Piano Competition Launched A pair of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) piano students, Luke Gentil (Half Hollow Hills CSD) and Jeremy Kaplan (BellmoreMerrick CHSD), were featured performers at the Grace Music School’s official kickoff event for their Island-wide piano competition. The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at Carnegie Hall. At the event, Mr. Gentil performed two of his original compositions, “Billade No. 2” and

“Gentil Invention No. 1.” Mr. Kaplan performed a medley of Billy Joel songs, beginning with “Waltz No. 2” from Fantasies & Delusions. He also performed the jazz standard “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck. “What more fitting way to celebrate Long Island’s aspiring pianists then having a piano competition,” said Grace Heaphy, director of the Grace Music School. “It gives them a chance to perform at one of the greatest music venues

in the world.” The competition will be held in April of 2017 at the worldfamous Steinway and Sons piano showroom in New York City. The winner will perform at Carnegie Hall in June. “We could not be more proud of these two flourishing musicians,” said LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson. “They are an excellent representation of the gifted youngsters that constitute our school. They are the embodiment of Long Island’s up-andcoming artistic talent.”

Creativity and science came together at last weekend’s FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmage at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries. Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. Last weekend’s scrimmage was the first event in the 2016-2017

Home for the Holidays her case managers and social workers helped with life skills, job training, health care, and linked her to a host of other community supports that contribute to stability and independence. Funding is provided under New York State’s Homeless Housing & Assistance Program, which allows CHI to acquire and rehabilitate properties to serve homeless families and individuals. “Six years ago, I couldn’t imagine being where I am today. I can never repay CHI for the help they gave me and my family,” said Ms. Nielsen. When Ms. Nielsen got to CHI, she was homeless, nine months sober, and traveling almost daily by bus to Stony Brook Hospital to care for her premature baby girl, who remained in the NICU for three months. She also has a son who was one year old, at the time, and daughter, then 10. From emergency housing in Middle Island, CHI accepted her into the agency’s transitional housing in a home in East Patchogue. Due to the lack of permanent housing, CHI extended her lease at that home for almost two years, enabling Ms. Nielsen to care for her children and get back on her feet. This month Ms. Nielsen and her family moved into a new home, independent of CHI. Due to the help she received at CHI, Ms. Nielsen was able to become

the kind of parent she has always wanted to be. Her older daughter was being bullied at school. She was able to get her the help she needed, sending her to a therapist and addressing it with the school. That same daughter will graduate early from high school this June and has already been accepted to Jamestown College in the fall. Her two younger children are enrolled in their new schools and doing well. Her younger daughter, Rayna, has special needs and receives occupational and physical therapy, and schooling that meets her needs. Now that both younger children are a little older and enrolled in school full-time, Ms. Nielsen is ready to start a full-time job. She is excited about the road ahead. “From my CHI case managers I learned to set small goals and work my way toward them and that’s how I’ve accomplished a lot of things in the past six years,” said Ms. Nielsen. “That’s what I’ve taught my children to do too. We stick together and support one another. This growth and change starts in the home.” “I feel so grateful for my time at the CHI house in East Patchogue. I had never heard of a program like this that really turned my life around. I hope that house brings as many memories to the next family as it did for mine.”

Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. And a formerly homeless family of four will be spending their first holiday season in their new home in Mattituck, thanks to their efforts and assistance from the nonprofit Community Housing Innovations (CHI). Regina Nielsen and her three children moved in to their new home on December 1st, five and a half years after she and her family ended up in a CHI emergency shelter. After six months in emergency housing, Ms. Nielsen was accepted into CHI’s supportive housing program, which provided her with the tools to gain independence. Often, families with special needs become trapped in a cycle of dependency, as their benefits alone are insufficient to maintain stable housing and they succumb to the stress of an impossible situation, devoting all of their time to finding the rent. In supportive housing, Ms. Nielsen not only gained affordable rental housing,

When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories. For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house. From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

confines of Long Island City. With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included. Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets. Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold. Eighth Graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park have ample opportunity to flex their creative muscles while developing team-building skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group. Mrs. Judy Keeler, veteran SSCM Middle School teacher uses a studentcentered reading strategy called Literature Circles. Student teams work together to select a book that they will read and then each student takes on a specific role in the “Lit Circle,” allowing the group to work together to analyze the story line and present their take on the piece of literature they’ve read.

Mrs. Keeler introduces the concepts to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, the students’ presentations surely gain momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are in the reading process, something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the

works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work - life skills they will take with them into their careers and use for years to come. Over the course of three days, Mr. Frank Romeo, Bay Shore High School Class of 1967, provided students and staff of Bay Shore High School with a first hand account of his experience as a soldier during the Vietnam War. Mr. Romeo’s presentation commenced on December 5th where students and staff were invited to participate in a museum walk-through/ presentation documenting Mr. Romeo’s experience as a soldier during the Vietnam War. Using art and artifacts indicative of the time period to tell a story, Mr. Romeo, along with other Vietnam veterans, produced the artwork that was on display. Mr. Romeo’s story continued to be told when he invited students to hear him speak more in depth about his journey as a soldier on December 6th and 7th. Mr. Romeo entertained any questions that students had regarding his experience as a soldier

and struggles with P.T.S.D. at the December 6th and 7th presentations. As a way of giving back to Mr. Romeo and the generosity he has shown to the students and staff of Bay Shore High School, he was invited to attend a luncheon in his honor on the last day of his presentation. At the luncheon, students posed questions for Mr. Romeo and had the opportunity to hear some of his personal struggles with P.T.S.D. On the evening of December 5th, members of the Bay Shore community rallied together to experience the story of Mr. Romeo. Mr. Romeo graciously shared his experience during the Vietnam War with members of the Bay Shore community through a museum walk/open forum discussion. Mr. Romeo’s compelling experience during the Vietnam War sparked the interest of community members, which led to an

open discussion, geared at questioning the morality of war and the steps we can take as Americans to resolve our differences overseas. A collaborative effort was made by community members to come together and discuss the realities of the Vietnam era. Frank Romeo comments, “The men I served with in Vietnam are mentally still there. It is up to you and me to share the experiences of the veterans of the Vietnam War to ensure that their legacy is not forgotten.” Mr. Romeo’s story will echo for generations in the minds and hearts of the individuals who had the pleasure to encounter his experience. The Bay Shore School District thanks Mr. Frank Romeo for sharing his story and making history come alive and the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund for sponsoring this event.

New Year’s Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year. Many people spend the final moments of the year celebrating with family and friends. As joyous as such celebrations tend to be, it’s important that New Year’s revelers keep certain safety precautions in mind when celebrating the end of one year and the dawn of the next. Arrange for transportation in advance. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 304 people die in drunk-driving crashes in the days surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Eve each year. Before heading out on New Year’s Eve, celebrants should ensure their safety by arranging for transportation to and from the festivities. Choose a designated driver to drive throughout the night, or agree to utilize a taxi or shuttle service if everyone plans to consume alcohol. Men and women who volunteer to be designated drivers should be especially alert on the roadways, preparing to drive in potentially inclement weather and

being on the lookout for fellow motorists who might be driving erratically. If possible, take public transportation to and from the festivities so no one is tempted to drive after consuming alcohol. Pick a meetup spot in case anyone gets separated from

Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice

of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Seven Steps To Keeping Your Pet Healthy (NAPSI)—A total of 68 percent of U.S. households own a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), with 56.7 million owning a dog and 45.3 million owning a cat. If your home is among them, you may care to heed these seven hints to keep your pet healthy from the experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Maintain your pet at a healthy weight; 2. Exercise your pet; 3. Feed a balanced, nutritious diet; 4. Visit the veterinarian at least once a year to make sure your pet is healthy and to help detect problems earlier; 5. Vaccinate your pet against potentially deadly diseases such as distemper, parvo, panleukopenia and rabies; 6. Spay/neuter your dog or cat; 7. Keep your pet free of

ticks and fleas. Fleas can be responsible for skin conditions such as flea allergy dermatitis in dogs and miliary dermatitis in cats. Fleas also transmit other parasites including tapeworms. A flea infestation is something no pet owner ever wants to face—especially as nearly half of dogs and 62 percent of cats sleep in their owner’s bed, according to the APPA.
