The Christmas Tree Project began eight years ago in Colorado Springs, and its initial success has attracted national interest from people in other cities wanting to donate, get trees as well as wishing to emulate its success. The project is a local grassroots effort to provide free, fullydecorated Christmas trees to families in need. Last year, requests for trees almost sextupled to 17,500 from 2,780 the previous year, arriving nationally from 47 U.S. states and as far away as from Karachi,

Pakistan. “A beautiful, sparkling Christmas tree can make all the difference in the world to a family going through hard times right now,” according to Michelle and David Fein, who started the project in 2010. “This turned out to be such a happy accident for us, that it’s a thrill to be doing it again.” “In this season of giving,” CBS news correspondent Alex Wagner explained last year, “One Colorado couple never expected that donating their old

Hundreds of children on Long Island and throughout the region, many of them facing medical crises, will have their holiday season brightened this year thanks to the Unity Holiday All Stars toy drive, which collected more than 650 toys on Sunday, Dec. 6. With COVID-19 restricting crowds and gatherings, this year’s collection was a “driveby” drop-off, with local volunteers collecting

toys in a contactless pickup from donors’ cars. Donating families received to-go arts and crafts sets as a thank-you. The toys will be distributed to children in need through myFace, which supports children with craniofacial conditions; the NYU Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities; University Hospital in Brooklyn; and to Mepham High School in Bellmore; Bay Shore High School; and the Longwood

School District in Suffolk County. The entire project sprang quite serendipitously from a simple one-line Craigslist ad the Feins posted to give away their artificial Christmas tree in 2010. They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree, that Michelle and David decided they had to try to meet the demand. They told their friends, and soon the word spread. The story touched a nerve in the Colorado Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted The Christmas Tree Project to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away. In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising. “It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.” The 2010 ad David and Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including: “I have 6 kids and no tree…we would like it if it’s still available.” “If this tree is still available, I sure could use it. My kids are 6 and 9. We won’t have a lot under it this year but there will be something there.” “My husband broke his leg 5 weeks ago and we are really struggling. We need a tree desperately.” “It will be my daughter’s first Christmas and we just

Fr. Richard E. Simpson, rector, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Islip, is adamant: “Christmas joy this year is about fighting hunger.” He adds that by the end of this year, it’s estimated that 54 million Americans will go to bed hungry, with 17 million of those children. Santa agreed, so despite December 5th’s torrential rainfalls, high winds, and cold temperatures, the church, at 754 Montauk Highway at St. Mark’s Lane

in Islip, NY, continued its monthly outdoor contactless food drop, raising over 20,000 items. Santa had helpers from the parish, communityat-large and Islip Rotary, as well as students from Stony Brook University. They all managed to protect the food, and themselves, from the wet. Shrugging off the terrible December 5th weather, Santa said he was “proud owner of an umbrella.” And the cars

just kept rolling in to drop off food. All donations were sent to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of LI Cares. The organization distributes food to pantries at churches, shelters and senior communities throughout Long Island’s South Shore. Holiday Farm Lights Tour At Spirit’s Promise Rescue

Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue (2746 Sound Avenue, Riverhead, NY 11901 [631] 875-0433 www. spiritspromiserescue.org) is celebrating the holiday season with a special “Holiday Farm Lights Tour” which will be held on specific dates and times in December. The tour will last 30 minutes and guests will enjoy whimsical light displays, visit Santa’s Workshop and interact with familiar characters including Santa’s Reindeer. The tour will be held outdoors and social distancing and masks will be required at all times. Guardians of Rescue Finds Dog Struggling to Walk, Creates Medical Fund to Help Save Him In a small town in Georgia, where they have no animal services available, a dog that has been named Bam Bam was found badly injured. He appeared to have been hit by a car and was left without medical care. Bam Bam sustained injuries that have left him paralyzed, but Guardians of Rescue have stepped up to take on the challenge of getting him the medical assistance that he needs to walk once again. They are asking for people in the community to chip in to help make it happen. “This poor dog was basically left to die after what looks like being hit by a car,” explains Robert Misseri,

president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “He struggles to try and move even the slightest bit and it’s heartbreaking to watch. We know that we can help him, but to do so we need the help of compassionate people in the community.” Guardians of Rescue have started a medical fund where people can donate to help raise the money necessary to care for Bam Bam. He was found alone and struggling to move, but could wag his tail. The funds will be put to use providing him with the necessary medical technology needed to help him walk again, as well as help him receive the medical care he needs to

recover from his other injuries, and be adopted out. Bam Bam will need a specialist in order to be able to walk again. During the medical exam, the MRI showed that Bam Bam sustained nerve damage. Even with that, Guardians of Rescue is optimistic that with the right medical care the dog will be able to walk again. He will need costly treatment to help him reach that point, but the signs are there that he will be able to recover with the right care. “Imagine how frightened Bam Bam must have been to be hit by a car and left with injuries that made him unable to move,” Misseri. “One look at this dog, at how brave and determined he is to move around, and it’s clear that we have to do everything we can to help him.” Guardians of Rescue appreciates all donations, make shoppers eligible no matter what size they for certain discounts. may be.
