Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy
working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult
responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

(LICADD) is pleased to announce that its 27th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating Hope Springs Eternal, held on Monday, May 12th, at the Garden City Hotel, raised over $250,000 to support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention and intervention programs for children and families. Twenty-eight minutes and thirty seven seconds after the starting horn sounded, 12 year-old Luke Anderson crossed the finish line on a beautiful Saturday morning elated with his accomplishment. A leukemia survivor, Luke joined his family and other participants at the Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon’s 5K Race. This 8th annual event began in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Luke’s mother, Evelyn Anderson, a former South Setauket,

resident, who wanted to celebrate her son’s life by running a race in his honor. In 2013, Luke ran with his older brother, Patrick, and their mom, and this year the sports-enthusiastic family, including younger sisters, Ciara and Shannon and dad Todd, drove from their New Milford CT. home the night before to rest up in a local hotel and get to the start line with 609 other participants – onequarter of them supporters of Friends of Karen. “It was amazing to see the support of all these people, running, walking and
raising funds for Friends of Karen,” said Evelyn. “And heartwarming for our family that we have an opportunity to give back to this organization in this fun way.” Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a lifethreatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 12,900 children in the New York tri-state region.

More than 400 attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City on Friday, May 2nd, to attend the American Heart Association’s 51st Annual Long Island Heart Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership. This year’s event was chaired by Christopher Doveala, Vice President, Financial Services, Leviton Mfg. Co. The 51st Annual Heart Ball honored George A. Petrossian, MD, FACC, Director, Interventional Cardiovascular

Dancing With The Stars
The 6,000 pinwheels displayed on a Stony Brook University field represents the annual lives lost to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The field of pinwheels is also symbolic of a growing theme of the annual Ride for Life and for Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient, advocate and founder of the Ride for Life Organization. Pendergast, the ALS specialists at Stony Brook Medicine, and supporters of the Ride for Life envision that like the pinwheels, a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease is out there with an answer ‘blowing in the wind.’ “Hope is alive, and there is no doubt in my mind we will eventually find a cure. That’s why we press forward,” said Pendergast, at the Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony took place on the Stony Brook University campus on May 10th. The ceremony is the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients that ends in Manhattan on May 17th. The Ride for Life, which raises awareness and funds for ALS research, began in 1998. During the ceremony, the Ride for Life donated $160,000 to Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association-certified center on Long Island. “This day is about the Riders, the people who support them, those who provide their medical care, and the researchers who are working tirelessly to find a cure for ALS,” said L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, CEO, Stony Brook University Hospital, and Senior VP for Health Systems at Stony Brook Medicine. “We salute the courage of all the patients and remember those who have been lost due to ALS.” “All of the pinwheels we see do represent the many

Field Of Dreams lives taken because of ALS, but we see something more,” said Al Jordan, a Ride for Life committee member and Associate Dean of Student & Minority Affairs at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “I am going to borrow a phrase. It is a ‘field of dreams’ with hope that we will soon celebrate a cure.” Since its inception the Ride for Life has raised close to $5 million to fund ALS research and clinical services. Through the ALS Center of Excellence, Stony Brook clinicians and neuroscience researchers are conducting research to develop better targeted treatments and launch clinical trials of new investigative therapies
against ALS. “The Ride for Life is an amazing experience, and I hope to go the distance,” said Frank Wojcik, 52, of Commack, a patient at Stony Brook and first time Rider. Diagnosed in January 2013, Wojcik said Pendergast inspired him to join the Ride for Life. He has learned more about the disease during his patient journey and thinks that as science continues to gain more knowledge about ALS, a cure may emerge at some point. “Right now what has been most inspiring is the

This year a record number public schools are participating in the Ride for Life. According to Pendergast, more than 50 schools from East Hampton to Manhattan are taking part, some with donations directly from student efforts. An estimated 8,000 Long Island students this month are learning first-hand about the ALS Ride for Life cause. Two ALS patients at the event were strong enough to walk the day’s trek onto the Stony Brook University campus. Clinton Strait, of East Northport, who continues to work as a project manager, said he felt inspired and would hopefully walk on other days during the Ride. Paul Weisman, of Bohemia, walked the Ride course for two days prior to the Stony Brook event. On hand to support the Ride for Life and Stony Brook event were New York State Senator John J. Flanagan, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn. The event concluded with the Remembrance Ceremony – when the names of 90 people lost to ALS – representing the number of minutes between deaths from ALS in the United States – were read aloud. As the gusts of a coming rainstorm picked up, the families and friends of patients stood around the pinwheel “field of dreams.” Family members then read their loved one’s name aloud, a bell was rung, and a balloon released into the air to honor each of them.

Helping Hands in West Islip, Inc., a tax-exempt charity founded by local resident Jennifer Gallozzi in 1990 to serve the needy of Suffolk County, will be collecting new or gentlyused backpacks, totes and decorated bags before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11th, at the West Islip Fire Department, 309 Union Boulevard, West Islip (across from American Legion Hall). The backpacks should contain school supplies and other treats to help children finish this school year and prepare for the next and to get through the summer when school lunches and play supplies are not available, such as non-perishable kids meals (granola bars, cereal boxes, fruit cups, fliptop tuna, crackers, soups, juice boxes), small toys, flip-flops, beach towels, jump ropes, balls and chalk. While Jennifer and her volunteers may not be able to change a child’s life circumstances, they can give them happy moments through gestures of love and caring, one smile at a time. Helping Hands processed one box of donations in 1990; last year it gave out more than 100 backpacks and used vans and buses to serve over 5,000 mostly children Long Islanders. It has always operated on a zero budget and survives solely through the generosity of the public. Bay Shore High School Senior Ryan Mazzie was recently featured on News 12 and the News 12.com website as their Scholar Athlete of the Month. Ryan’s baseball coach, Mr. Herbst, describes him as “determined, motivated, compassionate and intelligent” and went on to say, “He is an involved student-athlete whose hard work, both in the classroom and the athletic arena, has enabled him to become an exemplary leader at Bay Shore High School.” In the classroom, Ryan is an accomplished student. He boasts a
101.55 (weighted) GPA, is ranked fourth in his class of 417 students, is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate and has been named to the Principal’s List and selected for Bay Shore High School’s Breakfast for Champions. Ryan has also been involved in numerous scholastic activities, such as Student Council (Class Treasurer), National Honor Society (Treasurer), Model UN, SADD, Athletes Helping Athletes, Peer Support, Math Club and the school newspaper, The Maroon Echo (Sports Editor).
No stranger to community service, Ryan has taken part in community service projects such as Spruce Up Bay Shore, Fall Clean Up, Light the Night, football clinics, baseball clinics and Bay Shore High School’s Breast Cancer Brunch. Ryan displays an uncommon level of compassion for someone his age. In 9th grade, Ryan donated his bone marrow to help save his younger sister, Melina, who was battling a rare form of aplastic anemia. As an athlete, Ryan is quite a standout. In his
first Varsity football game, Ryan threw six touchdown passes, breaking an 86year old school record. He has continued to excel on the football field as the starting quarterback and team Captain. As a Senior, he was named First Team All-Division and honored as the starting quarterback in the Suffolk County All-Star Game. On the baseball diamond, Ryan is a left-handed pitcher/1st baseman/team Captain who serves as a threat in the heart of the batting order. As a Junior, Ryan led the team in home runs, tied for the
team lead in RBI’s and maintained a .408 batting average, earning him AllLeague honors. For his athletic prowess, Ryan appeared in a “Best Feature” sports story, in Newsday’s Top 100 (football), in Blue Chips Prospects Top 100 (baseball), in an MSG Varsity feature and was recognized as the 201314 NYSAHPERD Suffolk Zone Award male student recipient for Bay Shore High School. Being able to successfully balance all of his scholastic, athletic and service-oriented activities is a testament to Ryan’s
tremendous work ethic, character and uncanny maturity. In describing himself, Ryan stated, “I am driven by that same motivation as a mountain climber. Sure the climb to the top is difficult, but once you get there the view is breathtaking.” Ryan plans on playing baseball at the collegiate level, while pursuing a degree in finance. The Bay Shore School District congratulates Ryan and his family on his impressive achievements and wishes him the best of luck in the future.
