New York high school seniors who are graduating and interested in pursuing a career in agriculture can apply for New York Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Youth Scholarship. Eligible students can use the financial award for college or advanced training in the skilled trades. Statewide winners can earn up to $3,000 towards their future education. The applicant or their family must be a New York Farm Bureau member, and the student must live and/or work a farm or be involved with
agriculture in the state. The student must also complete the application which includes writing an essay addressing what they value and stand for in agriculture and life and how these values have impacted their decision to pursue an agricultural career. Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include a personal interview. Each district winner will receive $250 and then compete for one of two state scholarships worth $3,000 and $2,000, based on their submitted applications.
Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2022, and the judging will take place prior to April 20, 2022. The scholarship information and webbased application can be found under “Promotion and Education” in the programs section of the website. BRIANNA’S LAW has passed and is being implemented in five annual stages that began on January 1, 2020 – depending on the age of the boat captain. All power boat operators will be required to obtain a NASBLA approved Safe Boating Certificate by January, 2025, regardless of age. So, now is the time to sign up for a Safe Boating Course to fulfill this requirement and to keep you, your friends, and family, as well as other boaters safe on our great waterways. Don’t delay… get your certificate this upcoming Spring! Offered by America’s Boating Club of the Great South Bay, you may register for one of the following two in-person courses: Thursday’s – March 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2022 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and separately, Saturday’s – April 2, 9, and 23, 2022 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Both courses will be holding all their class sessions at:

This basic boating knowledge course will give you the education required to obtain the SAFE BOATING CERTIFICATE, which is mandatory for Jet Ski operation, regardless of your age. The course materials have been written to be on a 7th grade reading level. Upon completing the test at the end of the three session course, you will receive your NASBLA
approved Laminated United States Power Squadrons America’s Boating Course Certificate, which is recognized nationally and never expires. Registration for the course is required in advance of the course and subject to availabilities. The cost of each of the two courses of your choice is $60. per student – payable in advance through the registration on our site. For more than 100 years, America’s Boating Club, has been leading the way on the importance of boater safety through education and as any one of our members will tell you, “an educated boater is a better, safer boater.”
Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park) recently introduced a resolution on the floor of the Assembly honoring an extraordinary organization, P.S. I Love You Day Inc., and its founders, Jaimie and Brooke DiPalma, by recognizing February 11, 2022 as P.S. I Love You Day in New York State. On this day P.S I Love You Day asks everyone to stand up against bullying, help end depression, and ultimately prevent suicide. On April 23, 2010, then 14-year-old Brooke was dropped off at school by her dad, Joseph DiPalma. On her way out of the car, he said, “I Love You” and she said, “I Love You” back. Little did Brooke know, later that day, she would be
taken out of school and told that her dad tragically died by suicide. Joseph DiPalma was an active member in the community; a former NYPD officer, ex-Chief of the West Islip Fire Department, and President of his Local Chamber of Commerce. P.S. I Love You Day was started in 2010 by sisters Jaimie and Brooke DiPalma, along with their family and the West Islip High School Class of 2014, to celebrate the memory of their father and others lost to suicide. They used the last three words their father said, “I Love You”, as the inspiration for this significant day. Part of their mission is to educate students early about mental health in order to remove the stigma and let
them know it is okay to ask for help. This year P.S. I Love You Day celebrated its 12th Anniversary on Friday, February 11, 2022, in an effort to bring awareness to the importance of mental health and suicide prevention, to stand up to bullying, and to spread kindness. “I commend Jaimie and Brooke DiPalma, and P.S. I Love You Day, for their hard work and dedication advocating on the importance of mental health and encouraging those struggling to ask for help,” said Durso. “It is imperative that more work must be done on the local, State and National levels to offer resources, treatment and prevent another life lost to suicide.”

Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA’s original orphanage, the Temporary Home for Children, was founded in 1884. Louisa Lee Schuyler, great-granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, spearheaded the establishment of the orphanage. During this upcoming Women’s History Month, Family & Children’s Association will be honoring Louisa Lee Schuyler’s vision by joining forces with some of the most influential female philanthropists and business owners across Long Island with its inaugural Long Island Women in Philanthropy Breakfast & Fashion Show. A failure to clean equipment was the leading cause of home heating equipment fires. Fires in which a heat source was too close to combustible materials caused the largest shares of civilian deaths, injuries, and direct property damage. Half of home heating fire deaths were caused by placing equipment too close to things that can burn. NFPA offers these tips and guidelines for safely heating your home during the winter months: Heating equipment and chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet (one meter) away from all heating equipment, including furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters. Always use the right kind of fuel, as specified by the manufacturer, for fuelburning space heaters. Create a three-foot (one meter) “kid-free zone” around open fires and space
heaters. Make sure space heaters are in good working order and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. Fireplaces should have a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container, which should be placed outside at least 10 feet away from your home. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. If you smell gas in your gas heater, do not light the appliance. Leave the home immediately and call your local fire department or gas company. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are located throughout the home; test them monthly to ensure that they’re working properly. NFPA offers a wealth of home heating safety tips, information, and resources to help better educate the public about ways to safely heat their homes. In addition, NFPA’s “Put a Freeze on Winter Fires” campaign with the U.S. Fire Administration works to promote a host of winter safety issues, including home heating.

Flu season is officially here in New York, with the New York State Department of Health reporting ten consecutive weeks of widespread flu diagnoses. To help prevent the flu in people who are at high risk for severe complications, the American Lung Association and Empire BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, released a toolkit specifically for caregivers of adults 65 and over through their “Fend Off Flu” campaign. Influenza (flu) is a serious and highly contagious disease that can have severe health consequences for all, and especially for vulnerable adults 65 and older, and those with chronic health conditions. The new toolkit is a resource to educate caregivers including healthcare providers and personnel in long-term care settings about the flu and the importance of vaccination to protect adults 65 and older. “Nationally, 50-70% of flu hospitalizations were in patients over 65. Flu shots are especially important for healthcare workers and
caregivers of vulnerable adults,” said David Ackman, M.D., Medicaid Medical Director from Empire BlueCross BlueShield. “Not only will getting a flu shot help reduce the chance of catching the illness, but it will also help reduce the severity if it’s contracted. Especially for people with underlying health conditions, the flu can turn into a serious, even deadly, illness.” During the 2019 – 2020 flu season, it is estimated the flu sent approximately 380,000 people to the hospital with related complications and caused an estimated 20,000 deaths in the United States, which is why getting vaccinated should be a priority. The flu vaccine is the best protection against contracting and spreading the illness. “Especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, routine vaccination is more important than ever,” said Erica Masin, executive director for the American Lung Association in metro
New York. “Flu vaccinations have been in use for more than 50 years, with hundreds of millions of Americans safely receiving them. It’s recommended that everyone over six months of age receive a flu vaccine, but they are especially important for the 3,026,000 people in New York with lung disease, as well as their family members and caregivers.” In addition to vaccination, the CDC recommends these everyday preventive actions. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or your elbow. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. The “Caregiver Flu Toolkit” is a comprehensive guide to educate caregivers of adults 65 and over about flu and the importance of vaccination to help protect them from contracting the flu. Physical activity is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression. Feed your soul, rock your recipes: The meaning of “family” may have changed, but family meals still make an impact.
Regular meals at home with family can help reduce stress, boost selfesteem and make the whole family feel connected. Stay on beat with your blood pressure: High blood pressure is a leading cause and controllable risk factor for heart disease and stroke and can contribute to worse outcomes for people who contract COVID-19. Close to half of American adults have high blood pressure. Of those, about 75% don’t have it controlled and many don’t even know they have it. The best way to know your blood pressure numbers is to have it measured at least once per year by a health care professional. If your blood pressure is normal and you are at least 20 years of age, regularly monitor it at home with a validated monitor and discuss the numbers with a doctor. Keep the Beat! Learn Hands-Only CPR: Each year, more than 350,000 EMS-assessed out-ofhospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States and about 70% of out-ofhospital cardiac arrests happen in homes. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Help your community reclaim their rhythm by learning the two simple steps of Hands-Only CPR: Call 911, then press hard and fast in the center of the chest.
