The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Tuesday, May 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s teen substance abuse and addiction programs. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Club for a delicious dinner overlooking Peconic Bay. At a time when so many families know first-hand the pain of having a child struggling with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidence-based programs

direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. LICADD also offers evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and advocates for comprehensive and responsible public policy related to addiction. “Our clients are getting younger and younger as the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day,” said LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “The expanding need for services is staggering, and we are grateful that many community members came out today in support of Tee-Off for Our Teens.” The tournament was made possible by LICADD’s generous Sponsors, Castagna Realty, Inc., Michael Brennan, John Doolan, Freedom Mortgage, The Rabinowitz Charitable Foundation and the Peters Family. For 60 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. HOPE Project During the 2015-2016 academic year, faculty instructed students, with educational venues that included lectures, hands-on demonstrations and shadowing clinical professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as nursing, cardiology, anesthesiology, and respiratory care. At this year’s ceremony, the students expressed how much they learned from HOPE, frequently citing the thrill of shadowing doctors, seeing medical technology in action, learning from nurses about patient care, and the “amazing” breadth of the healthcare field – one that they anticipate holds many opportunities for them after they complete college. Completing the two years of HOPE inspired three students to stay and attend Stony Brook

University in the fall to continue to strive towards achieving their goals. One of those students, Michelle Najera, of Longwood High School, has an interest in dentistry. She credits the program with connecting her with a member of the dental school faculty and assisting her in the admissions process for college. “I made some really good connections through the program as well,” she said. “I got to meet Dr. Carrion and he wrote me a letter of recommendation which I believe helped me a tremendous amount when applying to college.” Katterin De La Cruz from Brentwood High School plans to become an emergency medicine physician or a surgeon. She says that she loves the “rush of the emergency room” and “the idea that every case that walks

through the door has its own unique story amazes me and that one day I would be the one putting people back together is just very cool.” Some of the other colleges these HOPE graduates will attend include: Allegheny College, Cornell University, Farmingdale State College, Monroe College, St. Joseph’s College, SUNY New Paltz, Suffolk County Community College, and West Virginia University.

Thirteen high school seniors who completed Stony Brook University Hospital’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program celebrated their “graduation” from the program and are on their way to college. A ceremony took place at the hospital on May 10th to honor their accomplishments. Under the mentorship of Stony Brook faculty, the two-year program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th students from the Brentwood, Longwood and Wyandanch school districts and preps them for future careers in the health industry. Since its inception in 2005, HOPE has helped open new avenues for hundreds of promising high school students from underserved and racially and ethnically diverse communities.

While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

Fire Island Dance Festival Fire Island Dance Festival, one of the most talked-about summer events on Fire Island, will return to dazzle, excite and captivate audiences on July 15th-17th. Special Information Session Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA), which is comprised of commissioners from 21 water districts across Long Island, recently held a special information session led by guest speakers Joseph C. Ferreira and Thomas J. Ruggiero, Partners at Hauppaugebased Albrecht, Viggiano, Zureck & Company, P.C. (AVZ) Certified Public Accountants, addressed the Commissioners on the topic of “NYS Comptroller Audits.” Hosted by Albertson Water District Commissioners Howard Abbondondelo, Richard Ockovic and Kenneth Vey, the session’s focus was on the constitutional and statutory objectives of auditing. “The difference between independent audits and comptroller audits includes scope and materiality,” stated Mr. Ferreira. “Being

thoroughly prepared includes operational and control considerations, especially internal operations, as well as compliance with New York State general municipal law and their own internal policies and procedures.” Mr. Ruggiero added, “There is a distinct need to have policies for traditional topics such as purchasing, investments, and fixed assets. In today’s world, IT, disaster recovery and business continuity must also have policies in place.” NSWCA President Raymond Averna of Massapequa Water District commented, ““The subsequent hands on Q&A session brought deeper discussion of several interrelated topics, including the Top 10 internal controls, and delved into important governance issues that concern all member water district commissioners.

Taking Steps for a Cure Danielle Bursky from Plainview is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Long Island’s Take Steps walk. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park. Danielle is living with Crohn’s disease which combined with ulcerative

colitis are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more than 1.6 million American adults and children, including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18. Danielle was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at 9 years old. It took a few years for her to get on the right medication and get her

disease under control. Like many she has had many ups and downs. Danielle’s parents have always tried to keep things “normal” in her life and have never let her use my medical condition as a crutch. “I have been involved with CCFA for 5 years and love participating in the annual Take Steps Walk,” says Danielle. “I accepted
