Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents. According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s First Annual Stakes A Great Success

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, held its First Annual Stakes on Friday, June 5th, 2020. The event proved to be a great success while having its attendees cheering on the jockeys and their horses remotely. Just over $25,000 was raised through this unique virtual event. Pal-O-Mine CEO and founder Lisa Gatti stated, “A special thank you to all who sponsored, watched, rode and cheered on the jockeys and outriders

at our first Pal-O-Mine Stakes. FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from

the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
