Fall Festival Fun for All

ith Halloween right around the corner, the Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) helped families get into the holiday spirit at its firstever Fall Festival. Kids and parents painted pumpkins, had their faces painted, played ring toss and decorated cupcakes while enjoying pizza and hot dogs. Attendees of all ages put on their Halloween costumes and had a blast taking pictures in the photo booth.

Cross Country Showdown

CREATING A ROADMAP - Do you know how to create a clear and concise procedure list? Students on Team 61 at Bay Shore Middle School recently learned how to create procedure lists for STEM projects that can be followed by their classmates. After the students switched lists and attempted to recreate their friends’ structures, they provided valuable feedback on how the procedure lists can be improved.

On October 24th, Gardiners Park was the site of the annual cross country showdown between Gardiner Manor School and South Country School. Fourth and fifth graders from both schools

ran an 800m or 1000m course and were cheered on by classmates, teachers and parents. Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the races! Thank you to all of the

teachers and coaches who organized the event, the Varsity and JV Cross Country teams for assisting the younger runners and the community members who cheered the students on!

November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

As part of the Class of 1966’s 50th Class Reunion in June 2016, returning alumni helped to raise money to give back to future Bay Shore graduates. Each year, the Bay Shore High School Alumni Association encourages graduating students to stay involved in the community and to help others when they can. CELEBRATING HERITAGE - The students at Fifth Avenue School celebrated Hispanic Heritage Day with a bang! On October 18th, a program was held that exposed students to a myriad of information about Hispanic culture. Title Winners TRIP TO THE FARM - The first graders at Brook Avenue School enjoyed a fun-filled day of learning and hands-on experiences while visiting the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank. Each child had the opportunity to learn about a variety of farm animals and the special roles that they play, as well as take a wagon ride and engage in a “Fleece and Fiber” workshop.

BOOK REVIEW - Reviews of books can be helpful in deciding whether or not you want to read it next! Students on Teams 62, 64 and 86 at Bay Shore Middle School recently completed their own book reviews. The students drafted, revised and edited their reviews. They also worked with their classmates to provide peer feedback of the reviews.

On Sunday, October 30th, the St. John the Baptist Boys Varsity Cross Country Team won the title at the CHSSA Cross Country League Championships scoring 43 points under the direction of Coach David Wood at Sunken Meadow State

Park. This is the first time since 1971 (45 years) that the St. John the Baptist Boys Varsity Cross Country Team took the CHSAA title. Placing first in the race was Bay Shore resident, junior Patrick Kain. The dedicated and skilled
