My Little Corner of LI

Much has been written about the expense of living on Long Island, especially for us young-ish folk who have only recently set out on our own, away from the comfy confines of our childhood homes. I know plenty of fellow Lindy friends who have moved across the country upon graduating, precisely for this reason; however, just as many remain in the area, toughing out life on LI. Our mission: to make ends meet so as not to be forced to ﬂee this island oasis that we call home. Sure, you may indeed get more for your money elsewhere; but where else can you be equidistant from the great landmarks of Manhattan and the beautiful beaches of Montauk? A mere vacation getaway for some, we are fortunate to reside here year round, through all four seasons of splendor. In that sense, there

are some perks you simply can’t put a price on. As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. Nearly five years later, my little haven is quite completely furnished, and I have accumulated enough seasonal decor to last a lifetime, maybe two. Closet space… well, that’s another matter entirely. To think I have managed to fill every square inch of available storage in such a short span of time; well, it’s really pretty impressive (said she sheepishly). First item on the autumn “To Do” list: purge those closets, drawers and unreachable shelves of anything unnecessary. Consolidate, donate; whatever it takes to create a little more

breathing room. And stay away from those sales, more importantly, or we’ll be right back in the same boat a few months down the line. Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Teacher Mr. Zaros did the next best thing; he chose Under the Sea-themed music like Octopus’s Garden by the Beatles and Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin to accompany the parade. The parade concluded in the multi-purpose room. Zaros scattered an assortment of instruments such as drums, triangles, and maracas and multicolored ribbons around the room to encourage the students to socialize, move freely, and dance.

Students enrolled in the summer program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Premm Learning Center participated in a variety of Under the Sea-themed activities that increased vocabulary, inspired original poetry, and prompted the production of posters highlighting creatures that inhabit the water such as octopuses, lobsters, sharks, and jellyfish. The curriculum and activities aligned with New York Standards for English, Science, and the Arts. With an Under the Sea theme, teachers had a fun time coming up with puns for the bulletin boards such as, ‘Everything has a porpoise’ and ‘Whale hello there! We are happy to sea you!’ Hats were crafted from construction paper, crayons, magic markers, and plastic googly eyes to resemble lobsters, crabs, and sharks. Movie Thursdays at Premm Learning Center offer more than entertainment for students. The entire exercise simulates the experience of visiting a movie theater, giving students the opportunity to practice good communication skills. Premm is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to students with special needs. Each Thursday afternoon, the school shows two movies and students take turns functioning as ushers, ticket takers, and concession stand operators. When attendees arrive at the “theater,” they use appropriate communication to request the movie of their choice. They receive a movie ticket and fake money to purchase a snack before proceeding to the concession stand. Next, theatregoers give their movie tickets to the ushers before entering the classrooms where the movies are being shown. To communicate, students may verbalize what they want, gesture or use an

The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) Long Island Chapter will host its 19th annual Golf Outing on Monday, September 25th, at the St. George’s Golf & Country Club in East Setauket. The event honoree is James Booth, VP of JBH Environmental. The golf outing will be a fund raising event to benefit the Foundation’s mission, which is to grant children with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses their special

wishes. Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 10:45 a.m. The cocktail hour will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by dinner. The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Marty Lyons’ determination

led to the establishment of the Foundation after experiencing three lifealtering events in March of 1982. These moments forced him to “see the frailty, unfairness and the wonder of life.” With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed the Marty Lyons Foundation in December of 1982. Since then, the organization has worked to keep hope alive in the hearts of thousands of children and provide

support to their families. The Marty Lyons Foundation provides wishes to children aged 3 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed as having terminal or lifethreatening illnesses. MLF is unique in that it will consider granting a second wish to a deserving child who may need the hope and inspiration to face the battle of their lives for the second time around. Since it was established, the Marty Lyons Foundation

has granted 7,300 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. “By playing a fun-filled day of golf or attending the dinner, supporters help provide the Foundation with the much needed resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. Though the outing is limited to 144 golfers, others are welcomed to join the festivities during the cocktail hour and dinner,” said Marty Lyons, Founder

and Chairman of the Marty Lyons Foundation. Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-of-pocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.
