Home Garden A Guide To Buying And Setting Up A Bird Bath Warm weather means more opportunities to spend time outdoors while at home. Whether your favorite form of outdoor recreation includes sitting on the patio reading or digging in the garden, there’s a good chance that you will be sharing the space with local wildlife. Optimizing opportunities to view and interact with backyard wildlife can make the great outdoors even more enjoyable. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology indicates that there are around 2,059 bird species on the continent of North America. Red-winged blackbirds, yellowrumped warblers, American robins, and chipping sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds in North America. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction. Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds
require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. There are four general types of bird baths: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted, and ground-level. In general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water birds use are on or near the ground. Therefore, groundlevel bird baths may be the best investments. It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow (around two inches of water or less). This enables birds to splash
around safely and wade in. Birds do not want to slide around, so a material that is coated and slippery, like glazed ceramic or glass, may not be too popular. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris. Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.

Girls On The Run Long Island To Hold Its First Virtual 5k In June Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations. With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland. org/5k, participants will receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20. Leading up to the run, GOTR Long Island will
share information about the run and fun activities on its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @gotrlongisland. This will include training for walking or running the 5K, indoor alternatives, and safety tips along with fun activities usually seen at a GOTR 5K. Covid-19 Online Bereavement Support Groups People are unable to grieve the loss of loved ones in ways they are used to. No wakes for Christians. No shivas for Jews. No threeday mourning periods for Muslims. That’s why Long Island’s two leading, county-based mental health organizations have begun offering online bereavement support groups designed to provide comfort, support, and “grief tools” to those who have lost loved ones to the COVID-19 virus. For more information and to register, go to www. bereavement.mhaw.org. Mandatory social distancing has sharply curtailed people’s ability to grieve in conventional, in-person settings. In the absence of the intimate contact typically associated with the mourning process, these remote, weekly bereavement sessions aim to mollify the pain of individuals whose family members or close friends have succumbed to COVID-19. The “COVID-19 Bereavement Support Group” initiative is hosted by the Suffolk County-based Association for Mental Health and Wellness and the Mental Health Association of Nassau County. Guided by experienced grief counselors, the groups will convene remotely in 60- or 90-minute sessions via a secure Zoom line over the course of a fouror six-week period. There is no cost to take part and registration – which is limited to 12 participants per group – is on a firstcome basis. “As everyone can
imagine, losing a loved one to the virus is a deeply painful and jarring experience,” said Michael Stoltz, C.E.O. of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, which is headquartered in Ronkonkoma. “We’ve identified skilled and sensitive grief counselors who are well qualified to help participants build comforting pathways for healing, even in a technologically remote setting.” “The pandemic’s restrictions largely prevent mourners from experiencing the reassuring feelings of hugs and other types of close-up contact,” said Jeffrey McQueen, Executive Director of the Hempstead-based Mental Health Association of Nassau County. “Grieving remotely can’t fully replace the face-to-face experience, but it can help reinforce feelings of hope and help fill the void.” Participants in any of the five COVID-19 Bereavement Support Groups must be mourning the loss of a family member or close friend who has died from COVID-19. The group categories are: Grieving Adults Support Groups: For people who have lost a loved one to coronavirus and cannot grieve in person with their loved ones. The group will bring together others who are struggling to come to terms with the loss, to create a sense of closure, and to grieve in community. There will be two groups in this category. Peer Bereavement Support Group: For individuals experiencing
a mental health condition who have lost a loved one to coronavirus. Participants have a safe and supportive space to share their stories with others who can truly relate to their pain and experiences. Veterans Bereavement Support Group: For Veterans and their families who have lost someone to coronavirus and cannot grieve in person with their loved ones. This group will deal with issues specific to the Veterans community. Creative Arts Bereavement Support Group: The making of art can serve as a safe outlet for the expression of thoughts and emotions relating to death and loss. By expressing these feelings in a symbolic manner, mourners can nurture their sense of control, organization, and containment. Participants
may use such art supplies as copy paper, colored pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, and glue. Those interested may register at www. bereavement.mhaw.org. A Stony Brook Medicine research study is underway to determine if blood plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 can help treat hospitalized patients with active COVID-19 infection. Stony Brook is seeking coronavirus survivors to donate blood plasma and researchers are collecting the convalescent serum to use in an experimental treatment strategy in those battling the disease. Plasma, the liquid portion of the blood, which helps with clotting and supporting immunity, contains antibodies that can potentially be used to kill the virus. Catholic Health Services Offers Tips to Reduce COVID-19 Anxiety As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral
Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important. Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and
difficulty sleeping. Atypical reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short period of time seek professional mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirusrelated anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety
• Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive moments, amplify positive stories and stay optimistic • Practice mindfulness when managing anxiety such as performing exercises and deep breathing. For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including Telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for emergency department (ED) patients, particularly
after normal office hours. The service is currently offered in the EDs of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
