Sharpshooter Winners Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen recently attended the Town’s 30th Annual Sharpshooter Basketball Contest. This annual tradition brings together children in fourth and fifth grade from across Islip Town for some friendly competition and to help promote drug and alcohol awareness. The event was made possible through the efforts of the Islip Parks and Recreation Department, Northwell Health, the Islip Elks and the Islip Housing Authority. “Over 8,000 children participated this year in qualifying events at their schools and in the finals,” said Councilman Steve Flotteron. “For decades, the Sharpshooter Contest has been one of our proudest traditions and has helped inform our kids about the dangers of substance abuse.” “It’s incredible to watch kids from all across our Town come together

The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” This Dr. Seuss quote adorns the central stairwell at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park and this week it is fitting indeed, as students have been celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday in wide and varied ways, just as the good “doctor” would have enjoyed it! Naturally, starting out
with reading a number of their favorite Dr. Suess books was key. First graders then created their own Cats in Hats, did some Seussian brain-work on crossword puzzles, word searches and other fun activities. They honed their math skills and took part in the democratic process by taking a class vote and documenting their favorite books on a bar chart. Getting hands on
with Mrs. McGerald by making their own green eggs and ham in the classroom made the day even more delicious. And it was especially fun to incorporate some art and science in there, as the students rolled up their sleeves and dove into the color wheel, mixing blue and yellow food dye to create the green they needed for their special eggs!

The truth is: poetry is all around us. It’s in the sun, as it rises over the horizon. It’s in the moon, as it shines through the clouds. It’s in the way the light reflects off her eyes. It’s in the clouds, the trees, a weary morning’s coffee. Chaotic and beautiful in fashion, but yes, poetry surrounds us. It just waits to be found.

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Eighth graders at Saints
Cyril and Methodius School commemorated the month in a number of way, including a dramatic recitation of the poem “I Am a Man: Ode to Martin Luther King, Jr.” by Eve Merriam. They also worked as a team to create and put
on their play “A Protest for Peace” about the Montgomery, Alabama, Bus Boycott in 1955. The efforts of the boycotters proved worthwhile and by the end of the play, the buses were full again after a successful protest.

HEADED TO SCMEA - This year, Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip is proud to recognize two students that will be participating in the SCMEA All County Music Festival. Christopher Kubelka, 8th grade, has been selected to serve as the principal clarinetist in the All county Orchestra. Kayla Dantini, 7th grade, earned a position as a Soprano I in the All County choir. Both students are heavily involved in the music program at Our Lady of Lourdes, and have participated in NYSSMA and SCMEA festivals in previous years.

Engineering or Mathematics; • not be in default on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or repayment of any state award; and • be in compliance with the terms of any service condition imposed by a state award. Students matriculated in these programs of study may be eligible for a STEM Incentive Program award. The program of study must result in an approved occupation. The deadline for submitting the NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program Application is August 15th, 2016. To qualify for a STEM award, a student must be attending a New York State high school and be ranked in the top ten percent of his/her graduating class and enroll in full-time study at a SUNY in the fall term following high school graduation. Awards of Excellence The Art League of Long Island’s ninth annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 122 students from 37 Long Island High Schools. This is an opportunity for what may be the first of many times these promising young art students will show their work in a professional gallery setting. The exhibit is on view in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery through March 13th. An artists’ reception and awards presentation take place Sunday, March 13th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Charlee Miller, Executive Director of the Art League of Long Island, selected
the 20 students to receive awards for their outstanding work. Ms. Miller explains of the selection process: “The Go Ape show is always very exciting. The talent and promise of so many of the young artists made it very difficult to select one piece of artwork over another. One thing is for sure, all of the artwork comes from within each artist’s soul, expressing themselves through color, lines, brush strokes and sculpture that makes the piece as unique as its artist.” The following students have been selected for awards: Awards of Excellence • Deanna Lazo (Bethpage HS) for “Dad’s Still Life,”
