It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. So was the year 2016, at times. And so we bid farewell, and look ahead to 2017 with the same mix of enthusiasm and anxiety, optimism and apprehension. All years are a product of their individual months, weeks, days, hours even. Highs and lows become woven into the fabric of our being and, somehow, intertwine into yet another chapter of life. As much as the collective opinion seems to hold that this Continued On 6 past year was one of the
most trying on record, for many reasons, I’m sure it held just as much hope and promise for others. It’s all a matter of perspective. Ultimately, each moment needs to be taken on its own, able to stand up by itself and not be compared and contrasted to the big picture. Too much focus on the future, and on things beyond our control, leads to missing those opportunities right in front of us. This is not to say that we should forgo any life plans we may have; but there is a balance. As we analyze and overthink, life marches on around us.
And so the goal, this year, should be to live, to experience, to embrace those moments swirling around us. And to savor them. Good, bad or indifferent, everything happens for a reason. We may not understand the dynamics of why, or what it may lead to down the road; but eventually, the path becomes clearer. The important thing is not to stray too far off the road in the meantime. The idealism in all of us suggests that the best is yet to come. Here’s hoping that 2017 is exactly that for everyone.

The Long Island Geographic Information Systems User Group (LIGIS) held its annual fall conference on Wednesday, November 16th, at Stony Brook University’s Wang Center. Sayville High School’s Research in Science and Engineering teacher, Maria Brown, co-presented with Samantha Hmelovsky, a bright and talented sixth grader at Sayville Middle School. The title of their presentation was, “Using ARC GIS Online to Analyze Student-collected Environmental Data.” Samantha presented the findings of her outstanding geospatial research on water quality related to biodiversity in the Carmans River, which she conducted as a fifth grader under the guidance of teacher Kathy Whitehurst. Samantha, along with twenty four other prodigious fifth graders, was trained to use Arc GIS Online during the 2015 STEM Symposium held at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School. This training was done in collaboration with the New York State Central Pine Barrens Commission’s program, “Day in the Life of a River,” directed by local Sayville resident, Melissa Parrott. The training also combined efforts with Brookhaven National Laboratory’s “Open Space Stewardship” program, directed by Melvyn Morris. Samantha shared her geospatial analysis of potential pollutants and land uses that may be adversely impacting water quality and therefore, biodiversity in different sections of the river. She also shared her personal experience using ArcGIS Online and concluded, “

Both Samantha and fellow student Adam Burgardt received awards for their posters at the conference. Additionally, Samantha and Adam’s exceptionally advanced posters were accepted into ESRI’s International GIS User Group Conference, Map Gallery, held in San Diego, California in June of 2016. The pair placed first and second, respectively, for the elementary poster category. Both were recognized for their superior work by Sayville’s Board of Education in November of 2016. Samantha’s

A pair of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) piano students, Luke Gentil (Half Hollow Hills CSD) and Jeremy Kaplan (BellmoreMerrick CHSD), were featured performers at the Grace Music School’s official kickoff event for their Islandwide piano competition. The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at Carnegie Hall. At the event, Mr. Gentil performed two of his original compositions, “Billade No.
2” and “Gentil Invention No. 1.” Mr. Kaplan performed a medley of Billy Joel songs, beginning with “Waltz No. 2” from Fantasies & Delusions. He also performed the jazz standard “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck. “What more fitting way to celebrate Long Island’s aspiring pianists then having a piano competition,” said Grace Heaphy, director of the Grace Music School. “It gives them a chance to perform at one of the greatest music venues in the world.” The
competition will be held in April of 2017 at the worldfamous Steinway and Sons piano showroom in New York City. The winner will perform at Carnegie Hall in June. “We could not be more proud of these two flourishing musicians,” said LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson. “They are an excellent representation of the gifted youngsters that constitute our school. They are the embodiment of Long Island’s up-and-coming artistic talent.”

Yellow Dot Kits Available Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wants to remind residents that Yellow Dot medical information kits for vehicles and homes are available through his Office and may be obtained by calling the Sheriff’s Office’s Community Relations Unit at 631.852.3763. The kits are made available through the NYS Sheriff’s Association, in collaboration with local Sheriff’s Offices, and are distributed to the public free of charge. The Yellow Dot kit
contains a medical information card and a Yellow Dot program decal. Participants complete the card, attach a recent photo, place it in the glove compartment of their vehicle, and place the Yellow Dot decal on the rear driver’s side window. First responders arriving at the scene of an emergency will be alerted by the Yellow Dot decal to look for the medical information card in the glove compartment. It may also be used in a participant’s residence
to alert first responders when they enter someone’s home. The Sheriff’s Office has distributed than 10,000 Yellow Dot to County residents since the programs’ inception in 2013. Magical Musicians East Islip High School seniors Kevin Jacobsen and Michael Stevens were named All-National musicians, and were chosen to participate in the National Association for Music Education’s All-National Symphony Orchestra concert, held on November 13th in Dallas, Texas. Both exceptional students spent four days rehearsing from morning to night in preparation for their concert, and attended workshops to help enhance their musical ambitions and knowledge. They prepared challenging music under the baton of Dr. William LaRue Jones, a world-renowned conductor. The NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles include a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus and jazz ensemble. Jacobsen and Stevens qualified for their state-level honor ensemble program and competed against top students for a spot in these national ensembles. They were two of just 13 students from New York State selected for All-National Symphony Orchestra. Statewide, Jacobsen was one of only two trumpet players accepted, while Stevens was one of only two French horn players. “The East Islip music department is extremely proud of Kevin and Michael for representing the district on the national level,” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages. Both East Islip student-musicians previously attended All-State in their junior year, played this year with the New York State Council of Administrators of Music
Education’s All-County Symphony Orchestra, and are members of East Islip’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. Both travel into New York City every Sunday to participate in the New York Youth Symphony. They were recognized by the district’s Board of Education at a recent meeting. Jacobsen has racked up many accomplishments as a
trumpet player, having immersed himself in music. He began playing trumpet in the third grade, and by the fourth grade, had participated in the New York State School Music Association. He has since been chosen for Suffolk County Music Educators Association recognition each year. Jacobsen is very active in East Islip’s music program, playing in the school’s honors wind ensemble, honors symphony, honors choir and jazz ensemble, as well as in the pit orchestra for school musicals. This past summer, he was selected to attend the prestigious
Boston University Tanglewood Institute. He has played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra for three years and the Nassau/Suffolk Band for the past three years. “All-National was a life-changing experience, because it was amazing to hear other students from different states who all have the same passion for music I have,” said Jacobsen. Stevens, who plays piano as well as French horn, began playing piano in kindergarten and horn in first grade. He has been participating in NYSSMA since kindergarten, including 24 NYSSMA festivals. He is likewise active in the school’s music program, participating in East Islip’s school’s honors wind ensemble, honors symphony, honors choir, jazz ensemble and pit orchestra. For the past two summers, Stevens has traveled through China and Europe with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. He also attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute as well as other summer music programs, played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra for seven years, and attends the Juilliard Pre-College Saturday program. “There is something magical about having musicians from around the country and variety of backgrounds unify to create music together,” said Stevens. “Despite the diverse cultures, what the orchestra was able to produce was quite amazing.”

Tips for Professionals Returning to School When a new school semester starts, children and young adults may not be the only ones who are returning to the classroom. Many adults resolve to expand their professional horizons by returning to school even after they have established themselves in their professions. Some may aspire to develop skills specific to a particular job, while others may want to make it easier to transition to a new career.
Schedule a campus visit. Choosing a school is an important decision, and even though you might not be spending as much time on campus as you did when you were younger, don’t overlook the importance of a campus visit. A member of the admissions faculty or even a current student may be able to offer a guided tour, explaining the layout of the campus, amenities and resources. He or she also may point out parking areas, study locations
and the best way to navigate the campus. This will help alleviate a fish-out-of-water feeling the first day of class.

In 2013 and 2014, the average cost of a year’s tuition at a Canadian university was $5,772. The high cost of education compels many students to find ways to finance their education. For many, that means exploring available scholarships. Scholarships come in different forms and are usually offered to students as a gift to be put toward college or university
costs. Some schools offer scholarships, while other scholarships are sponsored by outside organizations. Students who meet certain requirements may be eligible for scholarships. While academic or
athletic skills are the first criteria associated with scholarships, they are not the only avenues by which students can pursue scholarships. Scholarships may be offered to students of certain ethnic groups; children of employees at particular companies; or to students who live in particular states. Local branches of organizations like the Rotary Club or Kiwanis also may give out scholarships. To improve one’s odds of getting a scholarship, consider the following tips. The number of adult undergraduates continues to grow. The National Center for Education Statistics says 33 percent of the 18 million undergraduate students in the United States are over the age of 25. Students over the age of 30 make up 22 percent of the student body in colleges and universities. The NCES also projects a continued rise of older students through 2020.
Going back to school can be an exciting time, but one that also comes with a bit of trepidation. Many adults may not have been in a classroom in more than a decade. Many things have changed with regard to academia in recent decades, and adults may need some extra time and help to make their transition back to student go smoothly.
