Long Island, home to the largest Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement in the United States, again will host two powerful Making Strides walks on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Jones Beach State Park and Saturday, October 30, 2021 on Main Street in Riverhead, providing reimagined and new ways to support and fund the future of breast cancer research and programs. Both events will be held in accordance with CDC and NY State guidelines to ensure the safety of all attendees. Last year’s walk became virtual events due to the pandemic. In 2019, an estimated 65,000 participants joined the effort raising more than $2.5 million. Three months and six food drives yielded 10,106 pounds of food and supplies, plus nearly $2,200 in cash donations, and online donations totaling more than $4,000. Representatives from Island Harvest Food Bank, small business owners, community volunteers and Girl Scouts who contributed to the initiative, the company announced the results of its Power to Feed Long Island initiative at the food bank’s Melville warehouse. “We are proud that our community came out to support each other and fight hunger through our Power to Feed Long Island food drives,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island, and Island Harvest Food Bank board member. “We set a lofty goal in July, and Long Islanders showed up in force with shopping carts and trunks full of food and supplies to meet the challenge. It is also a time when children out of school are not receiving daily free or

reduced-cost breakfast and lunch, which puts a heavier burden on their families. “Stop & Shop is proud to continue its committed support of the efforts of Island Harvest to address food insecurity across Nassau and Suffolk counties,” said Stefanie Shuman, community relations manager, Stop & Shop. “Power to Feed Long Island allowed our customers to take part in food drives held at Stop & Shop stores and help their neighbors in need. It’s important that we all come together during these very difficult times,” she added. Save the Great South Bay, a local 501(c)3 environmental nonprofit, recently teamed up with the Town of Babylon’s Department of Environmental Control installing a unique Bandalong Bandit Litter Trap along the Carll’s River to passively capture floating litter and debris before it flows into the Bay. The litter trap was donated by Gerogia-based Stormwater Systems after outreach by organization member Walt Meshenberg. The trap passively collects floatables 24/7/365 using only the natural current. It also features a patented tidal gate which prevents trash from exiting the trap without netting or fencing making it safe for all aquatic wildlife. Eric Hewlett of Stormwater Systems who was on hand to help out with the install said it was true to form with other installs he has done around the country. “This is another stormwater strategy for collecting floatables in our watershed system,

protecting our creeks which all lead to the Great South Bay. The problem really is littering”, says Rich Groh, Chief Environmental Analyst for the Town. Save the Great South Bay Creek Defender Todd Shaw, who oversees the Carll’s River, and Janet Marie Soley, Debris Data Collection Specialist, will monitor the station to identify the types and amount of trash collected. The data will be entered into the Ocean Conservancy’s international database via the Clean Swell app for use in policy making decisions. The trap will be maintained with support from the Town’s Department of Public Works who will help empty the device on a regular basis. “Our municipal partners in the Town of Babylon are to be commended for their commitment to protecting the Great South Bay,” said Executive Director Robyn Silvestri. “Every piece of trash picked up is one less piece entering the Bay.” To see photos

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most signiﬁcantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This non-proﬁt is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Free Transportation Through ‘Ride United’ To And From Covid-19 Vaccine Appointments United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for

individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account.

have served. “I had to deal with people’s expectations about Americans looking a certain way. About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, Mexican-American Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For

instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively, instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key

stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language.
