On Saturday, February 8th, Good Samaritan Hospital hosted a free Open Your Heart To Health event at Westfield South Shore Mall in Bay Shore. Shoppers had the opportunity to meet cardiologists, open heart
surgeons, registered dietitians, cardiology technologists and nurses offering information on cardiac health and prevention in addition to blood pressure, pulmonary function and cholesterol screenings.
Participants experienced hands-on activities featuring cardiac procedures while also navigating their way through a larger-than-life inflatable heart.
There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to
remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble
of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the flashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.

He was hired to the lead Suffolk’s Baseball program in 1987 and was subsequently inducted into the Suffolk County Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 1993,” said Kevin Foley, Director of Athletics for Suffolk County Community College. Brown is a member of the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame and the Longwood High School Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to his program’s success on the field, the NJCAA Region 15 Umpires Association has awarded Coach Brown’s program its annual sportsmanship award four times. Brown is currently the president of the NJCAA Region 15 Baseball Coaches Association, a post he has held since 2000. Other inductees this year include Steve Ruzich of South Suburban (Ill.) and Tim Wallace of Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.).

Parents/People As Reading Partners (PARP) is a program that cements the necessary bond between home and school in order to encourage a love of reading in our students. PARP is a statewide PTA-

On Thursday, February 6th, Bay Shore High School hosted students from five surrounding school districts as part of the Ambassador Program created by the Town of Islip’s Anti-Bias Task Force. This Task Force, under the leadership of Rabbi Steven Moss and vice-chair Mary Louise Cohen, has organized the Ambassador Program to educate local
high school students about bias and what they can do to educate their peers. This year, the program expanded to four sessions; the first three were held at Islip Town Hall, Central Islip High School and Bay Shore High School, respectively, while the culminating session will be held at Islip Town Hall where the students will be sworn in as Ambassadors

The daily activity of reading together strengthens a child’s reading and communication skills as well as the parent/child relationship. PARP has

During each of these four weeks, students will read at home with their families, fill out a coupon and return it to school to show their participation: one “coupon” for each week of family reading. On a recent Friday afternoon, Gardiner Manor School 4th graders, along with students from Mr. Lorenz’s class, participated in a Multiplication Bee. The competition, organized by 4th grade teachers Mrs. Curtis and Mr. Dooley, was designed to encourage students to memorize their multiplication facts in a fun and exciting way. Two classes competed against each other at a time.
Mrs. Manzo, the 4th grade Dual Language teacher, rolled a pair of virtual 12-sided dice then projected onto a Smartboard. One student from each class read the numbers as quickly as possible and shouted out their answer; the first one to respond correctly earned a point for their class. Mrs. Nieto’s, Mr. Dooley’s and Mrs. Ridolfi’s/Mrs. McCracken’s classes earned
the top three scores. Mrs. Nieto’s class won the 2-foot tall, blue-and-gold trophy, while Mr. Spikoski noted to his students, “Next time! All you have to do is keep practicing your times tables.” The Multiplication Bee is sure to become a recurring event at GMS, where 4th graders strive to become “Masters of the Multiplication Universe.”

Each year, Ride for Life, led by patient and advocate Chris Pendergast, has stopped at SJC on its trek across Long Island where the College’s Recreation Club has provided the riders with lunch and, in certain instances, monetary donations. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing SJC’s support of Ride for Life,” said Dr. Lamberta. “I was introduced to Chris Pendergast through a dear friend more than 20 years ago and have always admired his dedication, commitment and courage. The Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees and College administration commended the Michael J. Grant Campus’ Speech and Debate team for taking home a collective seven trophies at the 2014 New England Forensics Championship at Suffolk University in Boston on February 8th. Several team members will now compete in the national championships later this spring. “The Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees congratulates the Speech and Debate Team. The team’s skill and ultimate placement at the 2014 New England
Forensics Championship will now see several team members advance to the National Championships in Michigan. We are exceptionally proud of our students, staff and this notable achievement,” said Dafny J. Irizarry, Chairperson of the Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees in presenting an award from the Board of Trustees to the DebateTeam at the board’s monthly meeting on February 20th. Professor and faculty advisor Christopher Holfester was also commended for his dedication and 15 years of work with Suffolk’s debate teams.
The Suffolk Community College Grant Campus Speech and Debate Team has earned a trip to the national championships nearly every year since 1999. The team can boast to having three individual National Championships and two New York State team championships. Suffolk’s team is the only community college to ever win the New York State Team Championship in the 59 year history of the event and won in consecutive years, 2002 and 2003. Team alumni include seven practicing attorneys and four professors, two of whom teach at Suffolk County Community College.

Stony Brook University’s Andrew Flescher, PhD, was awarded first place by the American Association of Publishers (AAP) with a Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Award for his book, Moral Evil, in the publishing category of Theology and Religious Studies. Dr. Flescher is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Preventive Medicine and English, and he is a member of the Core Faculty in the Program in Public Health at Stony Brook Medicine. The AAP’s annual awards program, established in 1976, recognizes the very best in professional and scholarly publishing in more than 40 categories. The PROSE Award entries are judged by peer publishers, librarians, and medical professionals. “I’m stunned to receive this award for my book, which in essence about the subtle but far reaching
consequences of human inaction,” said Dr. Flescher. “I am deeply grateful for all of the insightful people at Stony Brook and elsewhere with whom I conferred over the last four years about the topic and those who helped me to refine my thinking at every stage of the project.” In the acknowledgements section of his book, Dr. Flescher explains that the book is a result of exploring the nature of evil over the past decade with students and colleagues. “Rather than asking about its quantitative reduction or qualitative reinterpretation, I am interested in what we do with the fact of evil. What is a morally constructive model for dealing with the problem of evil? What are the best resources within our religious and moral traditions for thinking about evil in a manner conducive to human flourishing? Whence the motivation for another book about evil,” writes Dr. Flescher in the book’s introduction. Dr. Flescher uses four models to help the reader understand the concepts of moral evil: the presence of badness, the presence of goodness, the absence of badness, and the absence of goodness, which he
