Bay Shore Middle School student Grace Paliseno had the opportunity of a lifetime in January. She was selected to attend the Presidential Inauguration

The small working group she was part of looked at ways to help children in other parts of the world access quality education. They presented their research to the larger group. Throughout the summit, various speakers, including Malala Yousafzai, General Colin Powell, Spike Lee and Abby Wambach, delivered inspirational remarks to students. Grace also attended the inauguration of President Donald Trump, which was followed by a private gala at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Hofstra University’s PEIR program is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, says Bradley Kaye, Associate Director of Lifelong Learning. PEIR stands for Personal Enrichment in Retirement. Kaye says PEIR, which meets year-round usually four days a week, provides opportunities for intellectual stimulation, cultural enrichment and personal growth for retirees or semi-retired individuals aged 55 or older. PEIR, he adds, is one of the many lifelong learning programs in universities across the country. The Hofstra program is different from many of them in that the students develop and present the courses. Classes cover subjects such as current events, literacture, history, religion, philosophy, natural sciences, politics, performing arts, visual arts and architecture, economics, finance and technology. “There is an important social element to PEIR,”

while going to high school and college, and then later on while working a full time job, I tended to miss quite a number of regular rehearsals leading up to the big recital at the end of the year. Somehow, it always came together in the end. All these years later, my retention seems to have… slipped a bit, I suppose. Mid-April, and I’ve only missed one class – and yet the dance has taken on a “brand new” vibe each week. There’s something to be said for getting old too. And with that, it has occurred to be that I will be reaching the midpoint of my thirties this summer. How did it get so late so soon? as Dr. Seuss mused. How, indeed.

On February 16th, as Gardiner Manor School saluted black history month, African American professionals from all careers, with many talents, volunteered to share their expertise with students and give students the opportunity to interview

them and ask questions of interest. Teachers, entrepreneurs, editors, a martial arts instructor, a drug abuse educator, an army sergeant and a Tuskegee torch bearer were just a few of the professionals that said yes to our future and gave

their time to share their experiences with us. Each grade level eagerly met with our guests and left knowing they can be whatever they want to be! Thank you to all who made this day possible!

DISCOVERING THE UNIVERSE - All Gardiner Manor Scholars will be treated to “Discovering the Universe: Mobile Classroom from Vanderbilt Museum.” This hightech, 37-foot bus is generously funded by a National Grid Foundation grant. The educational stations in the Classroom are Light, Telescopes, Digital Imaging, The 3-D Universe and Gravity. Scholars investigate how astronomers acquire knowledge about the Universe in an interactive and extremely motivating way! Special thanks to Vanderbilt Museum and National Grid!

FIFTH AVENUE CELEBRATES - On Friday, March 3rd, Fifth Avenue School held an assembly to celebrate Black History Month. Students performed songs and dances for their classmates and families. Teachers put on a play for the students, which took them on a tour of a Black History Museum and highlighted the contributions that have been made throughout history. Historical figures, such as Harriet Tubman, were brought to life in the Fifth Avenue auditorium.

March Madness was in full swing at Bay Shore High School as students took part in a highly competitive chess tournament. Organized by students with the assistance of librarian Ms. Darch and teacher Mr. Marco, the

tournament attracted dozens of students who were ready to match wits on the chessboard. Over the course of three days, students took part in multiple rounds of competition. The final round was held in the Little Theater,

which allowed spectators to see the board projected on a screen. The winning students were Jacob Simon (first place), Adrian Pastolero (second place) and Won Han (third place). Congratulations to all of the students who took part in the tournament!

MONEY MANAGEMENT - Students in Mr. Carney’s Money 101 class at Bay Shore High School are learning how to manage their money. Recently they had a visit from representatives from Peoples United bank to provide information about smart money EVIDENCE OF CHANGE - Students on Team 61 at Bay Shore Middle School management. recently learned how to use evidence to make scientific arguments. They conducted experiments and used the evidence they gathered to debate whether a candle burning causes a chemical or physical change.

MESSAGE OF LOVE - Dr. Kelly and peer mediators from the High School visited fifth grade classrooms at Gardiner Manor School to spread an anti-bullying message and support the P.S. I Love You cause. High School students shared their experiences while in intermediate school, role played with students and answered scholars’ questions! Thank you to all the high school students who took time to teach anti bullying strategies and continue the work we do each day to help our youth to embrace kindness and acceptance!

International Exchange

Forty-eight Bay Shore High School International Baccalaureate (IB) students traveled to Denmark for an international exchange visit with a Danish high school during winter recess. The students’ goal was to raise their global awareness with a ten-day immersion in Danish culture. The trip began with a threeday exploration of Copenhagen. Excursions to Amalienborg Castle to see the changing of the guard and to Helsingor to visit Kronborg Castle, fabled inspiration for the castle in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, were followed by evenings spent under the colorful lights of the city.

After the whirlwind tour of Danish culture, the students traveled to Odense to meet their host families for the second half of the trip, during which they attended a Danish high school, Sct. Knud’s Gymnasium, and collaborated on international projects. The students received a lesson in Danish language and history. As part of an initiative developed in collaboration with Sct. Knuds’ students, the IB students traveled to the Red Cross Center in Jelling to meet immigrants seeking asylum. The students gathered with refugees from Syria, Uganda and Eritrea to hear

accounts of the harrowing journey to Denmark and the legal process they must go through to earn the right to stay in Denmark. During their final days, the students worked on a series of collaborative activities comparing Danish and American politics, government and society. After a free day with their host families, the IB students returned to Copenhagen for the long flight back to Long Island. Amidst tears and hugs, many IB students vowed to return to Denmark in the future to strengthen and renew bonds with their Danish hosts.

P.S. I Love You

In February, students in Peer Support at Bay Shore High School participated in P.S. I Love You Day. The day, which is celebrated nationally, is a day to stand up to bullying and fight depression and suicide.

Peer Support students left uplifting notes on each locker in the school so their classmates would see a positive message when arriving at school and provided free hugs throughout the day in the

Little Theater lobby. They also went to intermediate level buildings to teach younger students about the importance of being an up stander and not bullying others.

BINGO Madness

Where was the best place to be to play Bingo in March? Mary G. Clarkson School! On Friday, March 3rd, Mary G. Clarkson hosted its annual Bingo Bonanza. The Mary G. Clarkson PFA sponsors the family fun activity every year. This year over 100 parents and children eagerly participated. Many of the Mary G. Clarkson staff also enjoy this activity and the

chance to connect with the community. Pizza, salad, beverages and cupcakes added to the fun. As usual, regular bingo and its variations were played throughout the evening, but Stand Up Bingo, where the last person standing whose numbers had not been called yet wins, is always the most popular. Prizes included a gift card to community businesses

and the choice of a ‘way cool poster,’ as one winner described it. Thanks go out to Mary G. Clarkson’s ever supportive PFA for coordinating the event, as well as Principal Garcia and all of the teachers who volunteered their time. Be sure to come again next year because….B-I-N-G-O, B-IN-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, and FUN WAS HAD BY ALL!

Power of Music

On March 3rd-4th, staff members engage with one another in both “family groups” and large groups to explore important social topics. The weekend, which is completely confidential, also provides students the opportunity to open up and work through any

challenges they might be facing in their own lives. The goal is to strengthen the bonds that exist at the High School and make it an even more inclusive and embracing environment for all. Over the course of the weekend, students heard from two Bay Shore

graduates who are working in the music industry. Ryan Cassata and Tre Trax both came back to the school to share their experiences at Bay Shore High School, their musical journey and advice on following your heart and passion.

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The Smithers Family Center at Columbia University Medical Center for prevention, research and treatment opened last year. Science Expo examine microorganisms, chemists deal with abstract concepts regarding matter, physicists analyze why things work, and astrophysicists consider the universe in its entirety. Each year, middle school students are challenged to explore an area of science they are interested in and to select a topic they want

The Suffolk County Community College Men’s Track and Field Team kickedoff the season by winning the St. Joseph’s College Spring Opener. Team highlights include: Ilya Wilson (Islip) placed second men’s 1500 with a time of 4:21.28 Daniel Velasquez (Port Jefferson Station) finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.02 The 4x400 relay team took silver with a time of 3:40.30; Micah-AssibeyBonsu (Central Islip), Malik Hinds (Bay Shore), J’Son Hobson (Bellport) and Daniel Velasquez (Port Jefferson Station) The 4x800 took third and fourth; the third place squad came in with a time of 9:17.32 Ryan Evans (Middle Country),
