GAMING SPEAKER - The Bay Shore High School Esports Club recently had the opportunity to listen to a guest speaker. Michael Barry, a Long Island native, has a varied musical background, including his work on music for Beauty and the Beast with John Williams on music for Star Wars. He spoke to the scholars about his work composing music for Riot Games, including the popular game League of Legends.

Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

Bellina’s Pizza & Restaurant, located at 22 East Main Street in East Islip, was recently welcomed to the community on November 1st of last year. Owned and operated by co-owners Haki Mucaji and his brother-in-law Mati Shatri, this establishment was immediately seen as a

great addition to the other Main Street businesses. Along with serving delicious pizza, pasta, heroes and other specialties, Bellina’s has a policy of serving those in need in the surrounding neighborhood. A sign at the front door notes that anyone who is hungry and unable to pay will be fed for free. As Mucaji, a native of the former Yugoslavia, reminisced, “My father always said - do good and it will come back to you.” Mucaji says he brought this policy over from a former business in Bay

Shore, La Casa Pizza, where he used to work. “When I came here,” he explained, “we put the sign out. I told my employees to treat them just like paying customers.” Partner Shatri agrees, “We’re doing small things with a great heart.” The response from the community has been extremely welcoming. St John the Baptist Diocesan High School’s (SJB) Dance Company performed at the Performing Arts Educators 12th annual Invitational at Carnegie Hall. On Saturday, February 3rd, Bay Shore Schools Superintendent Joseph Bond announced that when work is completed on the new wrestling facility at Bay Shore High School, it will be renamed the Jumper Leggio Auxiliary Gymnasium. Jumper Leggio (BSHS ‘53) was born and raised in Bay Shore. During his years at Bay Shore High School, he was one of the best wrestlers on Long Island. After serving in the United States Navy, Jumper returned to Bay Shore and founded the Kid Wrestling program in 1961 with his friend, Bill Knapp. Now in his 80s, Jumper can still be found on the mats, coaching both Kid Wrestling and working with the Bay Shore Varsity Wrestling team. Superintendent Bond was joined by Suffolk County Legislators Tom Cilmi and Steve Flotteron, Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Town of Islip Councilman John Cochrane and Dennis Bennett from the Office of Senator Phil Boyle, in recognizing Jumper Leggio and the Bay Shore Kid Wrestling Program.
