The project began as a way to support St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, where cards are refashioned and sold to support their programs. The Ranch cannot accept several brands, so those were set aside for children’s recycled art projects at LI Women’s Empowerment Network.

Cards For A Cause Keep Islip Clean’s greeting card recycling drive ended on a high note, with thousands of cards collected for three charitable organizations. The project began as a way to support St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, where cards are refashioned and sold to support their programs. The Ranch cannot accept several
brands so those were set aside for children’s recycled art projects at Long Island Women’s Empowerment Network, a shelter in Brentwood. Hundreds of brand new cards were also donated to the drive and KIC has partnered with the American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 to begin a letter writing campaign
for deployed units based out of Fort Totten as well as veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. “I’m grateful to all who took the time to collect and sort cards,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “Many children and veterans will benefit from what truly was a fun project.”

Adults are spending more time at work than ever before and an unfortunate side effect is that as a nation we are becoming more inactive. Physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease. The good news is it is a problem you can fix by encouraging your community and company to take part in the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day on Wednesday, April 1st. On National Walking Day, Americans are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It’s a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to get your family, friends and co-workers started on a healthier way of life. Statistics shows that people stick to walking plans more than other form of physical activity. And walking is one of the easiest and cheapest things you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. Simply walking has many health benefits, which makes National Walking Day the ideal time to kick-start your physical activity routine. Adults should get at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week, while kids should get 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Physical activity can relieve depression, improve your memory and lower your blood pressure. In addition to taking 30 minutes out of your day to get up and walk, there’s another way you can participate in National Walking Day. We’ll be hosting a Physical Activity Post Stroke and Heart Attack Conversation on the Support Network, April 1st, from 10 a.m. ET to 7 p.m. ET. Topics for the all-day come and go event will include all
things physical activity, from cardiac rehab, stroke rehab, walking, jogging, yoga, swimming, and much more. To participate visit, http:// supportnetwork.heart.org/ NWDregistration. A different medical professional will participate for every hour of the chat, answering questions related to physical activity and recovery. Join the Support Network, take part in the chat and get your 30 minutes in for a successful National Walking Day.

Pet Expo A Success The Long Island Pet Expo that was held from March 6 through March 8th at the Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, had a record-breaking number of attendees and pets adopted this year. The 6th annual event had well over 14,000 attendees in the 2.5-day expo. Over 70 pets adopted, the most at any of their shows in the tri-state, from local rescue groups that were at the expo. Over 600 owned dogs came with their owners to enjoy the pet friendly event over the weekend.
“We were very pleased with the number of adoptions at the expo, especially learning that a few senior dogs were adopted including a 10 year-old dog. That makes me very happy!” said Karen Garetano, co-owner of Family Pet Shows, who host the show. “Even though we have been hosting pet shows for 25 years, this 6th show at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood was a great show for us. People came from all over the island and from Queens, New York
City and Brooklyn. It was wonderful to have so many dog owners bring their dogs with them to enjoy the show too. Our vendors were very happy with the turnout and there were a lot of smiling faces, from the children to the adults and even their pets who attended.” Next year’s show is scheduled for Friday through Sunday: March 4th, 5th and 6th, 2016. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying.

The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it. Big, Colorful Ideas For Small Spaces ( N A P S I ) — T h e C(NAPSI)—Making a small room appear larger can be as simple as using color creatively. To add some breathing room to a compact space, all you need are some colorful ideas. “Color is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to transform the look and feel of a room,” says David Bromstad, HGTV® star and celebrity interior designer. “When used in a few well-chosen places, such as a feature wall or statement piece of furniture, color can have a big impact in a small space.” Bromstad offers these color tips for transforming a space from tiny to airy: Create a focal point with paint.
