Sitting here on a bench, the sun shining down on my head As I look around, I begin to use my five senses Touch I’m touching hot wood that is as warm as a cup of tea Sound I hear birds chirping a soft melody while a lawn mower is buzzing far in the distance, making the birds sing louder Sight I’m seeing green all around me, the trees whooshing in the light breeze very faintly The grass sitting, still rooted in the dirt Scent I smell the faint scent of fresh tangy cut grass as the wind blows the smell all around me. The air is fresh, not a cloud in the sky It’s a vast open blue, as if an ocean without the soaring waves It is hot, but a good hot; mild,where you want to be out all day There seems to be no end in sight, time is gone

(Un)Deck The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it just me, or is the process of “un-decking” the halls one of the least wonderful times of the year? After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over. Just like that. As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree

to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store. ‘Tis the season, indeed. I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking. And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did

when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space. Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now. Perhaps a few Christmas tunes and twinkling lights would make this mundane process more festive.

United States: obesity. What is happening? What is causing this epidemic? Whose fault is it? Better yet, whose responsibility is it to fix it? Imagine waking up one morning and realizing all of the food in your house was missing? Even further, imagine waking up one morning with food in your cabinets that the government put there for you? Obesity is a growing burden on the United States, but why are we targeting and punishing the symptom instead of the problem? Is obesity really about the food? Or is it about the people? The problem is not the

food; it is about how we feel about ourselves. Why are we putting the blame on fast food companies instead of taking responsibility for a problem we caused for ourselves that we are too lazy to fix? It is time for us to start asking questions. It is time for us to start taking charge of our own lives instead of expecting others to come in and save us. We are a part of a life in which it is rare that we take responsibility for our own actions and the repercussions that may follow. This life is ours, and we must have knowledge in order to have liberty. We must take action, not by telling people what to eat and what not to eat, but instead by learning

about ourselves and our bodies and what makes them work. With that knowledge, the self-respect will hopefully follow and the chance for a change will shine through. We must stop treating the symptoms of our problems... instead we must treat the problems themselves if we want to see results. Instead of blindly following the rules that take away our personal rights and decisions, we must take hold of the opportunity we now have that gives us the chance to reinvent ourselves for the better. included trips to Disney, meetings with celebrities, and attending sports events. The middle school students wrote their own letters to Santa, and even involved their friends and family members. After three weeks of writing, the students submitted 1,855 letters! Their act of kindness helped to raise almost $2,000 for the Make-A-Wish foundation.

The students in Mrs. Claudia Leon’s advisory were treated to a special holiday cookie party since they contributed 973 letters on their own. During this holiday season, this event was a wonderful way to build teamwork, develop letter writing skills, and offer students the opportunity to help others.

BOOK DONATION - This holiday season the students of South Country School are grateful for the generosity of the South Country PFA. Each student was given the gift of reading this year as a result of the thoughtful donation of books from the Parent Faculty Association. Each year the Bay Shore Middle School participates in the Macy’s Believe letter writing campaign. For the past seven years, Macy’s has donated $1 to the Make-A-Wish foundation for each letter received, up to $1,000,000. Make-A-Wish grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the U.S., on average, every 38 minutes. Wishes have

During the event, sixth-grade seminar, writing workshop, and ESL students joined more than 75,784,254 students, during 77,439 events in more than 180 countries to develop logic, critical thinking, and problemsolving skills. Following directions and learning from tutorials in their choice of language, the students worked together and learned how to use combine blocks of information to write programs, thus creating skating paths for Anna and Elsa of Disney’s Frozen. They created snowflakes and other patterns as their learned about repeat and loop statements, pixels, and degrees of direction. compositions were selected as winners of the NYSSMA Electronic Music Composition Competition. They participated in composer workshops and had their pieces played at a special concert. Kordell Hammond and Lindsey Tierney were both selected to participate in the NYSSMA All-State Mixed Chorus. Kordell received

the ultimate honor of being selected to sing a solo with the chorus. Congratulations to these fine young musicians and their outstanding music teachers, Christopher Bilella and Edward Schaefer. Kudos to all the members of our music faculty who contributed to the success of these students.

Continued From 7 of degree-recipients varied significantly by the type of high school attended, with 31.1 percent of public school sophomores reaching a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 61.9 percent of sophomores from Catholic high schools and 57.1 percent of those from other private high schools. The College Degree Is Just The Start Of The Advantages The survey went on to document subsequent advantages of higher salaries and lower unemployment. Students who didn’t seek or attain a degree in the 10 years of the survey faced an unemployment rate of 17 percent in 2012, with an additional 10 percent saying they were out of the labor force entirely (i.e., not looking for work). By contrast, only 4 percent of students who were able to attain a bachelor’s degree said they were unemployed. The students who completed their degree programs also had higher incomes. One-third of the students with degrees reported salaries of $40,000 or more in 2011, compared with 21% of those who earned an Associate’s Degree, and only 14% of the students who had not earned a degree. A fresh start to celebrate the New Year, the JaramilloMarquez family joined Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk to celebrate the beginning of construction on their future home in Bellport. Demolition crews led the efforts, removing the previous abandoned, uninhabitable structure and preparing the land for the affordable home build. “It is extremely gratifying to see another derelict property removed from the North Bellport community,” stated Legislator Kate Browning. “Working in conjunction with the Town of Brookhaven and Habitat for Humanity we have kept dozens of properties from being auctioned off to speculators, and instead have helped families to become homeowners.” The property was transferred to Habitat Suffolk by way of legislation from Suffolk County to the
