SCOUTS BSA TROOP 43 HONOR OUR VETERANS - Scouts BSA Troops 43-B and 43-G both chartered by AMVETS POST 76 of Bay Shore along with scouts from Troop 175, were humbled to assist with the Veterans Day Wreath Service at the memorial located at the Bay Shore Train Station and then serving lunch to our Veterans immediately after at AMVETS POST 76. Troop 43 remembers and thanks all who have served and are currently serving in our armed forces along with their families and loved ones for their sacrifices, not just on Veterans Day but every day.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless.

There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even

So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Free Heart Screening And Health Information For Teens BAY SHORE, NY – Southside Hospital’s pediatric cardiology team will provide free cardiac risk assessments and heart health information for teenagers on December 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free screening is part of the hospital’s Body Metrics, Evaluate, Assess and Teach (BEAT) program, which has been made possible through a grant from local charitable group Gavin’s Got Heart. On December 7, Southside Hospital pediatric cardiologists and other health care practitioners will evaluate teenagers’ blood cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and the electrical activity of their heart through an electrocardiogram (EKG). In addition to diagnostic testing, which will take place at hospital’s presurgical testing area, students will learn best practices to keep their hearts healthy. That includes exercise and nutritional tips as well as training on how to perform handsonly cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillator to help others who might be in cardiac distress.

“This is the fourth year we have been performing these screenings for our local teenagers with the generous help of Gavin’s Got Heart and I am so pleased that we have helped so many of our kids learn how to stay healthy throughout their lives,” said Barry Goldberg, MD, chief of pediatric cardiology at Southside Hospital and the creator of the BEAT program. “Teenagers who find out now that they may have heart disease risk factors can do so much to take steps to lead a healthier life.” Teenagers who attend the free screening with a guardian’s permission do not need a physician referral and all medical results will be shared with the child’s personal physician and remain confidential. To get the best results for the blood glucose and other tests, students are encouraged not to eat prior to the exam and will be provided breakfast after their tests. Eagle Scout Service Project Helps Raise Awareness On August 4, 2019 Nathaniel P. of Troop 43 in Bay Shore NY (chartered by AMVETS Post 76) completed his Eagle Scout Service Project by planning, organizing and leading the Nicholas A Smith Memorial Walk, to raise awareness and financial support for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to fight suicide. The walk was held at the Bay Shore High School’s main track. Nathaniel P. has been a student in the Bay Shore school district since he started pre-school in 2006, and is currently a senior and IB Candidate Student at Bay Shore High School. He has been involved in scouting since Kindergarten when he would tag along with his older brother until he was old enough to

finally join in first grade when he became a Tiger Scout with Pack 153 of Bay Shore. Besides being close to earning his Eagle Scout rank, Nathaniel is a brotherhood member of scouting’s honor society, the Order of the Arrow. Nathaniel is grateful to all the people and organizations that helped to make this Out of the Darkness Walk a success, including the Bay Shore/ Brightwaters Ambulance crew, The Bay Shore Fire Department, the Suffolk County Police, Senator Phil Boyle’s office and Southside Hospital (all of whom were on site during the walk) providing information and handouts regarding mental health and suicide prevention and other community resources. In addition, many fellow

scouts and families of Troop 43, the Order of the Arrow, students at Bay Shore High School and members of the Bay Shore/Brightwaters community donated their time and effort to assist with the walk. The walk was able to raise an impressive $2,880 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, an agency that promotes suicide awareness, research, and suicide prevention education. Special thanks goes out to Liam of Every Venue Entertainment, who donated his MC/DJ services, and to the Bay Shore School District, specifically the Buildings and Grounds, Athletics Departments, and Security for helping with logistics arranging the use of the track and facilities for this important event.

Raising Funds To Help Breast Cancer Survivors The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, located in Garden City, has received a grant of $25,250 from the LI2Day Walk. Each year, since the event was established in 2004, a team representing the Adelphi program participates in the walk. To date, the program

has received $465,200 to help in their efforts to provide emotional support to people coping with breast cancer. The next walk is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2020. This 10K walk will be held at Sunken Meadow State Park in Smithtown. There is a registration fee of $75 and each walker
