Teatro Yerbabruja’s Role In Bay Shore’s Cultural Revitalization Is Changing – For The Better A Press Conference and “Celebration” has been scheduled for 2:00PM on Sunday December 10, 2023, at the Second Avenue Firehouse, 17 Second Avenue, in Bay Shore. The purpose: To discuss the changes that are occurring regarding Teatro Yerbabruja’s tenure at its Second Avenue Firehouse Arts Center. Since its incorporation in 2004, Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja, Inc. has been producing visual and performing arts events as a means of achieving constructive social and economic change for Latino and other marginalized populations on Long Island -- primarily in its hub area of Central Islip, Brentwood, and Bay Shore-North Bay Shore. The steady growth of its activities have included numerous fine art exhibits; workshops; theatrical, musical, dance and other performing arts events; street festivals; and, for the past decade, the iconic Long Island Puerto Rican/Hispanic Parade. Its first arts center, leased from 2014-2018 in downtown Central Islip, enabled Teatro Yerbabruja to beautify that property and improve economic opportunity in the area while undertaking numerous arts and other cultural activities. When that lease was lost at the end of 2018, the owner of the Second Avenue Firehouse stepped up and offered to lease that property to Teatro Yerbabruja, which gladly accepted and, in less than three months, signed a lease and moved in. Some 24 years ago a newly formed nonprofit, South Shore Restoration Group, Inc. (SSRG), acquired and restored a derelict building located at 17 Second Avenue In Bay Shore. The building had

been identified by the Bay Shore Historical Society as the hamlet’s first firehouse. Originally built in 1900, and known as the Second Avenue Truck House, the building had lost many of its distinctive architectural features and was in need of major renovation. SSRG recognized the role that a restored historic structure could play in the renaissance or Bay Shore’s then moribund downtown. In 2000, with the invaluable help of Bay Shore architect Anthony Szekalski, SSRG completed a full-scale renovation of the building and named it the Second Avenue Firehouse. The building was added to the New York State and National Registers of Historic Sites and began its new life as a cultural arts center. After close to two decades as owner and operator, SSRG decided that it was time to find the next steward of the historic Firehouse. With the approval of the Office of the New York State Attorney General, SSRG has transferred ownership of the Second Avenue Firehouse property to

years-long tenant Teatro Yerbabruja. “SSRG knows that Teatro Yerbabruja will continue to play a major role in the renaissance of Bay Shore’s downtown,” stated SSRG’s President and long-time Bay Shore resident, Susan Barbash. “A wellestablished, grant-worthy, Latinx/BIPOC-centric cultural organization, Teatro Yerbabruja has effectively built social and economic bridges across Bay Shore’s increasingly diverse populations. We look forward to the next chapter in the life of this important Bay Shore landmark.” Teatro Yerbabruja’s founder and Executive Director, Margarita Espada, remarked: “We’re truly proud and thankful for this opportunity. We’re aware of how hard Bay Shore’s residents and businesses have worked to achieve revitalization of the downtown area. We believe that our plans for the Firehouse property and for activities there and elsewhere in Bay Shore can help achieve that sought-for renaissance while building the social inclusion essential to its success.”

External Diploma Program The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency based

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

FCA Names Julie Robinson-Tingue Vice President, Chief of Staff FCA, one of Nassau County’s oldest and largest nonprofit health and human services organizations, has named Julie Robinson-Tingue Chief of Staff. In this newly created position, Robinson-Tingue will report directly to President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds. “I am thrilled to welcome an administrator and communicator of Julie’s caliber to FCA,” said Dr. Reynolds. “Her decades of experience in both regional and national health care as well as in the not-for-profit sphere is a potent combination. She is sure to be a great asset to me and to FCA as a whole.” In her new position, Robinson-Tingue will be an important part of the management team, serving as a strategic and

administrative partner providing high level support to Dr. Reynolds. She will be tasked with maximizing efficiencies across FCA to help expand the number of people it can serve, cultivating increased communication across FCA’s divisions, and continuing to strengthen a culture of value and inclusion among FCA employees by closely partnering with front line teams and administrators. “I look forward to contributing to FCA with the knowledge and tools I’ve acquired from my diverse healthcare experiences over many years,” said RobinsonTingue. “My various positions have fine-tuned my ability to present the macro picture of health care and advise how local organizations can better

navigate this landscape to assist clients needing or receiving care. We must continue to seek out new and better ways to help people access the care they deserve.” Prior to joining FCA, Robinson-Tingue spent 2 1/2 years with Optum Health (part of UnitedHealth Group), most recently as Senior Director, Corporate Communications. She was part of a national corporate communications team that develops and oversees strategic processes and provides counsel for all executive, internal and external communications that impact Optum care delivery organizations nationwide. Before her time at Optum, RobinsonTingue was Senior Director, Strategic Communication for Northwell Health. She

is a graduate of Northwell Health’s 2016 High Potential Experiential Executive Development Program reserved for the top one percent of its leaders.
