The style of beer most widely consumed during Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced to a time before refrigeration was available. According to the online beer resource BeerAdvocate.com, brewing beer in the summertime was nearly impossible in the days before refrigeration. Hot weather and the risk of bacterial infections complicated brewing in summer, so

many brewers would cease brewing beer in spring and begin again in the fall when temperatures dropped. As a result, the beers available for Oktoberfest celebrations were the Märzen style of beer, or those brewed in the month of March, shortly before brewing ceased for the season. These Märzen beers were kept in cold storage throughout the spring and summer or brewed at a higher gravity

so they would keep and be available for consumption during Oktoberfest celebrations. Such brewing restrictions were no longer necessary after refrigeration became commonplace and made it possible to brew beer year-round, but there’s still a strong chance that steins being hoisted during this year’s Oktoberfest celebrations will be filled with Märzen-style beers.

Oktoberfest Celebrations

Indigenous People’s Day Celebration The Nea Big Read Long Island Program Kicks Off On October 11 Teatro Yerbabruja will kick off its 7-month NEA BIG READ LONG ISLAND Project on Monday October 11, starting at 1 PM, at its home in the historic Second Avenue Firehouse, 17 Second Avenue, in downtown Bay Shore. The National Endowment for the Arts awarded a NEA BIG READ grant to Teatro Yerbabruja, one of 61 such grants awarded nationally and the only one awarded for a Long Island project. The NEA BIG READ grant supports a Long Island communities reading program that focuses on the book selected from among the five offered by NEA. Teatro Yerbabruja’s NEA BIG READ LONG ISLAND will focus on An American Sunrise, a collection of poems by Joy Harjo, the current, and first, indigenous United States Poet Laureate. Ms.

Harjo is a member of the Creek/Muscogee Nation, and will do a day-long residency on April 8, 2022 as part of the program. NEA BIG READ LONG ISLAND will include dozens of free events throughout Suffolk County, at public libraries, cultural and community organizations, including in Long Island’s Shinnecock and Montaukett Nations. Those events range from a reading and discussion of Ms. Harjo’s An American Sunrise to readings and discussions of her and other authors’ related works targeted at adult and younger audiences, as well as themerelated visual art exhibits and the various performing arts. Ms. Harjo will be the keynote speaker at Bay Shore High School’s Ethnic Pen Conference on April 8 and will

give a public reading on the Shinnecock Reservation that evening. “We are an organization that envisions its many visual and performing arts events as a means of achieving constructive social and economic change in the heavily Latino-populated Long Island communities that we generally serve, and it would have been easy simply to choose the offered book by a Latina author,” said Margarita Espada, Teatro Yerbabruja’s Founder and ExecutiveArtistic Director. “But it was clear that we had to accept the challenge of focusing on a different marginalized population of color, so that interested Long Islanders could better explore the similarities and differences between and within those populations.”

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or cannot find rental units quickly enough in a high cost and low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. While many of us could never imagine being homeless for even a single night, for both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months on average,

while some remain homeless in shelters for several years before securing permanent housing. LICH has expanded their services. These services include street outreach, housing navigation, system data management and outcomes tracking. All of those are part of what has become known as the local “Coordinated Entry System”. Coordinated Entry is a personcentered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services, while prioritizing those who have been homeless the longest and those who are the most in need of housing and support. In 2020, LICH assisted over 3,000 Long Islanders with food and toiletries and connected approximately 200 households to permanent housing. Next month from November 14-November 21 it will be Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, let’s join together and help those in need. There are many ways you can receive help from, donate to or volunteer with this non-profit. Keep an eye out for next week’s article for more information on that. Until then, visit www.addressthehomeless.org or contact Greta Guarton, the Executive Director of LICH at gguarton@ addressthehomeless.org or 631-4644313 x 113 if you are looking for more information.

If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellestanuch@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

Five Towns College Celebrates The 46th/47th Commencement Exercises in Person

The Board of Trustees, Faculty, and Staff are thrilled to announce the live and in person celebration of the Class of 2020 and the Class on 2021 graduates at the esteemed Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts on Saturday, October 9 at 9:00 a.m. Five Towns College President David Cohen shared, “We wanted to give these graduates the ceremony they deserved and show them and their families just how proud we are of all they have accomplished here at the College.” These graduates expressed a desire for a real, in-person graduation not a virtual event. The pandemic was long and disruptive. This Commencement celebration celebrates them in the grand style that they deserve. To accommodate both Classes impacted by the pandemic, the College selected The Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts, a beautiful beaux arts theatre. The architectural and ornate interior is the perfect backdrop to celebrate not just our students’ academic accomplishments, but represents a shared optimism for the future and the return to normal for all. The ceremony will include performances by the Five Towns College Chamber Singers and Choir as well as by members of the Theatre Arts Division. Two honorary doctorate degrees will be presented to individuals who are major forces in the entertainment and music industries. At this event, Five Towns College will bestow an Honorary Doctor of Music (Mus.D.) upon musician Victor Wooten. Mr. Wooten is a five time Grammy Award winning Bass Guitarist, who rose to fame as part of the highly acclaimed group Bela Fleck and The

A Multi-Class Regatta Captain Rick Latorre and his crew aboard Dark Star won line honors and came in first place in the Spinnaker Division. Eric Winberry and crew aboard Aleboat came in second place. The Non Spinning Division was won by a great sailing performance by Gary Sebouhian and his crew aboard S/V Pandemonium. Second place boat was Merry Ann and crew followed by Ed Anderson’s boat At Last. The Cruising Division was won by Chris Demmarco who sailed single handedly and was the only boat in his division to complete the race in such light wind. The Multi hull boats were sailing all over the racecourse looking for wind and was won by

Kim Schaefer and his crew on the Trimaran Trillium. Their competition was close behind aboard the Trimaran Getting There. There were a total of 15 boats racing in the four classes. The action was beautifully captured by Mike Busch of Great South Bay Images and Rich Labella of RJ Labella Photography and is available to view at www. greatsouthbay.org. Then The Celebration…. The Soirée Directly following the Regatta and set to a stunning background with views to the Robert Moses Bridge, this year’s celebration was presented by York Analytical Laboratories at the Long Island Yacht Club. Celebrants were treated to live music by the ever-popular No Request Band along with tasty seafood delights served up by Bill and Maureen Zeller of Captree Clam. Under beautiful blue skies, Chuck Westfall of Thatch Island Oysters shucked hundreds of fresh Great South Bay oysters and guests dined on tasty treats from Coastal Kitchen, Mary Carroll’s, Ristorante Gemelli, Village Meat Market and Southside Fish and Clam. As they raised funds to support the organization’s three core programs, guests enjoyed an exclusive tasting of beautifully aged armagnacs and cognac with local importer Larry Reiter of Columbus Wine and Spirits. Others had their fortunes told by the Collective Consciousness of Oakdale. The Yacht Club’s grounds were decorated with a wide selection of native trees,

bushes and plants donated by Long Island Natives. The plants were repurposed to build a native garden in Amityville’s Nautical Park after the event. Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta was dedicated in memory of former Babylon Village Mayor Ralph A. Scordino who sadly passed away in October 2020. Mayor Scordino was a longtime supporter of the Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta and an avid supporter of Save The Great South Bay, 501(c)3. Current Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams spoke of her predecessor’s love of the Bay and commitment to the environment. Congratulations to grand prize winner Jay Price who won the 9’ 6” Paddleboard donated by Karen Marvin of South Shore Paddle Board. Save The Great South Bay is grateful to event supporters Blue Point Brewing and the Lessing’s Hospitality Group along with South Shore Paddle Board and Spadefoot Design and Construction. Support The Movement - If you missed this year’s celebration, you can still help. Go to www. savethegreatsouthbay.org to learn more about their programs and donate to support their work. SOUTH BAY SHORE - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 6, 2021 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta & Soirée took place on Saturday, September 18 on the Great South Bay followed immediately by what is quickly becoming an annual favorite celebration at the Long Island Yacht Club benefiting local environmental non-profit Save The Great South Bay. One of the largest sailboat races on the Great South Bay, the Mayor’s Cup is organized by the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association in association with the South Bay Cruising Club. Returning Race Committee Chair John Davis oversaw the 7.8 nautical mile course which proved a tough battle for the skippers and their crews. The light and variable winds, that changed direction multiple times throughout the race, made for very difficult conditions to keep the boats sailing.

Operation Splash Makes Waves For Long Island’s South Shores The low-cost solution to waterfront pollution Operation SPLASH is a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 with the goal of cleaning up and preserving Long Island’s south shore bays, beaches, and salt marshes. Since then, the organization has grown from one caring person to several thousand members across seven chapters dotted along Long Island’s South Shore. SPLASH’s seven cleanup boats run from March through November and are fully operated by volunteer captains and crew members. Over the past three decades, volunteers have retrieved more than 3,000,000 pounds of litter, marine debris, and navigational hazards from the south shore. Most of what is pulled from the water comes from land-based sources — through storm drains and from storms blowing debris into the water. In efforts to reduce the impact of storm drain-sourced marine debris, Operation SPLASH designed and currently maintains the Mill Basin Debris Trap and advocated for other environmental legislation in New York State. Beyond collecting marine debris, Operation SPLASH has also made tremendous headway in stemming the awful tide of sewage being dumped in our bays and the toxic pollution entering our waters through stormwater runoff. SPLASH crews actively monitor and identify pollutants, as well as their sources. To reduce the flow of toxins and trash into the bays, SPLASH has collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm

drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation SPLASH also offers STEM-based education programs to educate students throughout Nassau County about the importance of Long Island’s south shore bays and the challenges that they face. Students from elementary school through college have the opportunity to learn through hands-on programming that goes beyond the classroom to include boat tours and local excursions. With the leadership of talented and environmentally passionate marine tradespeople, educators and business owners, Operation SPLASH has remained focused on its mission and produces extraordinary results. SPLASH volunteers work hard to protect and preserve the South Shore bays and salt marshes, along with the wildlife, fish, and fowl that call them home. The ultimate goal is to maintain these precious ecosystems through cleanup and outreach efforts for future Long Islanders to respectfully enjoy for generations to come. Operation SPLASH depends on volunteers and donations to crew and maintain each of the seven patrol boats, and actively welcomes new members both during the cleanup season and beyond. Visit operationsplash.org to become a member or donate today!
