Volunteers Needed Individuals who haven’t surfed in years due to spinal cord injuries, that left them paralyzed, will be able to get on to surfboards at Long Beach thanks to an organization called Wheels2Water. Dozens of volunteers are needed to help paralyzed surfers out of their wheelchairs and on to specially designed surfboards. The Wheels2Water event takes place starting at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 19 at Lido
Beach West on Lido Blvd. in Long Beach. It’s about enjoying life and not letting a disability cripple you.” Wheels 2 Water, a project of the not-forprofit Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury, provides specially equipped surfboards with handles and leg bumpers. Two wheelchairs with dune buggy tires transport the athletes from the boardwalk across the sand to the sea and each participant wears a special life vest with attached scuba tanks for safety. The goal of Wheels2Water is to help provide physically disabled individuals with the opportunity to enjoy the recreational and therapeutic benefits of water sports in order to improve their overall quality of life and health. Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny
how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of
our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

On May 10th, South Country School presented its annual circus under the tutelage of the Cirque du Jour Circus Company. The theme for this year’s exciting event was Back To The Past. South Country teacher Mrs. Paolantonio, along with Mrs. Dobbs and Mrs. Schmidt, worked feverishly all week to prepare 5th grade students for this truly spectacular event.
Circus experts Mr. Josh, Mr. Chris, and Ms. Sora prepared the students to perform as clowns, acrobats, jugglers and plate spinners. Students also learned to manage devil sticks, stilt walkers, and unicycles. The students’ skills dazzled audience members as they performed to music from the Jackson Five and Rascal Flats. Participating in a circus is a way for
children to increase their self-esteem and physical awareness while working together as a team. The daytime show greatly impressed the school community and the evening show was performed to the delight of the 5th grade parents and families. All of this was accomplished with only one week of practice, truly an amazing feat!

On the evening of May 16th, over 1,000 people attended Bay Shore Gardiner Manor Schools 17th Annual Art Show and Exhibition at Gardiner Manor School, a tradition started by veteran Art teacher Mr. Graff. “I am proud to say that the show featured at least one work by each and every student in the school,” explained Mr. Graff, who went on to say, “though not every project by every student got in. I included the best works by
the students. After doing this in Bay Shore for 17 years, it never ceases to amaze me what talents the students have.” The gymnasium was temporarily transformed into an art gallery to accommodate the crowds of proud parents, grandparents and siblings who came to see the dazzling display of works rendered in paint, pen and ink, pastel, crayon and marker. Also on display were projects completed by students from the morning
Art Club. While Mr. Graff professed to be delighted by the size of the crowd, he confessed to being somewhat saddened by the occasion as well. The exhibit was his final show at Gardiner Manor as he is due to retire in June after spending 35 years in Arts Education. Mr. Graff has certainly earned his retirement, but the tradition he began at Gardiner Manor will continue for many years to come.
