LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. There were nearly 115 representatives from colleges all over the country, local labor unions and the military. Nearly 400 Bay Shore High School students attended the event. Project Description: The Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR), an office of HCR’s HTFC, is responsible for the direct administration of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program in New York State. GOSR proposes to provide $1,122,706.00 in CDBG-DR funding to the Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, the subrecipient, for the Fire Island National Seashore – Burma Road Improvement Project (the “Proposed Activity”), which will improve the aggregate surface of Burma Road between the Fire Island National Seashore Lighthouse Checkpoint and Kimset, Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York. The length of road that will be improved by the Proposed Activity is approximately 0.57 miles. Burma Road is the only east-west road between the Lighthouse Checkpoint and Kimset, a vital access route for emergency vehicles. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy substantially damaged Burma Road. Since then, minor repairs have helped keep the road in passable condition, but longerlasting road improvement is needed. This Proposed Activity will strengthen the road bed with hard packed sand and an aggregate of sand and stone, established at an elevation and alignment that will resist flooding and erosion in the future. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood. The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization aimed at advocating patriotism across the country. Its members are all activeduty veterans who have served between Dec. 7, 1941 and today. “Someone once said that you make a living by what you get, and you make a life by what you give,” said Joe Bertagni, a senior project control engineer with PSEG Long Island’s Transmission and Distribution organization, who lives in Bay Shore. “I’m honored to give back to our veterans through this community service project supported by my employer.” PSEG Long Island is doing six other community service activities for veterans this week. “Supporting our communities is a huge part of PSEG Long Island’s employee culture,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president

and COO of PSEG Long Island. “We are also proud to employ many veterans of our armed forces. During this time of year, when the nation recognizes the sacrifice of the men and women who have served our country, we felt it was especially important to devote our community service to improving veterans’ lives.” PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. PSEG Honors Veterans PSEG Long Island is celebrating veterans throughout the week of Veterans Day by improving the homes and facilities of men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces, including doing construction, improvement and making efficiency upgrades at the American Legion Post #1082 in East Meadow. The theme of the week of service is “Vets Helping Vets.” Today a group of PSEG Long Island employees, which included military veterans, removed trash, debris and old furniture, painted, pulled out old carpet and laid new carpet, installed new energy efficient LED lighting and renovated the space on the second floor. Additional work was performed at the building last week, including upgrading outdoor lighting to energyefficient LEDs, clearing out debris and staining a large deck.
