Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is welcoming back its annual tradition of in-person walking of the Stations of the Cross prayer services at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury on one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar during the 2022 Lenten season. One of the largest attended events for Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, Catholic faithful across Long Island are invited to return and take part in the tradition of following a 1.5-mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through 14 stations each year on Good Friday, which is April 15th this year. Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org While vast numbers of young people on Long Island are fortunate to be raised in stable and well-functioning households, the sad truth is that many children and adolescents in Nassau and Suffolk counties face major difficulties as they grow up, confronting challenges such as substance use, mental health disorders, incarcerated parents, child abuse and trauma, amongst other issues. Fortunately, a number of highly committed non-profit organizations in our area are working every day to provide those young people with opportunities to improve their circumstances and to put their lives on a strong and promising footing. Hope for Youth, is one of these outstanding organizations. Founded in 1969, Hope for Youth is a private social service agency that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of children, adolescents and families on Long Island. Based in Amityville, the organization provides residential care, foster care, preventive services and out-patient programs that help young people become self-sufficient and achieve their full potential. Remarkably, through its multiple residential and out-patient facilities and programs, Hope for Youth impacts the lives of more than 14,000 local children, teens and families each year.

To fulfill its vision of offering residential, community-based alternatives for emotionally troubled children, Hope for Youth first opened a group home in Bellmore to serve adolescent males. Since then, the agency, which now has a staff of 175 employees and interns, has grown to offer a range of programs that provide a full spectrum of services, all reflecting a detailed and closely monitored hierarchy of needs of Long Island’s youth and families. While the bulk of Hope for Youth’s funding comes from contracts with Suffolk County, Nassau County and New York State, donations from supporters also serve as a key component of its budget. Hope for Youth also depends upon support from volunteers from the community, who help with administrative support, community outreach, fundraising, residential programs and event planning. The visionary founder of Hope for Youth was the late Nassau County Family Court Judge Elizabeth Bass Golding, a pioneer activist for children’s rights. Judge Golding had learned that, in the mid 1960s, half of the children in the state’s psychiatric hospital system were there simply because of the lack of suitable, viable, community-based home alternatives for youth. A problem solver, the judge proceeded to spearhead a

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Announces Its Third Annual Derby Stakes

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, will be holding its Third Annual Derby Stakes on Friday, May 6th, 2022 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Unlike last year’s virtual event, this year’s Derby Stakes will be a live event at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY. “We are so excited to bring our popular live Derby Stakes back for the enjoyment of Long Islanders,” said Pal-OMine Equestrian founder and CEO Lisa Gatti. “It is a wonderful family event in the fresh outdoors where people of all ages can enjoy watching our horses and staff compete in several fun races. In the program, we emulate the real Derby experience, from the trumpeter signaling the start of the races to a real

life jockey announcing the horses and the outriders as they enter the arena. The winners are showered with ribbons and a wreath of flowers.” This year will also feature of Parade of Breeds showcasing many unique breeds of horses that Pal-O-Mine uses in their program. The Derby Stakes will feature Pal-O-Mine’s staff riding its horses in six competitive races that showcase both the herd’s versatility and the riders’ talent as horsemen and women. Among them will be a “Seattle Slow” walking race and a “Smoky Jones” canter race. Prerace activities include: interactive farm games, hat contest, paddock walk, craft fair and a photo booth. Admission is $10.00 per person (under 5 are free) and all donations from the event will go to supporting the care of the Pal-O-Mine herd of therapy horses. In addition to making a donation, there are sponsorship opportunities

for Long Island families, businesses, associations, and civic groups. The different sponsorship levels include: Race Sponsors at $250.00 per race and Parade of Breeds Sponsor at $750.00. Jovia And We Connect The Dots Continue To Build On Partnership To Impact Long Island Youth

Jovia Financial Credit Union announced its sponsorship with partner We Connect The Dots, a Westbury, NY-based non-profit that offers underserved youth the opportunity to engage in experiential learning programs for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). Jovia will support the nonprofit’s educational programs throughout 2022. The programs include exploration of technology careers, workforce development, and student-led community education programs like their signature annual Code-AThon and summer CreatingSTEAM programs. This year’s sponsorship also includes two new workforce development programs, “UpSkill NY” in partnership with Suffolk County Department of Labor, and “AI Challenge” in partnership with Amazon AWS Academy. We Connect the Dots was founded by entrepreneur and Microsoft veteran Laurie Carey to address the digital divide in communities nationally. Currently the organization works with students, primarily in Long Island and in the Greater New York Metro area. The not-for-profit’s programs incorporate diverse populations including providing underrepresented populations from low-income communities with opportunities to access and personally experience working in STEAM focused disciplines. These programs give students the skills they need to enter the workforce or continue their education in STEAM related fields such as engineering, science and computing.
