Sagtikos Manor Historical Society of Bay Shore, has been approved for a matching grant by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation in the amount of $7,350. The grant will be used to restore and preserve 22 19th century prints pertaining to George Washington that have been displayed at the Sagtikos Manor for over 100 years. The collection of 19th century prints identified in the grant was chosen as they are displayed throughout the manor house, and have suffered deterioration over time. The prints were originally purchased and have been displayed since 1902 by Frederick Diodati Thompson, a former proprietor of Sagtikos Manor, to emphasize the importance of President George Washington and his overnight visit to Sagtikos Manor during his tour of Long Island in April 1790. The prints topics range from Mount Vernon and his family, the Revolutionary War and his final days at Mount Vernon. The conservation will reduce discoloration, repair tears and reframe the prints using existing antique glass. The prints will be back on display at the manor for future tours and also be available for special exhibitions. A unique jewel on the south shore of Long Island, Sagtikos Manor has a history spanning 5 centuries. The property was originally purchased from the Secatogue Native Americans in 1692 by S. Van Cortlandt and since 1758 the manor and properties were owned by the Thompson-Gardiner family. Robert David Lion Gardiner was the last proprietor of the manor until it was acquired by Suffolk County in 2002. Sagtikos Manor is a popular venue for events including holiday house tours, antique car shows, antique collectibles and art

shows and a fall festival. Sagtikos Manor Historical Society is contracted by Suffolk County as custodian of the manor house and grounds and provides tours, educational programs and exhibits to promote interest in local and Long Island history. Through fundraisers, grants and donations, Sagtikos Manor Historical Society has provided housekeeping, repairs and many restoration projects. “This is a wonderful opportunity to build a bridge between the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation and the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society, says Christine Gottsch, a longtime volunteer with the historical society. “Sagtikos Manor is an exceptional historic home on Long Island and contains original contents covering 6 generations of the Thompson-Gardiner family”. “The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation is delighted to support the efforts of the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society. They are devoted stewards of Long Island’s regional history, making this great historic home and its collections available to the public,” said Kathryn M. Curran the Foundation’s Executive Director. The Robert David Lion Foundation was the vision and legacy of Robert David Lion Gardiner, to support education and promote interest into the history of New York State and the Town of Islip. The Foundation perpetuates historical collections and artifacts relevant to heritage and traditions. Robert David Lion Gardiner was, until his death in 2004, the 16th Lord of the Manor of Gardiner’s Island. The Gardiner family has owned Gardiner’s Island since 1639, obtained as part of a royal grant from King Charles I of England.

Students learned that those animals too badly damaged to be released back into the wild were kept on and used to educate members of the public about these magnificent creatures. Most of the students had never seen any of these birds up close, despite the fact that, as Mr. Jones explained, they live all over Long Island. In addition, students learned that these birds consumed mice and rats, which otherwise would damage crops grown by local farmers. Shabrece Fuller, a student in Mrs. Schiffman’s class

remarked on how exciting it was to see the birds, especially the red-tailed hawk. “I’ve never seen one so close,” Shabrece explained. “Only high up in the sky.” Joshua Penagos, a student in Mrs. Morrison’s class noted the raptors’ sharp talons. “All of them looked dangerous,” Joshua explained. “You could see why he (Mr. Jones) needed to wear that glove.” The workshops were conducted as part of the 4th grade science unit on “Living organisms and how they adapt to survive their environment.”

The fourth grade students of Gardiner Manor School enjoyed an exhibition of birds of prey that were native to Long Island. Jim Jones, a volunteer with the Wildlife Hospital and Education Center, located in Locust Valley, came to the school to conduct a series of workshops with the students. In the demonstrations Mr. Jones explained the “3 R’s” of the organization’s mission. The students learned that the organization’s goals were to rescue, rehabilitate and release sick, injured or orphaned wild animals back into their proper habitats. The students were excited

Make Your Vehicle Less Vulnerable to Theft

Vehicle theft is something few people imagine happening to them. Until it does. While many motorists may think technology has done wonders to curb vehicle theft, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that a motor vehicle is stolen every 46 seconds in the United States. Auto theft is sometimes mistaken as a victimless crime. After all, insured motorists are typically reimbursed for stolen vehicles, and drivers whose cars are returned after being

stolen can simply submit a claim to have any damages paid for by their insurers. But this characterization of auto theft is untrue, as all motorists, whether their car’s been stolen or not, pay for auto theft. The Insurance Bureau of Canada notes that each year auto theft costs Canadians roughly $1 billion. That figure includes the $542 million insurers pay to fix or replace stolen vehicles each year. Those costs are ultimately passed on to customers, who then indirectly pay for the actions of car thieves. Curbing auto theft is not necessarily the job of drivers, but there are things motorists can do

to reduce the likelihood that their car will be stolen by opportunistic thieves: Avoid keyless ignition systems. Drivers who live in areas that are vulnerable to auto theft may want the peace of mind that comes with traditional keyed ignition systems instead of the more modern and flashy keyless ignition systems. While vehicles with keyed ignition systems are stolen every day, some thieves may find it easier and quicker to steal cars or trucks with keyless ignition systems. Thieves can copy keys used in traditional ignition systems, but that process may require access to the original key and tends to take longer than it takes for thieves to reprogram keyless ignition systems once they’re inside a car. Reprogramming devices are not legal, but they are available and can be used to shut off automobile alarm systems in a

matter of seconds. Lock your vehicle at all times. One of the simplest ways to protect a vehicle from prospective thieves is to always lock the windows and doors, even when you’re inside the vehicle. Auto thieves like things to go quickly and smoothly, and locked doors and rolled up windows only complicate things for thieves. Get in the habit of locking the vehicle when you’re driving, as unlocked doors make it easier for carjackers to surprise unsuspecting motorists. Park smart. Some motorists like to park far away so their vehicles are not at risk of being dinged or scratched by inattentive drivers and passengers getting into and out of nearby vehicles. Others may simply not have the patience to find parking spots in well-lit areas close to home or storefronts. But thieves may target vehicles parked nowhere

near foot or automobile traffic. Always park in parking garages or other well-lit areas, which deter thieves from breaking in and driving away with your vehicle. Etch the VIN onto your windows. Car thieves are not in the auto theft business so they can build a fleet of stolen cars. Upon stealing a car, many car thieves head right for a chop shop, which is a place where stolen cars are disassembled and then sold for parts. By etching the VIN, or vehicle identification number, of your car or truck on your vehicle’s windshield or windows, you may be making your car less attractive to prospective thieves and the chop shops they do business with. Vehicle theft remains a problem even as technology has done much to prevent it. But drivers can take steps to reduce their risk of being victimized by car thieves.

Safely Share the Road

Motorists, motorcycle riders, cyclists, and pedestrians converge on roadways across the globe every day. While many travelers respect their fellow road warriors, the potential for highway accidents is great. Taking measures to share the road safely can greatly reduce all travelers’ risk of being involved in a traffic accident.

Cars should keep their daytime running lights on and use headlights in inclement weather. Rain, fog and snow can impair visual conditions for all travelers, so exercise extreme caution when traveling in adverse conditions. Use safety equipment. Bicycle helmets, motorcycle helmets and other protective gear can save lives. Everyone should wear a properly fitted helmet. Motorists and their passengers should always wear their safety belts. Obey the rules of the road. Whether on foot, on a bicycle, on a motorcycle or in a car, the rules of the road remain the same. Heed

traffic signals, yield to others when applicable and maintain proper speeds. Also, remember to use turn signals when turning and/or changing lanes. Be aware of road conditions. The NHTSA says that road conditions that are minor annoyances to motorists can pose major hazards to motorcycle riders and cyclists. Riders may change speed or adjust position within a lane suddenly in reaction to road and traffic conditions, such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings and grooved pavement. Drivers should anticipate such adjustments. Working in concert, everyone can improve safety for those sharing the road.

ADVANCED LEARNING - Is an International Baccalaureate diploma track the right one for you or your student? The IB program at Bay Shore High School recently held a diploma program orientation night to help students and families answer that question. Faculty and current IB students were on hand to share information about the program and experiences they have had while taking IB courses.

Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from

THREE KINGS DAY - On January 6th, dual language students at Brook Avenue School celebrated Three Kings Day. A tradition in Latin America, the holiday is celebrated with a parranda, or parade. The students visited other classrooms in the school to sing holiday songs in Spanish. They then gathered in the cafeteria to sing Keep Islip Clean songs with Mr. Fernandez, the parent of a dual language student. brought their annual Card Recycling Drive to a very successful conclusion, with approximately 100,000 used greeting cards collected through schools, scouting troop drives and hundreds of individuals who participate every year. Volunteers sorted, processed and packaged all cards. Most were donated to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, who will create “new” cards and the local American Legion for a letter writing campaign to soldiers overseas. TRAINING PROGRAM - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently The last of the 100,000 sponsored the Governor’s Citizen Preparedness Corps (CPC) Training Program at the cards collected during Bay Shore Fire House. The free event, led by Lieutenant Alexandria Wiedenbaum, the Keep Islip Clean Card provided informative and helpful tips on how to stay safe during emergency situations. Recycling Drive. Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that two seniors, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack and Dominick Rich of Bay Shore, have been selected as National Merit Scholar finalists. Both Sachin and Dominick were named National Merit SemiFinalists last spring. The selection was based on their performance on the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) test. They advanced to the WRITERS WORKSHOP - Students in Mrs. Lentini’s kindergarten class at Fifth round of finalists after Avenue School love their writing workshop sessions! EXPANDING VOCABULARY - Students in Mrs. Carino and Mrs. Olsen’s class at South Country School have been working on expanding their vocabulary. Using the game of headbands to guess the word on their headband based on clues from classmates, they have been studying the Greek and Latin roots of words.

Sachin is the president of SJB’s chapter of the National Honor Society. He is also involved in the Radio Club, Mathletes, Peace and Justice Club, SJB’s Genesis Science Research program, and St. John’s Middle States Committee. He is also a second degree black belt in jiu-jitsu. Dominick is the vice president of SJB’s chapter of the National Honor

Society, competes in both Varsity Basketball and Spring Track, and is involved with St. John’s Catholic Charities and Big Brother, Big Sister Programs. Sachin is considering MIT, Stanford, Cornell and Binghamton University as his college choice. He has not decided what his course of study will be, however, his top two interests are computer science and engineering. Dominick applied for early admission and was accepted to Johns Hopkins University. He will attend JHU this fall and plans to study Molecular Biology.

A NEW WORLD - The second graders at Fifth Avenue went to the Bay Shore/ Brightwaters Library in January. Ms. Korzenko, the librarian, showed the students where to find certain books and talked to them about the programs at the library. The students received library cards and were able to take out a book. Ms. Korzenko then read to the students. It was a wonderful experience!

INTERACT DONATION - The Bay Shore High School Interact Club recently donated $1,000 to the Lupus Foundation. The donation was made in memory of Daijah Thomas (Class of 2017). The students raised the money through various fundraisers, including selling Bay Shore Spirit T-shirts, Mothers Day plants and Valentine’s Day roses. Way to go, Interact Club!

LEARNING CODE - Fourth and fifth grade students in Mrs. Opisso’s Coding Club BUILDING WORDS - Kindergarteners in Mrs. Lentini’s class at Fifth Avenue at South Country School are challenged with solving various tasks by using coding School know a lot about building, mixing and fixing words. They recently used plastic blocks to create programs. Each task in the online course requires mathematical skills letters to spell words ending in the letters “-at.” and problem solving abilities to manipulate characters and complete drawings. These tasks are presented to the students with incremental difficulty and solved through the application of computer programming.

BREAKING OUT - Fifth graders at Gardiner Manor School have been “breaking out” in the library media center. Mrs. Shultz introduced Digital Breakout EDU learning games during library classes. Breakout EDU teaches critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving and deductive reasoning. Students work collaboratively in small WHATEVER FLOATS - Students on Team 61 at Bay Shore Middle School recently groups to find clues to solve puzzles that reveal lock combinations. Fifth graders are learned a lot about buoyancy and gravity. They used tinfoil to craft small boats, which motivated, engaged and have so much fun using research skills to solve the puzzles. they then filled with marbles to see how long it took for each boat to sink. Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic ﬂoor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic ﬂoor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. (the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

the medication is to prevent the bladder from contracting too quickly to allow more time to get to the toilet. It may also decrease the frequency. Medications are not always helpful, and in many cases, the side effects may be troubling. When medications are not helpful or cannot be

tolerated, other options include Botox injections in the bladder and neuromodulation. It is important to know that the majority of women with urinary leakage problems may be helped if not cured. There is no reason to suffer in silence. Pharmacies have entire incontinence
