Season Of Extremes By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think? Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt

and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere. Like I said, is it spring yet? So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?

Awesome, sign me up! Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel! Stay tuned. Guaranteed, the first heat wave we experience, all that will go out the window. Too much of anything is irritating, especially when it disrupts our daily routine. A little here and there – sure, we can all deal with that. But this winter has been one of extremes. Of course, as I write these words, the forecast is calling for 50º next week. Time to break out the tank tops and shorts; but better keep that shovel handy!

On Saturday, January 18th, Performing Arts students from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School performed at Carnegie Hall, one of the world’s most famous performance venues. The World Voices In Motion was a dual choral and dance performance sponsored by the Performing Arts Educators, an organization that produces student performances in world class venues. Both SJB’s Bel Canto Chorale and Dance Company performed at this stellar event. The show opened with the seniors from Bel Canto Chorale singing the Star Spangled Banner later followed by a performance

by the entire Bel Canto Chorale and finally the SJB Dance Company. The Chorale performed three pieces including “Word Was God” by Rosephanye Powell; “Bring Me Little Water, Silvy” arranged by Moira Smiley and “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl. The final selection featured soloists Kim Blair of Deer Park and Allison Lane of Greenlawn, both of whom have been received the honor of being selected to the NYSSMA All State Choir. As the singers exited, the dancers took their place and performed, “Dare you to Move” by the Vitamin String Quartet. This was a contemporary piece choreographed by students
