Over 50 Fair In mid-September, the Over 50 Fair will once again offer Long Islanders an opportunity to meet with businesses and nonprofits who have terrific products and services geared towards adults age 50+ and their adult children. The Over 50 Fair, in its eighth year, is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event,

on Sunday, September 17th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Long Island Hilton/Huntington, its new easier location, will have over 80 exhibitors and over 30 speakers including television reality favorites. Kimberly Sherbach of Wantagh was one of the bachelorettes on the 19th edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series, “The Bachelor,” in 2015.

She will be discussing what it was like to be on the TV show and do a “Q & A.” In addition, Kimberly will be teaching a yoga class. Chef Maria Petridis was crowned a “Chopped Champion” on Food Network’s Chopped in December. Maria, of Maria’s Mediterranean Seafood & Grill in Bayside, will be doing a Greek cooking demo that is sure

country line dancing class, and a dance performance by the Seasoned Steppers, a group of women who are age 66+ and are former Ms. New York Senior America pageant contestants. Grants Awarded NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts (SNT) that can make dramatic improvements to the lives of people with disabilities while enabling individuals to maintain eligibility for public benefits programs, such as Medicaid and SSI. For 2017, NYSARC Trust

Services is proud to fulfill its commitment to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by awarding a total of $2,793,500 in grants to NYSARC Chapters statewide. This year, AHRC Suffolk received $110,500 to provide guardianship services for people with intellectual

The Long Island Nets and the United Way of Long Island recently held a Sort-a-Thon event at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in partnership with Target as part of the 2017 Annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign. The Sort-A-Thon featured more than 75 volunteers including Senator Elanie Phillips and Senator Kemp Hannon, along with members of their respective staffs,

Target employees, representatives of the Long Island Nets and members of Union 338. Volunteers sorted thousands of school supplies to be donated to the Uniondale School District to benefit students in need for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. The school supplies included backpacks, binders, colored pencils, notebooks, glue sticks and other useful tools that have been collected from more

than 25 drop-off locations throughout Long Island. Over the past eight years, United Way of Long Island’s Stuff-A-Bus program has provided hundreds of thousands of school supplies to Long Island students. 2017 is the first time that Stuff-ABus will be held in Nassau County. Supported by Chapter staff and community volunteers, AHRC Suffolk’s Guardianship Program currently provides guardianship supports and services to 19 people and is ready to assist 25 more as a Standby or Alternate

Standby guardian. NYSARC Trust Services also awarded AHRC Suffolk $15,000 to develop new recreational opportunities to enrich the lives of the more than 2,500 members it serves. AHRC Suffolk plans to use the recreation grant funds for their Saturday Recreation Program. This grant enables the individuals to enjoy community outings

Transformation Challenge Billy Hofacker, Farmingdale and Babylon personal trainer & weight loss expert, is kicking off the “Fall Back to Fitness” 10 (Pounds) – 4 (Weeks) Transformation Challenge on September 17th. “We wanted to do something different for this transformation challenge to make a greater impact,” says Hofacker. “Our team at Total Body Boot Camp and Performance Center decided to support a greater cause. Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

As was true here with Sandy, it is amazing how people, organizations and companies have helped by volunteering their time, energy, resources and money. The outpouring of compassion has been, and continues to be, amazing. It reminds us all that, even during this

Donation Drive Announced Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that Suffolk County has joined with the American Red Cross of Long Island to create an online donation platform for all residents to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey. All donations will go directly to support emergency response efforts as well as for those still grappling with the devastation and
