Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined Senator Tom Croci and other elected officials at a press conference where Senator Croci announced plans to construct a Navy SEAL Museum and United States Naval Sea Cadet Training Facility. The Museum will be named after Suffolk County’s iconic national war hero, Lt. Michael P. Murphy. Also during the press conference, Senator Croci
announced a $400,000.00 State grant he secured for Suffolk County that has been earmarked specifically for the Museum. Funding for the construction, maintenance and operation of the Museum will be the responsibility of the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Foundation. Signs Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often
do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times
before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

its inaugural event in 1969. This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament, many of whom golfed together in teams. The consequent cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent auction was attended by 180 guests. Participants in the daylong golf outing partook in a variety of “Food Feastivals,” for which the event is named. Italian “Feastival Stands” lined the course with options such as meatballs and clams, pasta and wine, sausage and peppers, an Italian kitchen and Gourmet Deli, a specialty oyster bar, Zeppolas and Cannolis, gourmet pizza and craft beer. In addition, there were contests for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin” on every hole. Brown’s Automotive Group also sponsored a “Hit the Green” challenge on every par 3, a putting contest on the 19th hole and a hole-in-one prize car. This year’s honorees are the partners of the law firm Rizzi, Schwarz and Tarakas, LLP, who have been continual supporters of the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival. Event founder Buddy Fuoco and the firm’s founding partner, Vitro Rizzi, were close friends for several years. After Rizzi’s passing, his colleagues and surviving firm partners, Robert Schwarz, Janice Taraskas and Helen Butera, have continued his legacy of providing a steadfast commitment to community and volunteerism. The Fuoco family’s longstanding connection with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck began with event cochairman Steve Fuoco’s

Fire Prevention Week The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait – check the date!” - the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, October 9th through 15th - promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years. “Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly”, said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski. President Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms. Statistics show that three out of five U.S.
home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working alarms. Homes with battery-disabled smoke alarms or alarms that have outlasted their full functionality put people at increased risk in the event of a home fire. Beginning January 1st, 2017 in New York State, the sale of smokedetecting devices powered by removable, replaceable batteries will be prohibited. Instead, retailers will be able to sell only smokedetecting devices with a power source that isn’t removable and lasts at least a decade. Increased availability of extendedlife batteries and new tamper-resistant smoke detectors is expected to help individuals and families better protect themselves and their loved ones. Existing devices already in
homes will be allowed to remain there until they stop functioning, and smoke detectors with replaceable batteries will continue to be on sale in the state throughout 2016. New York State law requires that all homes and businesses must have working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors with a 10-year lifespan are already on the market; most are powered by lithium batteries, not a traditional 9-volt. FASNY, along with the approximately 110,000 volunteer firefighters in New York State and safety advocates nationwide are joining forces during Fire Prevention Week, to remind residents to take the following precautions: Smoke alarms: replace every 10 years. · A smoke alarm’s age can be determined
by looking on the back or side of the smoke alarm, where the date of manufacture can be found. · Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase or installation). Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old - or sooner if they don’t respond properly.
Batteries: test monthly, replace yearly · Smoke alarms should be tested monthly, and batteries should be replaced when they begin to chirp, signaling that they’re running low. Two-thirds of fire deaths occur in homes with no, or non-functioning, smoke alarms · Have at least one
smoke alarm on every floor, including the basement and in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. · Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.
