights, sounds, aromas and flavors of Greece are coming again to Hamptonites and visitors to the East End. The Hamptons Greek Festival will take place again this year, July 10th-13th, on the grounds of the newly built Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons. Continuing a 29 year tradition, the Festival will highlight authentic Greek dishes and pastries, Hellenic youth dance performances, and live Greek Music nightly. Thousands have indulged in the rich flavors and hearty portions of the Festival’s menu. Passing down the culinary traditions of their parents and grandparents, the organizers of the 2014 Hamptons Greek Festival offer Greek style chicken, pastitsio, spanakopita, souvlaki, gyro and much more. Fixing The System By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

Shootout For Soldiers The Shootout for Soldiers, a 24-hour lacrosse game benefiting wounded American military members that has raised more than $250,000 since its inception, will expand to a second location in Long Island on July 24th and 25th. The event, which was originally started by a group of high school students, will hold its third annual fundraising game in the Baltimore area this June. The effort has expanded dramatically each year, with more than 2,000 participants and 10,500 attendees taking part in the 2013 charitable event. The expansion to Long Island, according to organizers, represents the first expansion leg in a program anticipated to spread throughout the country. People interested in participating in the 2014 event can register as a team or as an individual by visiting www.

ShootoutForSoldiers. com. The games are open to both male and female participants with no age restrictions and will be held at the Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa, New York. The cost to participate per individual is $20.00. “We have received incredible interest from more than sixty different cities across the country asking us to expand the event into their region,” explained Tyler Steinhardt, Founder and Director of Shootout for Soldiers. “Based on the combination of an incredibly active and organized lacrosse community, as well as an impassioned group of supporters of our nation’s veterans, expanding to Long Island was the natural fit. We’re extremely fortunate to work with such an incredible team in the area and are excited to continue to support our nation’s heroes through the sport of lacrosse.”

Steinhardt is taking a leave of absence from his studies at American University to concentrate his full-time efforts into expanding and developing the Shootout for Soldiers. Among the initial benefits of this was adding the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund, Semper Fi Fund and Gary Sinise Foundation into the partnership mix. The common mission of all four organizations is to provide financial, physical and emotional support or services to individuals that have dedicated their lives to the United States military. “We are extremely proud that, with an allvolunteer team, Shootout for Soldiers has spent less than one percent of the total fundraising dollars on expenses to organize and produce the games,” Steinhardt explained. Both the Baltimore event, to be held at the McDonogh School in

Owings Mills, Maryland and the Long Island event, scheduled for the Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa, New York, start at 9 am and end 24 hours later. Fire Island Dance Festival This year’s performers, choreographers and host will be announced this spring. Past festivals have welcomed dancers from the country’s top modern and ballet companies, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Paul Taylor Dance Company, New York City Ballet, Pilobolus and MOMIX, and featured iconic choreography by Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Lar Lubovitch and Tony Award winners Rob Ashford and Jerry Mitchell.
