ay Shore’s Brook Avenue School will be able to purchase new playground equipment next year thanks to involved parent Mrs. Nadja Forbes. Recently, Mrs. Forbes submitted grant proposals that secured $8,000 for Brook Avenue School, awarded by the Tanger Outlets ($1,000) and the Lowe’s Charitable Foundation ($7,000). Earlier in the year, Mrs. Forbes procured $750 from a Walmart grant as well.

Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time. For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you. And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never
worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch. The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems. But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes. I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You
didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag? I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint. Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask. If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything? Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

Volunteers Needed If you have a few hours a month to spare, the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island, A Division of EPIC Long Island is looking for you. Won’t you help us dispel some of the myths and misconceptions that still surround epilepsy? Help us make the world a better place for people with epilepsy who are often discriminated against for no reason. Volunteers are needed to perform a puppet show in area elementary schools. We use the” Kids on the Block” puppets, a troupe of life-size able and disabled puppets. If you have one hour a week for four to six weeks for training and can commit to one performance a month, we will train you in the art of Bunraku, or Japanese Puppetry. This is an opportunity to have fun working with children while promoting an atmosphere of kindness and tolerance in our community. My Voice, My Vote On May 21st, students across the Bay Shore School District participated in the 1st Annual My Voice, My Vote Social Studies program, casting their ballots to vote on various school-related topics ranging from school lunch to end-of-year school spirit activities. Voter turnout was impressively high, as an
estimated 700 students from the elementary level, approximately 300 from the middle school, and more than 400 from the high school turned out to participate in the civics activity. Mr. Joseph Lemke, Director of Social Studies, described the event as a great success due in large part to the collaboration of administrators, teachers
and students in helping to organize and execute the program. Mr. Lemke said, “This was a valuable opportunity for students to recognize the real world applications of Social Studies. Excitingly, the turnout in our Bay Shore student vote rivaled that of many local, state, and national elections!”

A memorial service was held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside on May 24th to honor 64 of Suffolk’s Correction Officers and Deputy Sheriffs who died in service since 1887. The Annual Memorial Service was hosted by the Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association and the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs P.B.A. It was attended by families of the deceased, law enforcement officers, county officials and civilian personnel. Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota was the master of ceremonies. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco gave the Memorial Address.

QUILTERS CLUB - The Bay Shore Historical Society hosted members of the Great South Bay Quilters Guild at its May monthly meeting held at the Bay ShoreBrightwaters Library. The quilters displayed over fifty quilts of various designs and sizes while describing the art and history of quilting. Guild members spoke of the intricacy of design as well as the details of preparation and production of the finely crafted fabric hangings and coverings. The Guild members explained the history of various designs such as the Underground Railroad Quilt as well as the Guild’s community service project that has produced hundreds of quilts for the Veterans’ Hospital in Northport.
