he Bay Shore Historical Society recently hosted its Open House/ Bake Sale. The Gibson-MackHolt House, which houses the Bay Shore Historical Society, is located at 22 Maple Avenue. It is an historical house that was constructed in 1820 and remains one of the oldest tradesman’s houses in Bay Shore. The sale featured gifts and homemade goodies for all to enjoy. Islip Supervisor Tom Croci and the Islip Town Board honored Eva Casale of Glen Cove for her outstanding fundraising efforts at the August 5th Town Board Meeting. Eva is a dedicated marathon runner who recently ran seven marathons in seven consecutive days in effort to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She is a member of the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training and has been trained to compete in endurance events while the organization, in return, raises funds for cancer research. She has raised $27,000 to date and continues her efforts. One of the seven marathons Eva ran was dedicated to a Team in Training member and local contractor from Bay Shore, Rich Arcuri, who passed away in June after a work-
related accident. The last leg of the race passed his home in Bay Shore, where balloons were released as the runners passed the house in his memory and honor. “Eva is truly an inspiration to our community and is a perfect reminder to always help those in need and to always remember our fallen,” said Supervisor Croci.

It’s that special time of year again – well, special to me – three days until my birthday, the so-called “reset button” that comes around once every 365 days to remind me that, yes, I am one entire year older and (hopefully) just a little wiser. Some people seem to dread such milestones, seeing them as unnecessary celebrations, just another day on the calendar to cast aside. Of course, there are also those who feel the occasion should be acknowledged as some sort of national holiday… Me, I
fall somewhere in between. It’s certainly nice to receive phone calls and text messages and Facebook greetings from those you seldom talk to otherwise, as well as to take the time to get together with family and close friends to celebrate. Why not? We spend more than enough of our time going through the motions of the daily grind. We deserve at least that much of a reprieve. As for getting older, age is, truly, nothing but a number. It’s a state of mind, dependent upon the person, the day of the week, the phase of the moon… and, considering I’ve been
mistaken for anywhere from 18 to 25 years old, it must be a characteristic that’s not necessarily apparent to others! We should all take a moment – even if it is, literally, just one moment – each year, on our respective birthdays, to acknowledge the fact that we are each special and important in our own little ways, within our own immediate circles, and that every year is but another opportunity to expand upon that imprint. We are all works in progress. So blow out the candles, make a wish, and celebrate the next step of the journey.

(UCP of Suffolk) will host its 2nd Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show at Oheka Castle in Huntington, NY on Wednesday, September 17th at 12 p.m. This year’s event, cochaired by UCP of Suffolk Board Chair Colleen WestLevy and Board Member Kim Smith, Esq., will kick off with a cocktail reception, followed by a delicious buffet luncheon and the fashion show. Male, female and children models comprised of UCP of Suffolk program participants, family members, and committee and board members will strut down the runway in support of UCP of Suffolk’s

The units, comprised predominantly of suites with four single bedrooms, will each have a living room and two bathrooms. The facilities will be fully air conditioned, with individual thermostatic controls, and will offer high-speed wired and wireless internet access and a range of other amenities, providing a higher standard of oncampus living. The dining portion of the project will replace nearly all food service venues currently located in the Stony Brook Union, allowing for the conversion of the Union to a dedicated
Student Services Center. The range of new dining options that will be offered include multiple dinein and take-out choices, seating for over 800 students, and comfortable gathering places with full wireless internet access, all in state-of-the-art facilities. “With this groundbreaking, we are taking an important step to address the growing housing and dining needs of our students,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “The new facility will offer outstanding oncampus living and dining options; it will help us reduce the density of assignments in other residence halls and ensure
that students seeking on-campus housing are accommodated. We are thrilled to have this project underway and continue to be fully committed to consistently increasing the quality of life for our students.” Combining the dining and residence projects in an integrated site means that the new dining facilities will be close in proximity to the academic mall, the new Stony Brook Arena, the new Recreation Center, the Wang Center, and the nearly 3,000 students who will live in the immediate area. Stony Brook University broke ground recently on Phase I of the new 759-room student housing facilities and 60,000-square-foot dining center located on Toll Drive. Scheduled to be completed by fall 2016, the new development will offer additional residential options for upperclassman, and bring the total oncampus housing inventory to more than 10,300 beds, making Stony Brook University the largest campus housing program in SUNY. (Phase II is anticipated to start construction in December this year.) The new facility on John S. Toll Drive, will feature two modern buildings. Phase I will consist of a
mission to create life without limits for people with disabilities. The models will show off the latest fall clothing from Marshs of Huntington.
