Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently announced that he has formed a Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB), which is a first of its kind in Suffolk County. The purpose of the SOCAB will be to collaboratively establish and implement programs that seek to resolve conflict, concerns and issues regarding the Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves. The Board will also be tasked with the establishment of sub-committees with the mission to further promote communication and understanding among various constituent groups and the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff DeMarco called the initiative an important first step in “preserving public trust in county law enforcement,” which has been the subject of intense media scrutiny in the past year. On December 12th, Bay Shore students at Mary G. Clarkson and Gardiner Manor Schools were treated to a visit from New York State Regent Roger Tilles. Regent Tilles amused an attentive audience of 2nd and 4th graders with

a reading of humorous and interactive poetry pieces. Before leaving, Regent Tilles attended a Meet and Greet session with Board President Mary Louise Cohen, Superintendent Dr. Karen Salmon and Building Administrators where he spoke about

The Town of Islip Youth Bureau and their youth service agency, South Shore Community Organization have joined forces with local School Districts, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Keep Islip Clean to collect jeans for the national “Teens For Jeans” Program. With tough economic times, more families have less to spend on everything, including basic necessities like clothing. The Islip Youth Bureau is encouraging residents, community and school groups, and businesses to support the efforts of the Islip Youth Bureau and the Teens for Jeans program by donating new or used, jeans in good condition (any size) at one of the local drop-off sites before February 14th, 2014. Currently, the locations of the drop off sites are: The Islip Youth Bureau,

Teens For Jeans

More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New York-area schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 4th for a local kickoff of the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2014 robotics game called “Aerial AssistSM.” “The students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition are not only building robots; they are building character, self-respect, and relationships with their peers,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.” The 2014 game, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two-minute and 30-second match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field. In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. SBPLI representatives, team mentors ,volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared

Competition Kickoff experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program. After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made up of motors,

batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components – and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 27-29 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which has also sponsored the Long Island Regional FRC for the past fifteen years. “This proves to be an exciting time for the students and the mentors when they learn the name and the rules of the game for this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition,” said Joani Madarash, Executive Director, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “We were very proud to present the FRC kickoff as we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Regional FRC in March.” During the 2014 season, 49 teams from Long Island, New York City, the surrounding area and the Republic of Brazil will convene at Hofstra University for the Long Island Regional FRC on March 27-29, culminating with the 2014 FIRST Championship on April 24-27 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. “The next six weeks will be crucial for these students as they design and construct their robots for this competition,” said Ms. Madarash. “The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition showcases the talents of these students who learn not only the basic technological aspects of building their robots, but also about other concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and gracious professionalism.” For more information, visit http://www.sbpli.org.

Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our

preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only

rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection? Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

Community Health Partnership On Friday, January 10th, public health leaders and health care providers from the region gathered at the offices of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council in Hauppauge to witness the launch of an historic community health initiative known as the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC). The Long Island Health Collaborative is a bi-county effort to help Long Islanders improve their health. A key component of LIHC’s

work is a comprehensive website that connects Long Islanders to the health and social services they need to stay well or get well. Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New York, “flipped the switch” and officially launched the LIHC and its website at Friday’s event. NSHC is the agency that represents Long Islands’ hospitals and is the coordinating entity for LIHC. Dr. Zucker noted

cooperative effort to reach all Long Islanders and help them achieve improved health. The website is a component of their work. The user-friendly site provides Long Islanders with comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention information at their fingertips. It’s a portal connecting Long Islanders to clinical and social service supports that will get them well or keep them well. The LIHC is one of the few collaborative groups in the state of New York featuring a partnership between two neighboring counties and is the first time that Nassau and Suffolk counties are partnering in such a comprehensive way. Public health and public affairs experts from the region’s hospitals, as well as health department leaders and representatives from social service organizations and public health specialists from colleges, comprise the collaborative. “Health care is a reactive industry . . . we respond to patients’ needs when they

are sick and injured,” said Kevin Dahill, president/ CEO of the NSHC. “What is invigorating about this effort is that it is proactive.” The group initially formed in February 2013 in response to enhanced state and federal government regulations that require all health care providers, local health departments, and community-based service organizations to work together to assure and improve health in communities they serve. It has now moved beyond these mandates and stands as a fully integrated model of health and social service for all of Long Island’s communities. More specifically, the state’s Prevention Agenda 2013 – 2017 mandate asked local county health departments, hospitals, communitybased organizations, schools and other regional partners to join together to address unmet health needs in communities. LIHC performed that task in early 2013 and uncovered unmet needs in the areas of chronic disease prevention and

management, especially related to obesity, as well as a great need for more mental health/substance abuse prevention and treatment services. As a result, LIHC’s efforts will focus on these priorities. LIHC’s ultimate goal is the management of population health, which is really the steadfast coordination and integration of all clinical and social services that assist each and every Long Islander in becoming well and/or staying well. Health care providers - hospitals, doctors, laboratory service providers, nutritionists and social service providers of all types work together to provide coordinated health care. A bi-county walk effort to promote physical activity and that will reveal broad data about health and habits of Long Islanders is also planned, along with health and built-environment policy changes at the local level.

Scholarship Breakfast Set School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) along with Farmingdale State College Foundation will present its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser. The event will be held February 14th at the new Campus Center at Farmingdale State College, starting at 8:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “We Love Robotics!” All proceeds will go to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship. The scholarship, which was created in 2009, is awarded to an incoming

Farmingdale State College student who will receive $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college. It is a tradition for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to Mr. Breithut’s love and admiration for students when he was alive. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island. Admission is a suggested donation of $30. Coat Drive Held

The true spirit of giving was alive and well on the Saturday before Christmas, when the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Multi-Cultural Committee kicked off its 2nd Annual Coat Drive at First Baptist Church. Thanks to some gorgeous weather and generous donations from

local residents, free coats, shoes, business suits and clothing of all sizes were made available, on parking lot fences and multiple tables, to people in need. An assortment of bread, contributed by a local bakery, also proved helpful. Volunteers, including adults and students from both Bay Shore

and surrounding school districts, lent helping hands to sort through, set up and take down the clothing displays. Only through the support of the entire community was the success of this day made possible. Many thanks to all who came out and volunteered their time.

Writers’ Block Honored

Bay Shore High School’s Literary-Art magazine, The Writers’ Block, has received a rating of “First Place with Special Merit” from the American Scholastic Press Association, making it the only scholastic publication in New York, and one of only 17 publications nation-wide, to do so. ASPA’s 2013 Magazine Judge wrote, “The Writers’ Block is an
