By using a “closeread” text, they learned high-level vocabulary words such as talons, plumage, nocturnal and pellet. Spring Awakening By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Are you all enjoying your one extra hour of daylight? Feels more springy already, doesn’t it? Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. After that, it’s only a matter of time ‘til we’re dying Easter eggs, breaking out the pastels and looking to plant our gardens. After journeying to Ireland this past summer, it was fascinating to see how little the homeland pays attention to this

“holiday.” It is a uniquely American celebration of… well, in theory, Irish pride. In reality… let’s just say, Irish heritage seems to be optional in the grand parade of drunkenness and debauchery that descends upon the entire month of March here in New York. But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterflies and flowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. Get out the cleaning supplies, put away any lingering remnants of winter, and start redecorating for this

new season of rebirth. So, take solace. It’s been one long, tedious winter, to be sure. But spring is ready to be sprung upon us all. Open the windows, let the light in, stop and smell the flowers – once they’ve begun to bloom, of course. Pretty soon, the snowcovered landscape will be a distant memory. We’ve all claimed we’re going to enjoy this upcoming spring and summer that much more after the last several months of bone-chilling cold. So let’s follow through on that, shall we? No time like the present to begin anew.

The event, which took place on Thursday, February 27th, honored twelve African American citizens from the Towns of Babylon and Islip for their service in the community. speaker. His participation with the Gideon Association has allowed him to spread Scripture and serve as a spiritual adviser both locally and internationally. Dr. Tracy Hudson has had both a remarkable academic and professional career. After graduating from Cortland State University with a degree in Education, Dr. Hudson received three Masters Degrees in Health Education; Conflict Resolution and Peaceable Schools; and School Administration. In May 2009, Dr. Hudson completed her doctorate in School Leadership at St. John’s University. Professionally, Dr. Hudson has worked in education for over 27 years. Currently, she serves as principle of Mulligan Middle School in Central Islip. Prior to this role, she served as Assistant Principal in South Huntington, Bellport, and Central Islip. Dr. Hudson has worked tirelessly to develop and implement several different programs to enhance the lives of students and their families; these include: parent and student workshops such as Parent University College, Career, and Beyond; collaborations with outside agencies such as Girls Scouts; and several programs that support and uplift students and their families such as Men of the Future. Dr. Hudson is also a youth advisor for the Town of Islip Youth Council for the NAACP, a Facet Chair for the eastern shore chapter of LINKS, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Paula Santorelli, the daughter of two immigrant parents originally from Trinidad, developed a passion for learning and education at a very early age. After attending Syracuse University, she used her passion for education and learning to pursue a career as an educator

in History at Brentwood High School (BHS) where she also serves as Chair of the Social Studies Department. She strives to educate, inspire, support and protect the interests of every BHS student. She has served as an advisor to several clubs including the Drama Club, has served on several different committees including the School Improvement Team and has led various professional development and parental workshops on the Common Core state standards. Additionally, Ms. Santorelli is currently the Education Chair of the Islip Town Branch of the NAACP. Myles Singer, is an eleventh grade student at Bay Shore High School. He is actively involved in various team sports including, basketball and track. Mr. Singer is very passionate about helping others and giving back to the community. For the past few years he has been a volunteer with the Youth Enrichment Services (YES) Program. Recently, he transitioned into a Department of Labor youth counselor position in the YES summer program. This past summer, Myles participated in the 1st Annual YES and Senator Boyle’s 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. Corey J. Swinson, who passed away in September of 2013, made significant contributions to his community. A graduate of Bay Shore High School, Mr. Swinson went on to play both college basketball and football at Hampton University. After graduating from Hampton, he played for several NFL teams. Thereafter, he decided to pursue a career in personal security, protecting A-list athletes and celebrities. In 2002, motivated by the values of public service and education that his parents instilled in him,

Recently the Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs along with its cosponsors Southside Hospital, the Islip Elks, & the Town of Islip Housing Authority - held its 28th annual “Just Say NO” Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest. The “Just Say NO” Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest has always been held in the spirit of friendly competition, highlighting what people can accomplish when they say “NO” to the detrimental effects of drugs and alcohol. PFA RECOGNITION - Bay Shore’s South Country School PFA works tirelessly to raise funds to support and enhance SCS’s fine educational programs. Most recently, the SCS PFA presented the Bay Shore School District with a check earmarked for the purchase of iPads for 3rd and 4th grade students. This equipment will enable SCS teachers and students to keep moving forward both in the classroom and beyond.

SEPTA FUNDRAISER - Last month, the Bay Shore Special Education PTA (SEPTA) held its 3rd Annual “Shooting for the Stars” Fundraiser at Captain Bill’s. This year, SEPTA honored Mrs. Delia O’Meally, a community member, parent, former Bay Shore teacher and Founder/Director of Special PAL Sport Saturdays. With well over 200 people in attendance, the event was a huge success. SEPTA would like to thank the Bay Shore community and school personnel for their overwhelming support and generosity.

GIRLS INITIATIVE - Bay Shore High School Junior Maya Dixon was selected to participate in GirlsFLI, a young women’s leadership initiative, through the Women’s Fund of Long Island. Ms. Dixon was one of only 25 young women on Long Island selected for this program. The initiative supports connection, growth, and empowerment of young women with a focus on increased social responsibility, advocacy and philanthropy within the Bay Shore community. Ms. Dixon will attend nine Saturday sessions aimed at promoting further discovery of one’s talents and capacities as a leader.
