Helping Hunger The 2015 National League pennant champions New York Mets are once again teaming up with Island Harvest Food Bank for the annual “Home Run to End Hunger” event, sponsored by Petro Home Services, to raise funds to help provide food support to the more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger each and every day. Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to
summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of
weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

I remember a well worn Yankee cap and sudsy beer, lots of it the ensuing brawl with Tess always capped with laughter. I remember that laughter honest boundless and everywhere the sly stealthy humor the genial ready wink. I remember licorice and Santa Clauses sundaes and Church stained glass and collection baskets lots of those. I remember the end with countless living tears I remember a man like a blanket embracing, healing channeling life. I remember love I remember my grandfather.

Fire Island Inlet Project On Tuesday, April 12th, the United States Army Corps of Engineers approved the Real Estate Certification completed by Suffolk County and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for
the Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet (FIMI) Project, Contract 3, which completes 18 months of real estate work conducted by the County and DEC. This real estate certification will allow the contract, which
encompasses the Fire Island Communities from Fair Harbor to Seaview, to proceed. Contract 3A will place an estimated 1,400,000 cubic yards of sand as a dune and berm system along the aforementioned
communities. Bids to contract for the work will be received in May 2016 and contract will be awarded in June 2016. Taking into consideration numerous factors concerning construction proceeding in
the height of the summer season, including the concerns of residents about interference with beach use, the health and safety of visitors to Fire Island and the potential negative impact on the economy in the affected communities,
it has been decided that the actual construction of the dune and berm will not begin until on or after September 19th, 2016. This construction is expected to be completed by the end of March 2017.

The Music Lovers Club was founded in 1925 to share an interest in and appreciation of music, to extend to others the pleasure derived from and to provide scholarships to outstanding young musicians who are seniors in high school and live in the towns of Babylon and Islip. The hope is that these scholarships will help foster the continuation of their musical development. This year, as they celebrate their 90th year,
they are proud to say that on Sunday, April 24th, they will be presenting their 66th annual Scholarship Benefit Concert. The performers for the concert will be this year’s winners. Umps Visit Vets When Major League Baseball Umpire Jerry Layne talks, people listen. Whether calling balls and strikes in major league games or telling amusing baseball anecdotes to injured and ill veterans at VA medical centers - he gets attention. He’ll be telling those stories and more to veterans on April 14th, during a special celebrity visit to the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, in New York.
Umpires have the reputation of being gruff, no nonsense guys who don’t want their judgment questioned, but Jerry’s heart overflows when he visits injured and ill veterans in VA medical centers. He’s been umpiring in the majors since 1988, a profession which demands that he visit each city on the major league circuit. It’s during those trips that he takes time to visit veterans who

are patients in VA medical centers as part of the DAV VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) program. “I want to bring smiles and brighter days to those veterans who have given so much to our country,” Mr. Layne said. “I want them to know they are appreciated.” There are 197 VA medical centers in the US which treat the 2.3 million veterans represented by the DAV. Many veterans spend long, lonely hours during lengthy hospital stays and Mr. Layne’s visits are enthusiastically welcomed. Major League Baseball Umpire Larry Barnett started the hospital visit program in 1977 as part of the DAV VAVS program and actively recruited Mr. Layne. “We have a free country because veterans made it free and keep it free,” Mr. Layne said. “Brightening the lives of injured and ill veterans with a friendly visit is a very small price to pay for what all Americans owe them.”

99 Years Young Recently Legislator Tom Barraga and Councilman Steve Flotteron joined in the 99th birthday celebration for pre-centenarian Esther Cohen at the East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center located in West Babylon, New York. Esther was born on April 6th, 1917 in Hoboken, New Jersey, moved to the Bronx, and later to Bay Shore, New York. She survives her husband Abraham, has two sons, Jack and Martin; three grandchildren, Adam, Craig and Yizchak; and three great grandchildren, Yoni, Channah and Nesya. Esther has always been an extremely socially active person. They are currently learning all about Spring animals. They have learned the vocabulary for the animals through movement and song. They learned “pajaritos a bailar,” which is the chicken dance. LICADD Grant Received has to date, successfully matched 75 at-risk children with screened/ trained adult mentors. Enrollment in the program has quadrupled over the last three year with 61% of matches recommitting to a second year in the program. LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program provides children with a positive adultchild relationship on a stable and predictable basis. The BUDDY Program’s goals are to enhance the protective factors in children of parents incarcerated by helping them to create predictable and attached relationships with one or more adults; promote and facilitate participation by underserved youth in educational and cultural activities that enhance their academic, cultural and social competency skills,
build self-esteem and develop self-confidence. These activities provide opportunities for our children to learn respect for diverse cultures, avoid unsafe and destructive behaviors including gang participation, bullying and experimentation with drugs and alcohol and to ensure that young people’s risk factors are identified and addressed promptly through direct service provision and/ or referrals to ancillary services. This program further facilitates the delivery of a wide range of support services to at-risk children of incarcerated parents helping to break the multi-generational cycle incarceration frequently fueled by addiction. “We are so grateful to the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for supporting this
important program. LICADD will continue to work with partner agencies to bring about increased support for these most vulnerable children.” says Executive Director Steve Chassman. For over 60 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat

(LICADD) was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for the Building Unique Dynamic and Diverse Youth (BUDDY) program.
