The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks. com, when you enter the charity code FGWIBCC20. Even one can of tuna can make all the difference as to whether a child goes to bed hungry or not. “We want to get the message across that the church isn’t about four walls,” said Father Richard E. New York Blood Center Encourages Blood Donors To Schedule Appointments

New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of

making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “We’ve always relied on the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.” NYBC began hosting a limited number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more

PSEG Long Island is expanding its claims policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that customers whose electrical service was interrupted by Tropical Storm Isaias for at least 72 hours can be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. The tropical storm knocked out power for more than 420,000 customers on Long Island and in the Rockaways, making it the

most destructive storm since Superstorm Sandy. “We recognize that losing power in August, together with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was a hardship for many of our customers,” PSEG Long Island President and COO Daniel Eichhorn said. “Given the unique combination of circumstances, we believe the right thing to do is to expand our claims process

to ease the burden on the customers most impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias.” PSEG Long Island will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4, and Aug. 12, 2020 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. For residential customers,

food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items). Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications

that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration. Customers must provide an itemized list of the medications and proof of loss (for example: pharmacy prescription label or pharmacy receipt identifying the medicine). Commercial customers applying for reimbursement must supply an itemized list of spoiled food and proof of loss (invoices, inventory lists, bank statements).

PSEG Long Island to Reimburse Customers for Food and Medicines Customers can apply for reimbursement at www. psegliny.com/claims. The reimbursement claims cannot be processed over the phone. Customers will have until Sept. 16, 2020 to file claims. Reimbursement is expected to take up to 60 business days from when a proper claim form is completed and submitted to PSEG Long Island.

Former NYS Chief Justice Sol Wachtler Discusses “Law as It Impacts the Citizen” at LIMBA LIMBA (Long Island Metro Business Action) has announced that Sol Wachtler, former Chief Justice of the state of New York, will be the guest speaker at the business networking group’s next virtual meeting on September 4. (This event is rescheduled from August 7). Mr. Wachter will discuss the topic “Law as It Impacts the Citizen.” Mr. Wachtler served in the Korean War, where he was in charge of the Provost Marshal General Center Military Police Courts and Boards. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he opened his own law practice, where one of his associates was Frank X. Altimari, who

later went on to become U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit. He began his political career in 1963 when he was elected Councilman of the Town of Hempstead. Two years later, he was elected Town Supervisor. In 1968, he was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court and, in 1972, at the age of 42, became the youngest judge elected to the NYS Court of Appeals. In 1985, he was appointed Chief Judge of the state of New York and the Court of Appeals, both positions he held until 1993. Mr. Wachtler was also the Founder and First Chair of both New York’s State Federal Judicial Council and the

National State Federal Judicial Council. He also chaired the Committee on Public Safety for the Nassau County Board of Supervisors. He currently serves as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law and the First Amendment at the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Central Islip. He graduated from Washington and Lee University where he received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws.
