Many of these families suffer from poor nutrition, asthma, musculoskeletal conditions, and a lack of preventive care. All the proceeds from the “Honoring the Hands” event go toward a “Day of Health” for agricultural workers and their families, led by HRHCare, which serves more that 45,000 patients and employs nearly 250 people at its seven facilities on Long Island alone. Everyone you meet is ﬁghting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reflection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

Summer Experience Thirty-six smiling New York City children boarded buses on July 18th, headed for Western Suffolk, to reunite with their host families at the bus arrival in Commack. This summer, close to 4,000 children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through

The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. “I’m excited to go swimming and to watch the stars at night. I can’t see them at night in the city!” explains ten-yearold Tyrone about his Fresh Air experiences. Many volunteer families find their hosting experience so rewarding that over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with the

same host families, year after year. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Thanks to KIC Volunteers, many residents throughout the 18 hamlets of Islip can enjoy a cleaner community and healthier environment along with

their summer fun. KIC participates annually in the Great American Cleanup during the months leading into summer as the local host of this nationwide event sponsored by Keep America Beautiful. Large community-wide cleanups with a few hundred participants, civic groups

with dozens of members or just small groups of friends all added up to nearly 2,000 volunteers removing literally tons of litter and debris from their communities. Add to that another 800 people planting flowers and the result is a beautiful town.

Taking a Swing at Alzheimers

On July 13th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its Fifth Annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. Eighty-nine registered golfers took part in the event, which raised funds for Alzheimer’s disease research and care. Golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge while on the links. After a round of golf, the participants enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win some raffle prizes. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the

last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chaired the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. The event was held in support of the Foundation’s mission to grant special wishes for children with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses. The day began with a special visit from Shaun Carroll, a child from Commack suffering from a debilitating illness. Shaun and his

mother Diane publicly thanked The Marty Lyons Foundation for granting their family a second wish this past May, a trip to Universal Studios in Florida. Shaun’s brother, Kevin, who suffers from the same illness, was granted a wish in 2013 to go to Give Kids the World in Orlando. Another Foundation wish child, Michelle Izzo of Wantagh, and her mother Fortunata attended the awards ceremony during the evening reception, where they received special recognition. Michelle,

Star Island Yacht Club will host the 23rd Annual Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament, starting with the Captain’s Meeting on Thursday, August 20th at 7:30 p.m. Fishing begins August 21st at 6 a.m. and ends August 22nd at 5 p.m. With overnight fishing now available and more chances to win, this is a tournament the competitive sport fisherman does not want to miss. Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest Makos and Threshers, and new this year, any species of Tuna, including Blue Fin. In addition, The Star Island Yacht Club is increasing the number of prize categories to include the Tuna category. Participants may only weigh in one shark per day, but may weigh in as many tuna of any species, including Blue Fin, provided that National Marine Fisheries regulations are followed. For the first time, anglers may fish overnight. This is

in response to participants in the past who would have liked to stay out overnight, in the event they didn’t have fish to weigh in for the first day, or if they weighed in earlier and wanted to get a head start on Day Two. Last year’s competitors took home a combined $145,000 in total prize money, plus custom trophies, with 180 anglers aboard 47 boats competing for top honors. John Lowe aboard Jay Sutphen’s boat “Janusz” hauled in the Heaviest Thresher of the Tournament, a 224-pounder. Scott Shapiro on Matt Fuller’s “Scott Free” caught the Heaviest Mako of the tournament at 205 pounds. A total of eight Makos and one Thresher were weighed last year. The entry fee is $750 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the

tournament. Dockage is on a firstcome, first-served basis. Transient rates for this tournament will be $5.50 per foot up to 59 feet and $6.00 per foot for 60 feet and up. Utilities (electric, water and cable TV) are $30 for 30-amp and singlecord, 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord, 50-amp service. High-speed fuel pumps are now available at all slips. Dockage for the tournament is a threenight minimum stay. As per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all participants use nonstainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively. Celebrating Summer The Fresh Air Fund’s Western Suffolk and Nassau County Volunteer Committees held a summer get-together on July 20th at Adventureland Amusement Park. Local host families and their Fresh Air children enjoyed a dinner together where they shared their stories and experiences. The families then finished the night off enjoying amusement rides. This summer, close to 4,000 children will enjoy a summer outside of the city with

Shoes for All Shoes For All, the not for profit agency that collects new and gently worn shoes for those in need in our community recently donated 300 pairs of shoes to veterans at the Veterans Stand Down event at the American Legion Post

Preserve Clean-Up Set School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) announces that the Seaford FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Team #92 (the “Sea Lions”) is hosting an environmental cleanup at the Francis T. Purcell Preserve in Hempstead,

New York on Saturday, August 8th, at 8 a.m. The primary habitat for many native plants and animals, this Hempstead plains area once occupied more than 40,000 acres in central Nassau County. Recognizing the years of neglect the preserve has endured, the team members felt it was time

to restore the park to its original grandeur. All Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and Junior FLL teams are welcome to participate in the cleanup. The Francis T. Purcell Preserve is located at 101 James Doolittle Boulevard

in Uniondale, New York, near the Nassau Coliseum and Long Island Marriott. In addition to a call for volunteers, SBPLI is also requesting donations of bottled water, first aid items and garbage bags to help with the cleanup efforts. “This event gives team members the opportunity

to work together and help impact the environment in a positive manner,” says Chris Baker, Coach, Seaford FLL Team #92. “After visiting several local areas, we selected the Francis T. Purcell Preserve for its impact on the natural habitat.” To volunteer for the cleanup, to provide supplies

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone presented the Suffolk Medal for Distinguished Service recently to Dr. Lee Koppelman, whose visionary work as a master planner has influenced Long Island for decades. “So much of what makes our region great can be ascribed to him,” the County Executive said at a hearing of the Suffolk County Legislature’s environmental planning and agriculture committee. “From our county’s vast open spaces to the tens of thousands of jobs located in the Hauppauge Industrial Park and the Route 110 corridor, we have Dr. Koppelman’s vision and leadership to thank. “And like most visionaries, some of his visions were a little ahead of their time,” the County Executive said. “Improved rail transit, improved mass transit, revitalized downtowns, greater diversity in housing stock. These are areas where Dr. Lee Koppelman was an often lonely voice, and now we know, he was 100 percent right.” Dr. Koppelman was Suffolk County’s first planning director, serving from 1960 to 1988 and led the Regional Planning Board for 41 years as executive director.

He long championed the concept of comprehensive studies. planning, the preservation of open space and protection “I think supporting the most recent efforts of the of the coastal wetlands. Planning Department is a no brainer,” Dr. Koppelman He spoke in support of the County Executive’s said. “No county anywhere in the nation has achieved the environmental protection that this county has achieved. The county, in my judgment, is in very good hands, and the future of the county is, in my judgment, an absolutely bright one.” The County Executive described the need for careful planning in current and future projects, citing as examples the Ronkonkoma Hub, a mixed-use transit oriented development at the Ronkonkoma train station, and the Reclaim Our Waters initiative, as part of the foundation for sustainable growth and resiliency in Suffolk County. The County Executive has made water quality his Number One priority. The new master plan also cites the availability of such world-class research Comprehensive Master Plan 2035, entitled a Framework institutions like Stony Brook University, Brookhaven for Our Future, Suffolk County’s first master plan in 45 National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory years. The master plan draws on and unifies five existing as essential to the county’s future.
