LEGISLATOR FLOTTERON HONORS BAY SHORE EAGLE SCOUT - Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Nathaniel Joseph Polk of Troop 43 in Bay Shore for earning his Eagle Scout Honors. Nathaniel demonstrated leadership with his Eagle Scout Project by planning, organizing and leading the Nicholas A. Smith Memorial Walk to raise awareness for Suicide Prevention and raising nearly $3,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He looked up to Nicholas as a mentor, and as the kind of person he wanted to become. This walk was his way of remembering Nicholas and all he meant to him as he went through the ranks of scouting.

AMVETS 76 CEREMONY RETIRING AMERICAN FLAG - It is considered disrespectful to throw away the American Flag and a tradition of properly retiring the American Flag began in 1923 with a ceremonial burning. Amvets Post 76 is one of the organizations that collect flags that are no longer serviceable or fit for display. After the burning takes place, a salute to these flags along with the Pledge of Allegiance follows. TWILA EARNS THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT - Congratulations to Twila, who with the support of her immediate family and her BSA Scouting / AMVETS Post 76 ( T43 & T430) family completed the requirements to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Twila was a founding member of Troop 43G/430 and has the distinction of being the first female scout to earn the rank of Eagle in the Sagtikos District of the BSA. Girl Scout Silver Award Candidate

Kiersten Galli is a Keep Islip Clean volunteer on a mission. She has done an impressive amount of volunteer work to earn a Girl Scout Silver Award and her community is the better for it. Through a linked series of projects, Kiersten showed her commitment to a clean environment, as she completed recycling, education and litter cleanup activities, mainly in her home town of Islip Terrace. An ambitious recycling project involved collecting and redeeming 2809 cans/ bottles, in just two weeks. This work resulted in a much needed donation to KIC of 1126 garbage bags and 1572 disposable gloves. She bought these supplies with $350 earned through recycling, several donations and a $50 coupon from Home Depot in Central Islip. In addition to her recycling work, Kiersten created a brochure packed with information about

litter, recycling and KIC. She presented this information to fellow Girl Scouts, and KIC will use the brochure for educational outreach. Participating in numerous litter cleanups added the final touch to her good work. “Kiersten is a remarkable

young lady,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “She gave a tremendous amount of time and effort to improve her community and benefit a local not-for-profit organization. I’m grateful for her good deeds.”
