He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.

Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, ﬂitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish ﬂakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldﬁsh quite like you.

Student Spotlight EVOLUTION

The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

own faces and trust the word of fraudulent command? In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the

present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

Eleven year old Aliasha Polson, a sixth grade student at Bay Shore Middle School, will perform the starring children’s role of “The Prince” in Frank Ohman’s New York Dance Theatre production of

The Nutcracker at Hofstra University. Aliasha began his classical ballet training with Frank Ohman this past summer, taking private lessons, boys’ class, the summer intensive program, and mixed division classes. He also studies tap, jazz, African, hip hop and lyrical dancing at the Vinettes Cultural Center. Aliasha will share the role with Maximilian Brooking Landegger, who performed as the prince for two seasons at Lincoln Center with the New York City Ballet. Ohman’s production is the largest Nutcracker on Long Island with added music, scenes and dances and is the only one performed in the tradition of Balanchine’s New York City Ballet

version. Performances are on December 19th at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and December 20th and 21st at 12 noon and 5 p.m. Tickets are available at www.ohmanballet.org or by calling 631.462.0964. ($40 adults, $35 seniors and children). Tickets for the Friday 2 p.m. show are $20 regardless of age. With the elegant Christmas Party Scene, the Battle of the Toy Soldiers and Giant Mice, the dazzling snow storm, and the brilliant dancing and choreography, “The Nutcracker” appeals to all ages. In all, a cast of eighty children, pre-professional and professional dancers will bring this classic story ballet to life on the stage of the John Cranford Adams Playhouse.

Kids’ Talk The MS Guidance Dept. recently concluded its 6th grade Kids’ Talk program. Each 6th grader met with their counselor in small groups to discuss a wide variety of topics vital to the success and well-being of the student in transition from 5th to 6th grade. Common questions such as, “What is the role of my counselor?” and “How do I make an appointment if I need to speak with my counselor?” were answered. Advice including, but not limited to, organization, prioritizing and time management, were also

touched upon during the meeting. Students were also introduced to the Naviance Program; a personal college and career exploration folder accessible through the Bay Shore School District website. All students were pre-registered with a username and password, which enables them to access and explore potential career and college paths. The 6th graders will assemble again in the spring to further explore the Naviance program under the guidance of their counselors.

Currently underway are the 8th grade Naviance presentations. Counselors are meeting with 8th graders in the MS computer lab to facilitate the ‘Strength Explorer’ exercise through Naviance. Strength Explorer is designed to identify a student’s natural talent or the way in which they naturally think, feel or act. Once identified, these characteristics can be matched to a particular field of occupation prompting further exploration

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB

found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided

to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According

to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit

bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We

encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER - 25 year-old country singer and Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale visited patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Monday, December 8th.
