A 2019 report from the home renovation and design resource Houzz found that kitchens were the most popular room to renovate. Homeowners considering kitchen remodels should know that the Houzz report also indicated that spending on kitchen remodels increased by 27 percent. including professional ranges and built-in refrigerators that match the surrounding cabinetry. However, many mainstream brands offer “faux pro” features that can equal more expensive alternatives. Consumer Reports even notes that many budget-friendly faux pro appliances outperformed their high-end counterparts in terms of reliability. Countertops Countertops tend to capture the eye’s attention when walking into a kitchen. Outdated and/or damaged countertops grab that attention for all the wrong reasons, while updated countertops made from today’s most popular materials provide that wow factor homeowners seek. If granite is a must-have, Consumer Reports notes that homeowners can save substantial amounts of money by choosing granite from remnants at the stone yard. If marble is your ideal countertop, save money by choosing a domestic product as opposed to one imported from overseas. Cabinets Custom-built cabinets may be a dream, but they tend to be a very expensive one. Such cabinets are designed to adhere to the dimensions of the kitchen, and Consumer Reports notes that they can cost tens of thousands of dollars. If that estimate would bust your budget, examine the current layout of the existing cabinets. If the layout is fine but the cabinets need work, you can give them a whole new look by refinishing them. If the cabinets must go, stock units or semi-custom cabinets can provide a new look without busting the budget. Kitchen remodels can be expensive. But there are many affordable ways to revamp a kitchen.

PSEG Long Island and PSEG Foundation Support Island Harvest Food Bank Efforts PSEG Long Island and the PSEG Foundation are supporting the Island Harvest Food Bank in its response to critical community needs throughout Long Island as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. The mission of Island Harvest Food Bank is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. The PSEG Foundation provided the Island Harvest Food Bank a grant of $45,000 to address rising food insecurity, including children who do not have access to school feeding programs because their schools are temporarily closed because of the public health crisis. Island Harvest Food

Bank, which relies mostly on donations of surplus food by commercial food establishments, wholesalers, supermarkets, and individuals, has seen a decline in those donations recently. The grant will purchase food to ensure an uninterrupted supply for people who rely on supplemental feeding programs served by Island Harvest Food Bank. “PSEG Long Island employee volunteers support Island Harvest throughout the year,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO, PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest board member. “During this difficult time, we are grateful that the PSEG Foundation is

The Choice For Staying Put Or Moving On Many home improvement television series showcase people deciding whether to improve upon their current homes to make them into the houses of their dreams or to put “for sale” signs in their lawns and move on to something new. The question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors. Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new. According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes

permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average of six

years before selling. Since then, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is now 15 years. Part of what’s fueling this permanency is that many home buyers were able to acquire rock-bottom mortgage interest rates shortly after the 2008

recession. As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people. Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out. Very often a smarter layout and more efficient floor plan can make meaningful differences in spaces. Renovations and redesigns can make sense and often are less expensive and disruptive than moving.

Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect

with our medical staff. We are looking for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and

snacks have been pouring in and we appreciate the community’s response. We’ve also received many video messages of support and are sharing those throughout the hospital. Please keep them coming! High Technology and Strong Faith Working Together The highly unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, and subsequent shutting down of much of society, has helped to identify the things that really matter in our lives. The unique circumstances have tested our abilities to leverage the wealth of technologies that Catholic Elementary Schools have invested in, and tested the partnership between parents and educators. The families and students in our school communities have found comfort from the close relationship each has with their faith, and with each other, in the uncertainty introduced by the global pandemic. Academically, each student in a Catholic school was already a user of the Google apps for education (the Google G-Suite) and each student has a Google account that they can access from any device, anywhere they can

access the Internet. In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students. As the schools and

students enter week 2, with the technical and educational challenges under control, students are completing and sharing projects online, they are seeing and interacting with their classmates in online forums. Students are attending Liturgies and prayer services online, and their schools have even begun to bring their art and music classes to them via Skype, Zoom and Google. The things that have always made Catholic school special all remain intact – and the warmth, love and support of these beautiful faith communities has never been more important.
