he YMCA Boulton Center for the Performing Arts recently hosted the YMCA Act Out student production of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr. The production featured many songs from the thrilling animated motion picture. The show put on was a fast-paced version of the classic tale that pleased the entire crowd. The cast and crew put in many hours to make this production a possibility.

Guided instruction from experts in a dynamic digital setting keeps kids engaged and entertained while learning lots and allows teachers to then return to the classroom with hands-on activities that bolster that learning. Each year, in line with this program, the Milwaukee Public Museum offers schools the opportunity to share projects created by students who have participated in their Video Conferences. SSCM’s Fifth

Grade teacher, Mrs. Nicole Congro tasked students with thinking through what they’d absorbed during the session and transform the story into a 4-panel story board of their own creation. The students’ designs were wide and varied and showed how much they’d taken away from their faraway instructors in order to showcase their creativity and round out this virtual activity to make it a more authentic hands-on learning experience. Students from all across the

country submit projects for consideration to the museum as part of this program, so the news was extra exciting that for the second year in a row, a number of projects from SSCM students have been selected and are on display in the museum’s Student Art Exhibit nearly 1,000 miles away! Congratulations to all the students who participated and especially to those whose projects made it onto the museum wall!

Through the Distance Learning Program at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, educators have the ability to leverage learning from around the globe, bringing down the walls of the classroom and exposing students to a diverse array of educational opportunities. One such activity was SSCM’s participation in a series of Video Conferences with the Milwaukee Public Museum, during which students learned all about “The Christmas Tree Ship”

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Masera Learning Center has a new pre-vocational room. Curriculum Teacher Natalie Armstrong said, “The pre-vocational kits were purchased through PTO funding, donations from staff, and a mini grant.” There are 68 kits that teach a variety of fine motor skills and matching, sorting, stacking, filing, money identification as well as vocational and job

training skills with varying levels from beginner through advanced. The vocational and job training tasks range from simple package assembly to more challenging tasks of assembling ﬂashlights and electronic circuits. Over twenty kits purchased with PTO funds where ordered from Autism Learn. “The company was founded by a retired ESBOCES aide who had first-hand knowledge of the needs of our population of

students,” said Armstrong. The PTO also funded additional items that were needed to complete the room. They purchased a clock which is analog and digital as well as a mounting strip so the student can display the task directions on the wall at eye level. The Masera Learning Center provides instruction to children with moderate to severe Autism and related developmental disabilities.

There is a Settlement in a class action lawsuit against Cablevision entitled Marchese et al. v. Cablevision, et al., 10-cv-02190 in New Jersey federal court that claims that certain business practices resulted in subscribers paying higher prices for Cablevision’s cable TV set-top boxes. The Settlement provides benefits to current and former Cablevision customers. Cablevision denies all of the claims in the lawsuit and asserts it did nothing wrong.

Who is included? The Settlement Class includes, subject to certain exceptions, all persons in New Jersey, Connecticut and New York who subscribed to Cablevision’s video services and paid a monthly fee to Cablevision to lease a Set-Top Box at any time from April 30, 2004 to March 9, 2016.

What does this Settlement provide? The Settlement provides benefits for Current Subscribers and Former Subscribers:

The Court will hold a hearing in the case on September 12, 2016, to consider whether to approve the Settlement, and to consider a request by Class Counsel for up to $9.5 million for attorneys’ fees and expenses to be paid out of the Settlement. A Buddy for Buddy Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. On Monday, June 20, 2016 the American Heart Association will be hosting its 28th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. The American Heart Association is excited to announce that the Tennis Classic will once again be a part of the day’s events. Paul Woodstock, Executive Vice President, U.S. Sales & Marketing, Biotronik Corp. will be the Tennis honoree. Much progress has been made in the fight against heart disease and stroke. However, many Americans are still not getting the proper amount of exercise that will effectively combat risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/ overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight. There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts to accommodate all participants for the golf event. There will also be themed holes and rafﬂes along the 18-hole course. Teaming Up Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and approximately 20,000 Americans can have the disease at any given time, according to the ALS Association. It is also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease because the

baseball great was stricken with it. To help try to combat this progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, Islip students, teachers, family members and friends are holding the second annual Islip Family

Run for ALS Research, Saturday, May 21st, at 9 a.m. Last year, hundreds ran (or walked) a mile around the Islip school track, raising money to fight this debilitating disease. This worthwhile event brought together competitors running a six-minute mile, students

joining with their sports teams, and spectators cheering from the sidelines. Businesses and organizations showed their support, while teachers, staff and even the principal gallantly volunteered to sit in the dunk tank. All proceeds will be donated to the Packard

Center, a research center at Johns Hopkins University dedicated to finding a cure for ALS and to the Ride for Life Foundation, a local group that raises money for research and patient care. To join the team and fight against ALS, sign up at teampackard.org or call
