Operation Deep Dive | Military Veteran Suicide Prevention Study Seeks Interviewees An average of 17 military veterans die by suicide every day, and Long Island residents have the opportunity to help end this crisis by supporting Operation Deep Dive (OpDD), a community-based veteran suicide prevention study taking place in New York and 12 other states across the country. The four-year study is led by national nonprofit America’s Warrior Partnership and researchers from the University of Alabama with support from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. The study directors will host a Facebook Live broadcast on Wednesday, June 16, at 2 p.m. EST to discuss local suicide prevention initiatives with guest speakers Beth Murphy, Senior Deputy Commissioner at Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, and Marcelle Leis, Director of Veteran Services at the Association for Men-
tal Health and Wellness. The Facebook Live will be viewable on the America’s Warrior Partnership Facebook page both during and after the broadcast. For example, OpDD is currently seeking participants to interview for the study. Questions will focus on how the participant’s friend or loved on interacted with the community before their death. Tender Loving Cats to the Rescue Tender Loving Cats, a non-profit, a Long Island no-kill kitten and cat rescue run entirely by volunteers, experienced a boom in families stepping up to foster kittens and friendly adult cats over the past year due to the pandemic. This led to many more cats and kittens coming into the adoption program from the streets and finding homes. However, the need for foster families is ongoing. “Fostering is fun, rewarding and saves lives,” said Marge Goldin, a volunteer for the organization. “During ‘kitten season’ which runs April through October, Tender Loving Cats and other rescues get more requests for kitten placement than can be handled. But the number of kittens that can be saved is limited only by the number of fosters available.” Tender Loving Cats manages all the medical needs of the cats/kittens and provides assistance and support throughout the process. Once they are old enough and socialized, Tender Loving cats uses social media to find them
forever homes. No cat or kitten is adopted before they are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Goldin says that Tender Loving Cats is always in need of volunteers to assist in working 2-hour shifts in the two adoption centers that the organization runs out of two PetSmart locations in North Babylon and West Babylon. “This past year has been especially challenging, as the number of homeless cats has risen, whether due to people losing their jobs and not being able to care for their cats anymore or moving to other locations and leaving their cats behind,” Goldin said. “We are stretched to the limit, but we are determined to save as many cats as possible. We have a motto at Tender Loving Cats that we rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned and we try to do just that.” Occasionally Tender Loving Cats is faced with situations where cats or kittens have serious medical challenges. Blindness, deafness, injury, illness or special
medication needs present themselves. Recently, as part of a widespread initiative trying to manage the cat population at Hofstra University, a volunteer took on the responsibility to foster a kitten born missing its back legs. The volunteer, Claudia Cannam, a Hofstra law student, is currently looking into getting the kitten a prosthesis. Rescues the mistreat Tender Loving Cats has a Trap-Neuter-Return program that targets the feral cat explosion on Long Island. Help for ferals is available in the form of trap rental and assistance with trapping. The rescue also can offer financial assistance to low income cat parents seeking to neuter their pets. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. New Study Shows Transcendental Meditation Effective For Reducing Veterans’ Stress Veterans with posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) who practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique showed significant reductions in symptom severity, according to a new study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress http:// doi.org/10.1002/jts.22665. The study’s principal investigator was Mayer Bellehsen, PhD, director of the Unified Behavioral Health Center for Military Veterans and their Families in Bay Shore, Long Island and member. “ Tr a n s c e n d e n t a l Meditation is a nontrauma-focused, easyto-learn technique that was found in this study to improve PTSD symptoms, likely through the experience of physical rest,” said Dr. Bellehsen. “In contrast to commonly administered therapies for PTSD that are traumafocused and based on a patient’s recall of past traumatic experiences, this intervention does not require extensive review of traumatic history, which some individuals find difficult to engage in. This intervention may therefore be more tolerable for some individuals struggling with PTSD.” The randomized controlled trial assigned 40 veterans with documented PTSD to either the TM group or a “treatment as usual” control group. The TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with
twice-a-day daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. The results showed large effect sizes, indicating a strong TM treatment impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures. Other facts associated with trauma, such as depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, also showed a strong impact as a result of TM treatment. “This trial corroborates the findings of a large clinical trial published in The Lancet Psychiatry,” said Sanford Nidich, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Social-Emotional Health at Maharishi International University Research Institute, and study coinvestigator. “The current study further supports the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation as a first-line treatment for PTSD in veterans. The availability of an additional evidence-based therapy will benefit veterans, both by offering them a greater range of options and by serving as an alternative treatment strategy for those who don’t want to engage in trauma-focused treatment or who aren’t responding to a previous PTSD intervention.” The authors pointed out in their research paper that TM may positively affect trauma symptom severity
through the reduction of hyperarousal symptoms. Previous research has shown that the practice of TM decreases physiological responses to stressful stimuli. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell. “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. Serve Steak Alongside A Backyard Barbecue Staple A night of al fresco dining next to a grill in the backyard can be a great way to spend Father’s Day! Nearly any type of food can be grilled, and steaks tend to be especially good when cooked over an open flame. The following recipe for “Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter” from Laurie McNamara’s “Simple Scratch” (Avery) is sure to please, especially when coupled with McNamara’s recipe for “Baked Beans,” a musthave staple for any backyard barbecue.

Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter Serves 4 to 6 8 tablespoons (1 stick) plus 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 1⁄2 cup sliced shallot 1 heaping cup sliced cremini mushrooms 2 large cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon coarsely chopped fresh thyme leaves 1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed 1⁄4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper, plus more as needed 4 to 6 steaks (such as ribeye, New York strip or porterhouse) Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add the shallot and cook until golden and slightly crispy, 7 to 8 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the shallot to a clean plate. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, then add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook until the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer to the plate with the shallot and let cool. In a small bowl, use a rubber spatula to blend the remaining 8 tablespoons of butter with the cooled
mushroom mixture until combined. Place the butter in the center of a piece of parchment paper. Bring the edges together and press with your fingers to form the butter into a log. Roll and twist the ends before popping the butter into the refrigerator for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Set the steaks on the counter for 30 minutes to bring them up to room temperature. Meanwhile, preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high or about 400 F. Season both sides of the steaks with 2 pinches of salt and a pinch of pepper. Grill each steak for 6 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and the desired doneness. Tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes. Slice the mushroom butter into coins and top each of the steaks with two coins before serving.

Combine the bacon and onion in a medium Dutch oven. Slowly cook over medium heat until the onion is tender and the bacon is cooked, 8 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the ketchup, molasses, sugar, ground mustard, ground cloves, and 1 cup water to combine. Add the cooked beans and pour the mixture into the pot with the bacon and onion. Stir, cover and bake for 1 hour, stirring Baked Beans every 20 minutes. Serves 10 Add the salt and stir. 2 15-ounce cans navy Uncover and let sit for 15 to beans, drained and rinsed 20 minutes before serving.
Popular Graduation Traditions Graduation is steeped in tradition. Come the day of graduation, many gradsto-be might be focusing on receiving their diplomas and then celebrating after the ceremony. The hard work students put in affords them every right to celebrate once they’re officially anointed as new grads, but before the party begins it can be fun to reflect on the many traditions associated with graduation ceremonies. Cap and gown Graduation ceremonies simply wouldn’t be the same without caps and gowns. The tradition is anything but new, as Columbia University notes caps and gowns have been linked to academia since the 12th century. Back then, students wore gowns and hoods to emulate the clergy who taught them, but also to stay warm. Many universities dressed their scholars in gowns from the 1700s onward. In 1786, one school, Brown University, even mandated that degree candidates be clad in flowing robes and caps at commencement ceremonies. Though educators and students
may no longer wear caps and gowns when attending class or around campus, the tradition of doing so at commencement ceremonies has endured. Tassel turning The tradition of turning the tassel does not have the lengthy history of the cap and gown, dating back only decades rather than centuries. Graduates typically turn the tassels after everyone has received their degrees during the ceremony. The turn is symbolic of their transition from student to graduate. Tassels start on the right for high school students and college undergraduates and are then turned to the left, while recipients of master’s degrees and doctorates keep their tassels on the left throughout the commencement ceremonies. Tossing caps in the air The tossing of graduation caps in the air is believed to date back more than 100 years. Prior to 1912, graduates of the United States Naval Academy had to serve as midshipmen for two years before they were commissioned as officers.
As a result, they still needed their graduation caps. But beginning with the class of 1912, graduates were automatically commissioned as officers, so they no longer needed their hats. That led the graduates to throw them in the air, thus beginning one of the more fun and photo-worthy graduation traditions. Pomp and Circumstance This tradition marked by the playing of “Pomp and Circumstance” is rooted in the work of William Shakespeare, which makes it seem like a perfect fit for graduation ceremonies. Sir Edward Elgar composed “Pomp and Circumstance” in 1901 and the title for the song was inspired by a line in the bard’s “Othello.” Elgar received an honorary degree from Yale University in 1905, and during that ceremony “Pomp and Circumstance” was played. The song apparently made a strong impression, as it soon began to be played at various commencement ceremonies, a tradition that continues today.

However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drivein movie theater. The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself. While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space. Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same. “A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black
teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
