What Would You Do... By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining
mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.
But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life. Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no? Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

Recognition Luncheon Federation of Organizations hosted a Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Friday, May 3rd at the Huntington Hilton. The event served to honor senior volunteers from the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs and was well attended by over 300 guests. The day was celebrated with a gala luncheon and dancing. The Foster Grandparent Program connects local
senior citizen volunteers with special needs children in schools, Head Start centers, preschools and other community locations. Currently, over 170 Foster Grandparents serve as mentors and tutors to over 2100 children daily throughout Suffolk County. Joseph Greco, a Kindergarten teacher at Woods Road Elementary School in North Babylon was there to share his experience with the Foster
Grandparent Program. He spoke about the accomplishments his Foster Grandparent has made in the classroom. “The Foster Grandparent Program, from my perspective, is incredibly important, relevant and needed, especially in consideration of the times in which we live” he said. Federation also sponsors the Senior Companion Program. This program allows active seniors the
opportunity to help frail seniors who are homebound. Maria Leonelli and Loretta Weiners, who receive the services of the Senior Companion Program, spoke to the audience about how having a Senior Companion in their life has allowed them to remain living independently and how thankful they are that this program is available. Because of the tremendous success of these programs in
communities all across Long Island, numerous corporate sponsors, including CA, Inc., Lincoln Computer Services, Astoria Federal Savings Bank, The Knapp Swezey Foundation, Corporate Synergies Group, Holtz Rubenstein Reminick LLP, Medford Chemists, Mutual of America, TLC Transportation, The Townwide Fund of Huntington, Total Management Corp. and Valley National Bank

students from the other school building and were assigned a “buddy” with whom they will attend advisory the following year. Meanwhile, parents attended workshops on a host of topics, including “How to be Successful in Middle School and Beyond”, “Developing an Independent/Responsible Middle Schooler” and “Keys for Effective Communication with Your
Fifth Grade students at Bay Shore South Country School, under the guidance of teachers Ms. Diliberto and Ms. Tanner, have been studying what author Georgia Heard calls the “amazing language” in her book Awakening the Heart. Heard characterizes “amazing language” as beautiful and poetic language used to paint pictures in others’ minds. Students scoured
books for examples of such language, looking to authors like Jane Yolen, Cynthia Rylant, and Mary O’Neill. They then created and decorated colorful bookmarks with their favorite examples and sent the bookmarks to all staff members. Principal Grasso, Assistant Principal Dworkin, and special area teachers were then asked to create their own amazing
language bookmarks for students. This fun and educational activity heightened awareness of the power of the written word while helping 5th graders improve their own writing skills. Bookmarks created by staff members will prove a special keepsake for students who will always remember the beauty of our collective “amazing language.”
South Country Elementary School students from Room 25 have gone green! After watching a few videos about a fabulous product called Idea Paint, these 5th graders decided to find a way to reduce paper consumption in their classroom. Idea Paint is a white board paint that can be applied to any nonporous surface. Students in Room 25 decided that their desk tops would make for wonderful whiteboard workspaces that are easy to clean and highly motivational as tools within the classroom. The process of acquiring Idea Paint was also a wonderful learning experience for the students. Ideas about how the paint would be used, how the funds could be raised, and how the students could convince others of the value of this

project were driven 100% by these 10 and 11 yearold students. Fundraising for the project was done through the website DonorsChoose.com, a great idea pitched by Room 25’s Lexi Grassia. The class received donations from all over the country and the project was funded within three days of being posted. The 2012-2013 Room 25 class has made a lasting impact on South Country School. The desks will be utilized for years to come and the possibilities are endless. One goal is to be able to do work on the desks, snap a photo with a personal device, and upload the photos to an online filing system. Just think of how much paper could be saved in this fashion - truly inspirational!

Celebrating Stars Of Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) is pleased to announce that its 26th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating the Stars of Recovery, held on Thursday, May 2nd, at the Garden City Hotel, raised over $290,000 to support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention and intervention programs for children and families. More than 250 community members, elected officials, treatment providers and their family members turned out to support LICADD and ensure that the agency’s life-saving addiction resources and recovery programs remain available to individuals and families across Long Island. Guests arrived by red carpet entrance to the Hotel, and enjoyed a silent auction, dinner and dancing
throughout the program. LICADD unveiled a video that highlighted its newest programs, as well as the personal stories of clients who found recovery in the agency’s programs and services. The Suffolk County Water Authority has been voted to have the best tasting water on Long Island by those who casted their ballots in the Long Island Water Conference’s 28th Annual Best-Tasting Water Contest. “I would like to congratulate the Suffolk County Water Authority on this much-deserved accomplishment of having Long Island’s besttasting water,” said Long Island Water Conference Chairman Mike Boufis. “This contest is an excellent way to celebrate drinking water week and

The conference served as a culmination to the weeklong celebration of National Drinking Water Week and part of the ongoing effort to encourage residents to choose tap water because

Long Island native, artist Elaine Faith Thompson was chosen to paint and design the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship commemorative poster. The U.S. Women’s Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, will be held June 27th30th, at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton. The archival, faderesistant lithograph poster is now available, on www. usgashop.com in the category of “Art & Gifts”
and at the Sebonack Golf Shop. Thompson would be delighted to write a personal message on your poster after it is purchased. She will be signing posters in the USGA merchandise pavilion during the championship. The original painting is also available for purchase. Thompson is honored to have been commissioned to paint Sebonack for the Women’s Open. Inspired by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular
views of the Peconic Bay, she worked all winter to complete the painting. It was by far, one of the most detailed and challenging paintings of her career. She is currently handling shipping, packaging and framing for the poster. Thompson has also painted the commemorative painting of “THE BLACK COURSE – Bethpage, Over the Years, N.Y.” in 2002 which was hanging in Governor Pataki’s office in Albany

He was joined by the Mayor of Ocean Beach, James Mallot, Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, and members of “Revive FI”, the Fire Island grassroots business association, to provide updates on the state of Fire Island’s economic recovery for Summer 2013. Just over six months ago, Hurricane Sandy devastated the remote 32-mile-long barrier island leaving residents and businesses with the challenge of trying to restore normalcy before the summer months. The restoration effort was forced to begin immediately, as local businesses rely entirely upon tourism spending for its survival during a slim 12-week
