Adelante of Suffolk County and Pronto of Long Island, both non-profit organizations that serve the predominantly Hispanic and Latino communities of Bay Shore, Central Islip and Brentwood, sponsored a care caravan of food and supplies to local people struggling with homelessness. Called the Help Everyone Love People (HELP) project, the Adelante and Pronto vans were filled with hot and cold food for about 500 people, clothing, personal protection equipment and hygiene products, all donated by local sponsors, including Carroll’s Kitchen, United Health Care, Angels of Long Island and Communities Loving Communities. More than 500 meals were given out by volunteers from Adelante,

Pronto, United Health Care and the students from My Brother’s Keeper. “It has been apparent that during the pandemic there are more and more people struggling with homelessness,” said Maidaya Maldonado, director of Adelante. “Adelante, together with our neighbor Pronto of Long Island, have joined forces to collect food, clothing and other muchneeded items that were distributed. We couldn’t do this without the generous support of our sponsors.” “Serving our community with our sister organization Adelante and our generous sponsors out in the neighborhoods they live in is a blessing and the beginning of many more outreach partnerships to come,” said Marc Soto,

executive director of Pronto of Long Island. Volunteers from Pronto and Adelante helped to distribute the supplies and a strong contingent from Brentwood High School’s My Brother’s Keeper group also participated. The Suffolk County Police Department was also present to assist at each of the four stops. Included in the care packages was contact information for emergency housing options, mental health crisis hotline; and other outreach organizations that can assist people struggling with homelessness. Beneﬁts Of Leisure Activities

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a ﬁxed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable

conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. SCOUTS BSA TROOPS 43 HOST FOOD DRIVE - Pictured one of the many groups of Troop 43 scouts that assisted on Saturday, March 3, 2021 as the members of Scouts BSA Troops 43-B and 43-G both chartered by AMVETS POST 76 of Bay Shore, held a food-drive at Shoprite in Bay Shore. The youth followed all CDC safety protocols, along with local, state and BSA social distancing policies. They collected over 6 overflowing shopping carts full of non-perishable supplies that were donated to several local food pantries in Bay Shore. The scouts would like to thank Shoprite of Bay Shore for allowing them to do this drive and all the shoppers who gave so generously. Troop 43 is proud to have 60 continuous years of Scouting in the Bay Shore /Brightwaters area and the scouts are pleased to be able to assist with community service and continue to participate in a quality BSA program in safe ways during this time.
