St. John the Baptist DHS Junior Michael McKenna of Blue Point has received a distinctive award, being named a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist for 2017-2018. Students who are selected as National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists score in the top 96th percentile of all students who take the PSAT exam. Two St. John’s Seniors, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack and Dominick

Town of Islip officials held a public hearing that was attended by hundreds, who turned out both in favor of, or in opposition to, the proposed Heartland Town Square project. The Heartland Town Square proposal involves the development of the former Pilgrim State site into a mixed-use space, containing commercial, retail and residential areas, in what developers are calling a “selfcontained community.” Over 144 members of the public registered to voice their opinions on the proposal at the meeting, adding to the roughly 1,600 comments submitted online through the Town’s website. “This is one of the most important decisions to ever come before the Islip Town Board, and we have to ensure that the public is given every chance to be heard,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Last night we heard spirited comments from people and groups representing

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

Annual Gardening Day. The project, spearheaded by Councilman Flotteron, brought together dozens of dedicated citizens, who worked throughout the day to clean-up and beautify the estate’s grounds at Brookwood Hall. Staff and volunteers planted 24 ornamental cherry trees, which now

line the property’s original gated Main Street entrance at the waterfall. Flowers were planted around the estate’s signage, and additional shrubbery was added to the lakefront esplanade. Volunteers also cleared debris throughout the day.

SINK OR FLOAT - Do you know what effect density has on whether something will sink or float? Studnets in Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Carino’s class at South Country School can tell you! During a recent lesson, the students created different “vessels” to test whether the density changes the buoyancy.

INSTAGRAM ILLUSTRATION - Students on Team 62 at Bay Shore Middle School recently used a popular social media application as inspiration for an assignment. As part of a reading unit, students created an Instagram post for the Minotaur in Percy Jackson. They illustrated pictures and created a caption, and then left comments on other students’ “posts.”

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS - The Islip Town Board recently held its annual Student Achievement Awards ceremony, honoring students from across the Town in a range of subjects. The students had to demonstrate that their success in a subject went above and beyond what is normally expected of a student. The Town Board members thanked the students for their hard work, and thanked the parents and teachers as well who have succeeded alongside the students.
