Get Ahead of Chimney Repair This Season

• Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps, states Vertical Chimney Care. • Conduct a visual inspection of the chimney to check for any cracks or spalling. Spalling is the wearing

Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. available now to support families that need it most.” Weik joined in supporting a measure proposed by Republican Senators to double the existing state tax credit to help families pay child care costs. In the Senate, Weik said she would cosponsor the bill, and seek to extend it so that the credit is available to more middle class families. The proposal would

be funded through $70 million in federal assistance the state has already received for child care expenses. Only about $1 million of that funding has been spent so far. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip.

As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. To further advance the quality, state-of-the-art care provided at Southside Hospital, Linda and John Bohlsen have donated $5 million to create the Linda and John Bohlsen Neurosciences Center. Included within the center is the new Linda and John Bohlsen Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The new unit is managed by neurointensivist physicians who are fellowship-trained in neurocritical care. With specialized equipment and intensive bedside care tailored to the unique needs of the neuroscience patient, neuroscience ICUs have been associated with shorter lengths of stay and better outcomes in comparison to general ICUs. These additional services at Southside Hospital provide a higher level of care for patients with complicated conditions such as stroke, neurotrauma, brain tumors, seizures and brain bleeds. Southside’s neurosurgery department is led by Chair David J. Chalif, MD, a renowned neurosurgeon who came to the hospital last year from North Shore University Hospital with 34 years of neurosurgical experience.
