A magnificent handcrafted Living Legacy Tree now adorns the LICADD Executive Offices in Westbury. The tree was a brainchild of LICADD staff to honor and memorialize those lost and pay tribute to those dedicated to the field of substance abuse and recovery. Championed by LICADD Board Member, Father Philip Eichner of Kellenberg Memorial High School (KMHS), the tree was designed and created by artisan, Frederick H. Weber of Weber Woods with assistance from the KMHS carpentry department. The striking Living Legacy Tree was crafted using over fifteen varieties of wood from the United States, Africa and South America, including Cherry, White Oak, Padouk and Purpleheart. The result is a mosaic-like pattern and evokes the feeling of many coming together

Check the Calendar So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.
If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several

months, weeks, days… even five minutes. How much time is spent planning; yet, of that, very little - if any - is devoted to these questions. We simply forge on, blind to our desires. It’s funny, when you take a moment, the realization kicks in of how few things we do in our daily lives that truly make us happy. Sure, there will always be obligations of one sort or another; but we can frame those with other tasks that are slightly more fulfilling and productive over the long term. The key is figuring out what those are, sooner rather than later. Then you can pencil them in on the calendar.

Bowlers, sponsors and spectators recently came together at Farmingdale Lanes in Farmingdale to make a difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs, raising more than $22,000 to benefit Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD). ACLD Foundation’s second annual Bowling For An Enviable Life FUNdraiser brought people supporting ACLD together, with members of the ACLD family joining ACLD partners and the community for some bowling fun while helping ACLD pursue its mission to provide children and adults
with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities with opportunities for pursuing enviable lives, increasing their independence and fostering supportive relationships within the community. “For the second consecutive year, the people ACLD supports and those who help us pursue our mission enjoyed an incredibly special and rewarding afternoon,” said ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith “We are grateful to all the bowlers and sponsors who made this event a success.” “Bowling For An Enviable Life is a wonderful, fun-filled
day that everyone who believes in and supports the ACLD mission can come out and enjoy, along with their families,” said Mark Small, CFO/COO of Allegiant Health and ACLD Foundation Board Member. “I was very proud to be involved in this event and to contribute to its success.” More than 350 bowlers participated and several dozen spectators came to show their support for the bowlers as well as ACLD. Diocesan STEM Fair Held On Saturday morning, April 8th, 75 teams of students from 25 Catholic elementary schools across Long Island met at Holy Trinity High School for the Diocesan STEM Fair. The students, who had all qualified by being one of the stand-out exhibits in their school’s science fair, came to have their projects judged by a panel of teachers, Holy Trinity Honors Science students and some guest judges. The student teams competed in two categories, representing
grades 5 and 6 and those representing grades 7 and 8. The exhibits were judged by 13 teams of three judges, each with a teacher, student and guest judge. Exhibits were evaluated based on their concept, the use of the scientific method to make their analysis, and the overall impression made by the way the experiments were displayed and explained. While all of the contestants rising to this level brought great work, the judges scored the experiments and awarded
prizes to three winners in each age category. Nearly 400 fire departments across New York State have already signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). On April 29th30th, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. Members of the public are invited to visit their local firehouses, where volunteer firefighters will be conducting tours of their facilities, demonstrating firefighting techniques, and allowing visitors to try on turnout gear. These activities, and more, will give visitors a taste of what it means to be in the fire service, and volunteer firefighters will be on hand to discuss the requirements and rewards of joining. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, including families with
replacement, all-paid fire service would be $3.87 billion. Furthermore, property taxes in New York State would rise by an estimated average of 26.5%. These figures do not factor in the costs of acquiring the necessary facilities and equipment needed to accommodate a paid fire service. The volunteer fire service, and efforts like RecruitNY, make the State not only safer, but also more affordable. Established in 2011, RecruitNY is a joint undertaking by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC), Association of Fire Districts of New York State, Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York, and County Fire Coordinators Association of the State of New York. distributed to Northport VA hospital residents and Stony Brook State Veteran home residents. There enough to send to our military personal overseas, along with local unit Chaplin throughout Suffolk County. In addition, one of our sister auxiliary units in Albany will get a supply of cards to use for their
project at their local airport. A great big thank you to all who came to our “card party” separating cards by topic, finding envelopes for mailing, etc. It was a project we made work and VP Smith was excited that the cards were able to be used by so many veterans, their families and our military.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, teamed up with Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini, to conduct a Senior Safety presentation at the Ceasar Trunzo Senior Center in Brentwood recently. The event shed light on the different types of scams senior citizens can fall prey to, including telephone scams, computer scams, and door-to-door solicitations. The Supervisor and Police Commissioner reminded seniors that the IRS does not initiate telephone calls to taxpayers asking for money, and advised residents never to share their personal identity information, credit card numbers or banking information with
anyone. “The Town of Islip offers residents, including our treasured senior population, many informative programs and resources. Today’s Senior Safety presentation in conjunction with the Suffolk County Police Department and Commissioner Tim Sini, provided invaluable information to help senior citizens protect themselves from the devious acts of scammers,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We are grateful to Commissioner Sini for taking the time to share these important tips with our residents.” “I want to thank Supervisor Carpenter for organizing today’s event,
where we were able to provide useful information to our seniors about protecting themselves from a range of financial scams. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco hosted a seminar for the Suffolk County Cooperative Library System today to help educate library staff about gangs in Suffolk County. Sheriff DeMarco was joined by officers from the Sheriff’s Gang Intelligence Unit as well as Dino Johnson from Council For Unity, a preventative program offered inside the correctional facility and in many schools. Sheriff DeMarco gave the opening remarks at the forum, which featured topics such as gang trends in Suffolk County and
ways that gangs recruit youth. The Sheriff spoke about the tragic events of the past few months in which young people have been murdered by gang members in Suffolk County. He also spoke about the importance of community collaboration to enhance public safety in communities prone to gang proliferation. DeMarco stated, “This problem is national in scope, but Long Island has been particularly impacted by gang activity. All too often people want to pretend this isn’t happening in their
neighborhoods, but gangs are everywhere. We need to educate people who are in community about what to look for, and inform them about what to do if they see gang members recruiting outside their premises.” The Sheriff’s Office is planning more seminars in the near future.
