ANNUAL WRITING CONTEST - The Bay Shore High School English Department held its annual student writers’ conference, Ethnic Pen. New York Times reporter and columnist Dan Barry gave a keynote speech that highlighted the importance of each individual sharing his or her voice and story. The audience was also entertained by the musical group Redobles de Cultura. After the main assembly, students worked with local writers in smaller workshops.

Meet Your Neighbor! Bellina’s Pizza
Bellina’s Pizza & Restaurant, located at 22 East Main Street in East Islip, was recently welcomed to the community on November 1st of last year. Owned and operated by co-owners Haki Mucaji and his brother-in-law Mati Shatri, this establishment was immediately seen as a
great addition to the other Main Street businesses. Along with serving delicious pizza, pasta, heroes and other specialties, Bellina’s has a policy of serving those in need in the surrounding neighborhood. A sign at the front door notes that anyone who is hungry and unable to pay will be fed for free. As Mucaji, a native of the former Yugoslavia, reminisced, “My father always said - do good and it will come back to you.” Mucaji says he brought this policy over from a former business in Bay
Shore, La Casa Pizza, where he used to work. “When I came here,” he explained, “we put the sign out. I told my employees to treat them just like paying customers.” Partner Shatri agrees, “We’re doing small things with a great heart.” The response from the community has been extremely welcoming. Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,
Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by
all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time
for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Teacher Presents
In March, Bay Shore Middle School Social Studies teacher Jennifer Ingold presented at the 80th annual LibertyCon New York State Social Studies Conference in Albany, New York. Mrs. Ingold presented her innovative approach
to “Cracking the Social Studies Code for Enduring Issues in Middle School” to a standing room only audience of approximately 130 administrators and educators from across the state of New York. Mrs. Ingold briefly shared her work in creatively
helping every middle school student to be able to relate and understand the increased rigor of the new Social Studies framework and standards. The Enduring Issues Essay is a challenging and integral component of the new Global Regents Exam. Mrs. Ingold’s presentation and resource tool kit continues to receive positive feedback from educators across the state who have repeatedly referred to its content as both “refreshing” and “impressive.” Mrs. Ingold’s presentation not only showcased her hard work and leadership as part of the Bay Shore Social Studies Team, but did an excellent job showcasing the high expectations and excellence of the Bay Shore School District.
SOUTH COUNTRY SENDOFF - South Country School students came together for a special send off. Clara Colon, wife of South Country security guard Jose Colon and mother of former South Country students Jose, Jayden and Justin, is a Tech Sergeant with the Air Force. The students gave her a warm send off as she prepared to deploy to Iraq with the 106th Rescue Wing.

Town Board Honorees
Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board, welcomed more than 40 students, their families, and administrators at the Town’s 40th annual Student Achievement ceremony held during the April Town Board meeting. The students, who were hand-picked for having exhibited academic excellence in a total of 11 different categories, hailed from schools across Islip Town and beyond, including: Bay Shore,
Brentwood (Freshman Center, Sonderling, Ross), Central Islip, Chaminade, Connetquot, Islip, St. John the Baptist, and West Islip. Forty-one students in total received awards for outstanding performance in the categories of Performing Arts, Fine Arts, Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, Scholarship & Athletics, Leadership, Service to People in Need, Technology, Social Studies, and Secondary Language. The performance portion of the contest includes a field assignment, conceptual assignment, portrait studio – where a student will create a conceptual piece of art, commercial studio, photo challenge, a digital editing session, a troubleshooting section, print competition, and job interview to assess job preparedness.
