Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reflecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices flowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception…

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle
used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-
cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move. In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eye-opening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 percent of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24. Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise. Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.

Exercise physiologists at John Hopkins Weight Management Center say to start with an activity that you already enjoy, even if it’s aligned with the trend of the moment. Chances are you can find a class or make up a routine that works for you.
2. Tweak your playlist.
Music can improve performance during a workout and may actually take your mind off of strenuous or repetitive activity. Tunes also can be coordinated to the workout. Songs that feature lyrics such as run, punch, push or groove, can reinforce movements in the routine, offers the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Also, tailor songs to coordinate to the beats per minute of different activities. Strength activities and endurance activities can feature songs with higher BPMs.

Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older: Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist who specializes in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, notes that human beings are better at recognition than recall. That means people are more likely to remember something they read, such as a note or a list, than something they’re simply told. Recognize the value of repetition. The Harvard Medical School notes that people might be more inclined to remember what they hear if they repeat it out loud. Names and addresses might be more easily remembered after they’re repeated out loud because repetition increases the

Breaking things down into small chunks also can help improve memory. If tasked with remembering something extensive, such as a speech, focus on a single sentence at a time, only moving on to the next sentence when you’re confident you have successfully committed the preceding sentence to memory. Periodic memory lapses are often nothing to worry about. But men and women concerned about maintaining their memories can employ various strategies to do just that.

SENIORS & STUDENTS UNITE - Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently visited the Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center and Cape Cod Learning Center, as seniors and students alike united to plant flowers for Mother’s Day. Grouped under sunshine and shade in the picnic area between the two centers, the intergenerational pairing potted plants and succulents which the students later gave to their mothers. The cross-generational event brought together the wisdom and guidance of the seniors with the joviality of the students, for an afternoon of laughs and goodwill.
Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!
Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment. By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise. If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you? Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive? Situation: Someone is driving and trying to cut into your lane with good reason. Some people (whatever their motive) will pull up closer to the car in front of them and not allow this. To add insult to injury, they will never make eye

The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you. Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too! Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver. Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed. Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you
could accomplish during the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate. Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you! May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going. The results you obtain will be well worth the effort. Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

the Adelphi program supports our goal to provide financial assistance to women who would otherwise not be able to afford early detection and treatment services for breast cancer,” says Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the cofounder of KROH. Kat, who was diagnosed when she was 32, says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed in many ways with the support of her family and excellent medical care. She realized that there were many women who did not have such support and was determined to do what she could to help. She and her husband George Raptis and sister Despina Yarian established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013. “The staff of Adelphi is
a big part of what we do,” says Despina. “Through their work they define what Kats Ribbon of Hope is all about.” Last year, KROH gave the Adelphi program a grant which allowed them to hire an additional patient navigator. “The generosity of Kat’s Ribbon of Hope is greatly increasing our ability to help underserved women,” says Hillary Rutter, the executive director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support, education and advocacy for breast cancer patients and the community. Summer Portfolio Program No students left behind in 2018! No more wait lists! The Art League of Long Island’s popular Summer Portfolio Development Program for Teens is expanding to accommodate more high school students looking to build their college portfolios. Along with the additional seats, the Art League is bringing in an additional instructor and a host of new opportunities including a schedule of special lectures, lessons, and demonstrations by professionals in the fields of art and design. These practicing professionals will share studio techniques and their strategies for success! Program participants will enhance their art portfolios by incorporating the variety of artistic mediums and techniques designed to catch the attention of college admissions officers. New Summer Portfolio instructor Korey Zalk will co-teach along with current instructor Lucas Sheridan in the program’s 23rd year at the Art League. Korey currently teaches art in the Glen Cove City School District, prior to that she taught at the Success Academy in Springfield Gardens and in the North Babylon School District. Korey is not
completely new to the Art League. She taught Early Childhood sessions of the Art League’s Summer Art Adventure Program (SAA) and was a teaching assistant at SAA while earning her Bachelor’s Degree. As a high school student Korey attended the Art League’s Summer Portfolio Program where she went on to earn scholarships to attend the New York Institute of Technology and Dowling College, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences, with a dual major in Secondary Education and Visual Arts. Lucas Sheridan has been with the Art League’s Summer Portfolio Program since 2016. When not teaching the summer program, Lucas teaches at the Baccalaureate School of Global Education as an IB Studio Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer, a position he has held since 2011. Prior to the Baccalaureate School he was an Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer at the NYC Lab School. Sheridan earned his BFA in Drawing and Painting at Syracuse University and his MA in Art Education at Brooklyn College. His recent students have applied to and been accepted to a wide range
of schools including: Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, The School of Visual Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, Parsons School of Design, and Yale. The Summer Portfolio Development Program runs in two three-week sessions from 9:30am to 2:30pm at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills. Session One takes place July 9th-July 27th, Session Two takes place July 30th-August 17th. A public exhibition in the Art League’s main gallery featuring artwork created by program participants will be on view August 11th through August 19th. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope presented a grant of $100,000 to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program for their bilingual patient navigation program for underserved breast cancer patients. The grant will be used to support patients at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) and local hospitals through their diagnosis and treatment. The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s social workers address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. A team of Investors Bank employees recently volunteered their time to turnover garden beds, weed and plant at the Options for Community Living Greenhouse and gardens located in Medford, New York. Options – a Long Island not-for-profit serving people with chronic physical and mental illnesses – operates a Greenhouse where residents grow flowers and
vegetables as well as plants that are sold at seasonal fundraising events and at the Options Thrift Store, located at 392 Hawkins Avenue, Ronkonkoma, New York. The Investors Bank employees helped weed and prepare the soil for planting, installed screening to help protect the garden from the deer and rabbit populations and planted vegetables and
flowers. “The volunteers were so wonderful. I am thankful for their help getting us ready for the planting season,” said Options’ Horticulturist Jason Mullen. “Their impact will go far beyond the work they have done because we will be able to use the revitalized garden beds for many seasons to come.” “It has been a pleasure to volunteer at the
