The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

The BRIDGES program also includes on site recovery support groups, drop-in hours and wellness/self-care workshops and it provides prevention programs and self-care workshops to staff, students and young adults at high schools, colleges and other organizations.

Six Long Islanders Win PSEG Long Island’s Inaugural I Love My EV Video Contest A handful of creative Long Islanders who love their electric vehicles are enjoying a little internet stardom after winning the 2021 PSEG Long Island I Love My EV Video Contest. The winners - Maximo Brito of Bay Shore, Todd Leibowitz of Bellmore, Patricia Katz of Great Neck, Ellen DeFrancesco of Oceanside, the Huang family of Plainview, and Ted Lim of Port Washington - each submitted videos sharing their passion for their cars. One winner even sang her car’s praises. Each received a $500 prize and had their videos featured online. The contest, which ran at the end of last year, encouraged drivers who lease or own plug-in electric vehicles, BEVs (battery electric vehicles) or PHEV (plugin hybrid vehicles) to submit a photo of themselves with their vehicles. The contestants also submitted short videos in which they shared their EV models and where they are charged, their vehicle’s mileage range, how long they’ve been driving an EV, and the inspiration behind their purchase. Brito, of Bay Shore, drives a Tesla Model Y. He said he loves to drive his EV

for several reasons: “It’s convenient. I have access to the HOV lanes, I get to fuel up at home, there’s no oil changes and, since electricity is my fuel and electricity is cheaper than gas, a 50-mile trip from Bay Shore to Manhattan costs me only $1.22. That’s less than a gallon of gas. Plus there’s no emissions, so it’s easier on the planet.” Leibowitz, of Bellmore, drives a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt and said he loves his EV because “it practically makes no sound, there’s no motor, and [by driving it,] I protect the environment and save on gas,” he said. He added that he will continue to drive an electric vehicle when his current lease ends. Lim, of Port Washington, has a small child and drives a 2021 Tesla Model Y. “It is so important to drive electric for the future,” he said. “Yes, it’s not the only step we need to take to minimize our carbon footprint. [However,] it is a huge step in the right direction.” Katz, of Great Neck, who drives a Tesla Model 3 sang her testimonial video, which included the lyrics, ”From upstate to downstate without a hitch. I plug in at Kingston. It’s such a stitch. It takes me

near and far, my electric car.” DeFrancesco, of Oceanside, considers herself an “eco-warrior.” She said that after six years of leasing hybrid vehicles, she decided it was the right time to go allelectric and bought herself a 2021 Tesla Model Y for her birthday. “It was easy for us to put a charger at home. Once fully charged, I can get over 300 miles,” she shared, adding that driving electric is one way she is helping save the planet for future generations. The Huangs, of Plainview, own a 2021 BMW 330e xDrive. In their video, their son, Princeton said, “I love my EV because it’s sustainable, feels like the future and, most importantly, fits perfectly into my family’s lifestyle.” PSEG Long Island created the inaugural I Love My EV Video Contest in partnership with Mission Electric, Drive Electric Long Island, and Greater Long Island Clean Cities in an effort to encourage more people to drive EVs. “With this contest, we hoped current Long Island EV drivers would share their experiences about ownership, such as charging, maintenance and mileage range, and help educate people who are

considering EVs,” said Michelle Somers, PSEG Long Island’s manager of Utility Marketing. “We were so excited to get so many great testimonials from happy EV drivers.” “Transportation remains the largest source of New York State’s greenhouse gas emissions and a major contributor to poor air quality, high asthma rates, and environmental impact in our region,” said Joy Gardner, Mission Electric’s executive director. “What better way to help cut these harmful emissions than by adopting vehicles that eliminate them altogether? We are thrilled to partner with PSEG Long Island to showcase local electric vehicle owners who are leading the charge for change by adopting zero emission vehicles!” The winners were announced earlier this month on PSEG Long Island’s social media channels and each winner received a $500 Amazon gift card. Reducing food waste can be a significant strategy in the fight against climate change. According to Project Drawdown, a nonprofit organization devoted to developing a future with reduced levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, roughly one-third of the world’s food is never eaten, but even food that ultimately goes to waste utilizes resources and produces greenhouse gases during the production cycle. In fact, Project Drawdown notes that roughly 8 percent of the world’s global emissions are emitted producing food that ultimately isn’t eaten. The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer. n support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, non-profit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on

low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Volunteering my time and medical knowledge for Paws of War and their mobile clinic is my way to honor these veterans for all they have done for our country,” said Dr. Altieri. veterinary care for their service animals; their wellness is essential in providing their exceptional service to their owners who are U.S. military veterans suffering from the emotional effects of war. The Value Of Activity-Driven Fundraisers Fundraising is vital to the survival of many nonprofit organizations. Charity watchdog groups like Charity Navigator suggest nonprofits should aspire to spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising. That can be a tall task and underscores the need for charities to find creative, cost-effective ways to raise funds. Nonprofit organizations raise funds in various ways. Activity-driven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective.

What are activity-driven fundraisers? Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds. The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activitydriven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow

suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activity-

According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more eﬃcient, and increase resilience to climate change. A signiﬁcant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table. This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.

It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels.
